Alana's Weekend Spec Civil War and Dr. Strange edition

Hey fellow CHU’ers back with a few more specs for your back issue bin searching this weekend. With Civil War’s U.S. release yesterday figured it’s a good time to go over not just key books for Civil War but also a few for upcoming Black Panther and Dr. Strange flicks. As most Civil War key books have been spec’d for months and prices are high a couple have slipped through and are still worth a buy. I’ll try and do this as spoiler free as possible, so let’s jump in.
Well the big books for this movie have to be Fantastic Four #52, 1st Black Panther. No big surprise as this book has been sought after for a long time, the other big book which has became pricey the last few months due to toy ads spoiling it Tales to Astonish #49, 1st Giantman. This was a great spec 6 months or so ago. Now it’s up there in price, and because of its age it will only keep moving up especially if they continue to use Giantman in future movies. With these two books prices so high I’ve a couple cheap specs that fit in line with Black Panther and Giantman.
Black Panther #2 (2005), Black Panther #1, #5 2009, these feature the 1st Shuri, 1st Cover Shuri, 1st Shuri as Black Panther. Pretty sure that’s Shuri in the scene with T’Challa and T’Chaka in Civil War. No one has really said anything about Shuri appearing in Civil War yet, so it could just be a wrong guess on my part. The actress in question Florence Kasumba is credited in the movie as Security Chief and could just as well be a Dora Milaje (Like an Amazonian woman security force of Wakanda) also the character doesn’t act or dress like royalty but with T’Challa’s comment of wanting to see “them” Black Widow and this mystery character fight I think there’s a little more to the “Security Chiefs” role then just being a random bodyguard.

With little clues from Civil War to go on for what the film Black Panther will be about other then one of the end credit scenes, I think this is Shuri and an overlooked cameo clue in Civil War. Good price point on these books, I was able to pick up Black Panther #2 (2005) for under $10 and Black Panther 2009 #1-12 for $20 with the JSC cover for #1 as there’s a couple covers and a 2nd print.
Other books to look for, Avengers #32 1966, Powerman #24 1975. 1st Bill Foster, 1st Bill Foster as Black Goliath. This Spec has little to do with Civil War film other then Giantman appearing in the movie, but is a strong spec due to where Foster can fit in. We could see Bill Foster in the next Antman movie working at Pym labs, he helps Giantman get unstuck being Giant in the comics. We could see Black Goliath in the coming Luke Cage series or even Daredevil or Defenders, did I mention his ex-wife is Claire Temple the nurse from Daredevil and Jessica Jones tv show. If those shows don’t pan out he could even appear on Agents of Shield or the Inhumans movie (if it ever gets made) I think in his latest repackaging he’s considered an Inhuman now. Avengers #32 and Powerman #24 have attractive spec prices as can be found around $10-$20 in a VG-NM range.

As for the rest of the movie Civil War keys I won’t spend too much time on but are with a mention and I probably will leave a few out so fill free to add to the list in the comments section.
Avengers #11 1st Spidey in Avengers book
Avengers #316 Spider-Man joins Avengers.
Avengers #223 1st Antman/Hawkeye trick shot. I’m not big on small event keys like this but has been doing well from $1 book to going around $20 not bad.
Avengers #2 1st Giantman in Avengers
Tales of Suspense #58 Iconic cover of Cap vs Ironman
Captain America #168 1st Helmut Zemo
Captain America #359, #360 1st Crossbones
Jungle Action #5 1st solo Black Panther. Gaining steam
Black Panther #1 first series Gaining steam as well.
Civil War #1 first series.
Amazing Spider-Man #529 1st Iron Spidey not that this is the suit that Tony gives Spidey in the movie but this issue is still going strong.
Also the first appearance of the spider light have no clue what issue it is, I’m sure someone knows it but again another small event key.
Looking forward in the MCU movie line up we have Dr. Strange coming in November with no real ties to the Civil War movie. I could tell you to buy Strange Tales #110, #115, #126, Doctor Strange #169, Dr. Strange #1 but those are givens as they are Doctor Strange’s biggest Key books anyways. I could speculate on who the villain is and list another 5 books but I rather leave you with one spec of long forgotten info. So I want to go back to about a year ago when Dr. Strange film creator Scott Derrickson sent out a tweet. Most probably never even heard this or saw this as it was long ago and before any major news or casting of the movie. Basically Scott’s baiting us that Death makes an appearance in the Dr. Strange film. This could fit in well when it comes to bringing Dr. Strange and Captain Marvel into the coming Infinity movies as well as giving Thanos a cameo in Dr Strange as well. Deaths 1st appearance is Captain Marvel #26 which is also Thanos 1st cover and if Death does appear in Dr. Strange this book has some room to grow being a first appearance of Death and first cover of Thanos. Can be found in the $10-$100 range. Also to note the picture tweeted by Scott is the cover of Doctor Strange #4 in which Strange does meet the character Death. Can be found in the $5-$20 range.
