Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery 3/9/16

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some of them live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 3/9/16:
Returning Favorites
Head Lopper #3– I love the over-size quarterly format of the book. Andrew Maclean has me hooked.
Descender #11– Can’t say enough about how good this little kid robot and epic sci-fi story is.
Harrow County #11– Love this witch book. Fills in the gap left by Wytches. Also optioned for a deal a while back.
Hangman #3– Great new noir series by Archie.
What, Seriously?
Disney Princess #1– I don’t like spec-ing on kids books but Frozen did well out of the gate and these Joe Books have small direct market print runs. Worth keeping an eye on.
The Rare Marvel on the List
Haunted Mansion #1– Speaking of Disney, Haunted Mansion is one of my favorite rides at Disney. Also, Joshua Williamson written. Loved it as a kid and loved it just as much taking my kids on it. I am hunting the action figure covers.
The “Because I am a sucker”
Detective Comics #50 Polybag variants– Yeah, I am in for the hunt again. Hoping the books will be in better condition than the Harley Black Bag books.
Small Press Gems
Elasticator #1– Scout Comics new book. Looks very interesting, and I do still love superhero stories that are not from the big two. t’s the debut issue of the next great modern superhero! In this neo-crime epic, we follow The Elasticator (aka Mikey Mazzagatti) as he tells us his story of life in Brooklyn during the height of the recession. With a city on its knees and organized crime working alongside the government, Mikey must push past his own troubles towards a greater good. Mixing equal parts humor and grit, Mikey goes from outcast to a neighborhood icon. Mikey pulls no punches as he tells a story of regret, hardship, and second chances.
Small Press Pick of the Week
Mulp #1– Hellboy meets Mouse Guard. Fans of Blacksad and Mouse Guard should be all over this one. MULP is an anthropomorphic comic book, a pulp adventure set in a world of mice. Sceptre of the Sun follows the exploits of Jack Redpath and Vicky Jones as they attempt to unravel a mystery surrounding an ancient stone tablet unearthed during an archaeological excavation in Egypt.
The Pick of the Week
Samurai #1 (Titan)– Sold out just about everywhere. I had the pleasure of reading the book a few weeks ago thanks to the preview pdf’s that Titan sends me. It is a great read and a must for fans of Lone Wolf and Cub, Seven Samurai, Seven Samurai, or just about anything Kurasawa.
For the Book Shelf
Tokyo Ghost Vol. 1– Rick Remender’s awesome techno-punk/crime/samurai (always evolving) book. We love it and it is worth the look. At $9.99 it is worth the pick up.

  1. I jumped on that Disney Princess book when pre-ordering from DCBS; so I’m disappointed it’s not sold out at Midtown yet, lol. I was definitely remembering the Frozen sell-out, and hoping for more of the same, with characters from several franchises included in this one. Fingers crossed.

    1. That Frozen was sort of a flop as well, at least for flipping. You had to have it in hand or know you’d have it before that Wednesday. I listed mine the same day as it came out, no go on any type of sale.

  2. Although Samurai 1 is picked by other websites too, Dark Horse version has shown zero price increase since 2004. Deja vu?

  3. Sorry about error. Actually, Samurai Legend (by Marvel) with zero price increase since 2008.
