One Year Later: Picks of the Week for 5/4/16

Thanks again to Shawn B. the One Year Later Investigator
What up CHUms!?! Back again with another One Year Later round up. Big week on potentially hot comics. Great to see after last week’s mediocre releases. All the guys did a pretty decent job on their specs. Which I appreciate not only because I bought most of them but also because I hate giving bad news. Out of 21 Specs only 1 went down in value, with 10 winners and 10 holding at the same value.
Let’s do it!

Winners

Amazing Spider-Man #12 Age of Apocalypse Variant – Mel Pick-
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $8
 Love the color scheme here.

Vikings #1 – Poyo Pick
- Original Value: $4 Current Value: $5-6 on eBay. Still Regular A Covers for sale at Midtown.
Variants are sold out and going for a little more in the aftermarket. Blank Sketch covers are getting $20-25 each. I freaking love this show! SPOILER ALERT: Even though I know he is dead….I keep waiting for Ragnar to pop up somewhere.

Renato Jones One Percent #1 – Anthony Pick
- Original Value: $4 Current Value: $5-6
Image of course. Season 2 out next week. (These were up to $10 at one point)

Walking Dead #154 – Anthony & Poyo Pick-
Original Value: $3 Current Value: $8
First appearance of Beta! Can’t go wrong with TWD.

Moon Knight #2 – Anthony Pick –
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $8
Just a hot series! Looking forward to the show.

Punisher #1 Incentive Alex Maleev Variant Cover – Mel & Poyo Pick-
Original Value: $20 Current Value: $39
TA-DOW! Glad I got one! This one says to me…… Just resting my eyes and tossing around my bullets after a long hard day of punishing!

Moon Knight #2 Incentive Tedesco Variant – Mel Pick –
Original Value: $15 Current Value: $19
Still holding up well a year later. The fact that it’s a popular series helps.

Gwenpool #0 Incentive Chris Bachalo Variant – Mel Pick –
Original Value: $30 Current Value: $36
Not many recent sales on this one nor are there many going for sale. Collector’s must be holding onto these right now. Some high asking prices. I was unable to get this one.

Black Widow #3 Incentive Joelle Jones Variant – Mel & Poyo Pick
 – Original Value: $15 Current Value: $23
Cool cover! Sold out at on line retailers.

Spider-Gwen #8 Age of Apocalypse Variant – Mel Pick
- Original Value: $4 Current Value: $5-6 on eBay but shockingly there are still copies available at Midtown.
Cool artwork that should continue to heat up. Spider-Gwen is pretty popular and will probably heat up all around real soon.
Still Possibles

Howard The Duck #7 Age of Apocalypse Variant– Mel Pick
 – Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at Midtown
Personally this one doesn’t do it for me but who knows!

Punisher #1 Age of Apocalypse Variant – Mel Pick
- Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at Midtown
Got one! Glad I did. I feel more bad ass just looking at it.

Thunderbolts #1 Age of Apocalypse Variant – Mel Pick
 – Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at Midtown

Smosh #1 – Anthony Pick -
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4
Still available at Midtown, including copies of Jerry Gaylord May The Fourth Variants.
This one was hot for a while right after release. Quick flip was the way to go here but still potential.

Punisher #1 – Anthony Pick -
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4
This is still one to hang onto for a while in my humble opinion.

Gwenpool #0 – Anthony Pick –
Original Value: $5 Current Value: $5
While sales are closer to original value there are quite a few copies selling on eBay and at retailers for up to $10.

Michael Turner Art Edition Soulfire #1 – Anthony Pick –
Original Value: $6 Current Value: $6 Still available at Midtown.

Spider-Gwen #8 – Anthony Pick –
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at Midtown.

Detective Comics #52 Manapul Homage Variant – Poyo Pick
 – Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at Midtown.

4001 AD #1 – Poyo Pick
 – Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Besides the Blank Sketch Variant all other issues are still available at on-line retailers.
Misses

Punisher #1 Incentive Phil Noto Black Panther 50th Anniversary Cover – Mel Pick
-Original Value: $20 Current Value: $12
Un-specced Winners:

Batman/Superman #32 Original Value: $4 Current Value: $7
Thought to be first appearance of Kenan Kong. Not really the case but still has value.

Daredevil/Punisher #1
Original Value: $5 Current Value: Few recent sales have gone for up to $10.
With the Netflix series I think this is one to hang onto or get now.

Invincible Iron Man #9 Age of Apocalypse Variant
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $10
Riri Williams first full appearance.

      1. Yeah, hold until Beta makes it to the show.. then sell. $3 book turns into a $15 to $20 potentially is a nice profit margin. $60 worth of books turn into possibly $450.. I’ll take that any day of the week.

    1. It’s tough because there are som flat out bad weeks that you try to pick the cream of the crop out of. We had weeks like that this year in February and March

      1. The AOA variants show this current bad trend at Marvel, releasing monthly variants like AOA, Howard the duck, venomized, woman of power, Mary Jane, what’s next month after that Marvel Comic card variants, Then the insane run of Hip hop covers for years, etc…… for the most part 99/100 of them do nothing. I do think the Marvel comic card variants will bring attention to the first set of Marvel cards they come from, my husband has the whole set he collected as a kid.

  1. I’ve got about 10 bat sups 32 and 10 twd
Should have sold off a few 32s to break even

  2. Whoever that was in Batman / Superman #32 he is going to be appearing in upcoming issues of New Superman.

  3. I agree on the theme variants, it’s hit or miss on most of them. The ones that do well are artist based as is usual with any other variant. A Joelle Jones, a Crain, a Del Otto would do well themed or not. The rest all seem forced to fit the theme.
I’m no hip hop fan either, so none of those covers ever resonate with me. Now if they did classic rock album cover homages, I might have some interest now and again. For example, the Dr. Who Beatles Red/Blue variants awhile back were nice.

  4. I really appreciate these looks back. We can get so focused on the current week that we never stop to see how these books performed. Checking history can only help our spec picks in the future. Of the 24 books, I picked up 15 of them. Most were to read/for my PC. I did sell a Black Widow and made a profit on it. Luckily, I didn’t invest too heavily on any of those books except the 5 or 6 copies I still have of Batman/Superman. And I still believe in Iron Man #9. I think it’ll hold it’s value.
Keep up the good work on these!

  5. Several of these books are in my PC for various reasons. Spider-Gwen and Spider-man AoA for their covers. The homage on Spider-gwen #8 is kind of cool too. The Walking Dead for it’s story and the Iron Man book for Riri’s 1st full appearance. The only thing different in my PC is that I collect the IM #9 with Riri’s 1st cover appearance.
I like the Gwenpool in the pool cover but like the original better. Never read Vikings but love the show. That cover captures Ragnar very well imo.

  6. i had great spec with several of the vikings cover shown, hope this is a regular slot, i love looking back !
