Poyo's Picks of the Week for May 31, 2017

I hope everyone’s Memorial Day was a blast, I know mine was as I once again survived another tandem skydive. I really am thinking about changing careers (or hobby perhaps) since one of the skydivers put it this way, you’ll love your job but be poor as hell. It was a blast though. Total stress reliever, I recommend jumping out of planes to any and everyone.
Back to comics and enough about what I do in my spare time.. So, last week wasn’t too exciting, at least on the spec side of things. Lots of reader books, ongoing title reads that is. The only winner I think was the Seven to Eternity Spawn covers which were kind of scarce in my neck of the woods, one shop didn’t even order any. But this was one that was already selling way above cover in pre-sales on the secondary market.
So that brings us to this week, the 5th week of the month, the slower week for most publishers. Looks like a lot more reader books but there might be a few surprises in there. Image is releasing a new #1, so there’s always a chance those heat up. If ongoing though, could be a slow heat, which is not a bad thing, sometimes even better than the quick flips.
Secret Empire #3 hits stands too. Hopefully we learn more about this mysterious and lost Steve Rogers that has appeared literally out of no where.
Now, on with the picks.
DC/Vertigo Pick
There are literally only 4 titles hitting the stands this week, 3 are annuals or special books. So the pick goes to Flash #23 which has been a great read and still one of the few DC titles I’ve been keeping up with.
Marvel Pick
Secret Empire #3 (Marvel) – This will likely be a pick every time. Why? Cause we’ve been told there should be a twist or surprise at the end of every issue. This week we hopefully learn more about the new Steve Rogers. We’ll also learn more about what’s going on with Captain Marvel who’s locked out of Earth. So don’t ignore these. Everyone watches Marvel Studio movies, this is the crap that affects those movies in some way or another.
Let’s not also forget Cable #1 hits stands again. Probably nothing spec worthy but with Cable coming to the big screens soon enough in one of those Marvel movies, definitely worth checking out. You can still find his 1st appearance for relatively cheap, raw that is. Cable #1 Vol. 1 you can still find in the dollar bins, since there was literally a billion of them.
Small Publisher Pick
Paklis #1 (Image) – A new writer/artist book by Dustin Weaver. Carries the $5.99 price tag, so I’m expecting a smaller print run on these. Grab one to read, grab another to hold. It might just pay off if the book catches heat now or down the road.
Another worthy mention is Saga #43, which is only 25 cents this week. Look out for the incentive covers, could be easy flips if you find them for cheap or cover price. Honestly I love Staples artwork but I hate that cover art. I don’t think it brings out Staples best work..
Indie Pick
Motor Girl #6 (Abstract Studios) – I can’t stress this enough, pick this up, read this series. It’s that good. It’s clever, it’s genius and you’ll only expect quality comic book writing and art until it ends.
A humble mention also goes to Namwolf #2 (Albatross Exploding). Be on the lookout for the Mike Mignola variant for this one.
That’s all I got people.. enjoy it, hate it. It is what it is and a year from now Shawn B. will be telling me I was a loser with these picks more than likely..

  1. I have a red headed step child LCS that is a few towns over, that I don’t frequent every week. It is a nice store and I do have a small sub box with them. I usually pre order my indie books from this store. I called them today to see what was in my pull box and I was told my Namwolf #1 Powell variant finally came in. Can’t wait to read the first two issues.

  2. I jumped out of a plane about 15 years ago. I went static line though, not tandem. When I stuck my feet out of that moving plane, the biggest rush of mixed emotions Ive ever had. I also dated a chick who went skydiving in New Zealand, from 14000 feet. She free fell for 1 minute. I’ve also bungee’d. It is quite the rush as well.

    1. I probably won’t bungee ever.. from what I’ve read, it’s more dangerous. More accidents have happened with that over skydiving.
Free falling for a minute sounds awesome.

      1. I bungeed when I was younger. It was off a crane that was over a river. It was 150 ft. And I did dunked my head at the bottom. The rush you get as your plummeting towards the ground/water is incredible and super unnatural. You’re thinking to yourself as that ground rush comes at you ‘I shouldn’t be going this fast towards the ground, I should slow down’, but of course there are no brakes. Just the end of the line. I probably wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t over water (or drunk and stoned).

    1. My view has always been: It is hard enough to get me on a plane, it is going to be even harder to get me on a plane and then have me jump out midway.

      1. We were supposed to for my wife’s 30th birthday but then somehow she ended up pregnant so we didn’t do it. That was 5 years ago now and we haven’t seriously talked about doing it again. I don’t like flying….but I don’t hate it either. For some reason lift offs make me nervous but then I’m fine after that.

          1. There was one flight I was on coming back from Vegas. That plane was jumping up and down. It’s the worst I’ve ever experienced. I figured if the plane stayed in the air during that flight that I’m probably pretty safe going forward.

            1. My worst was last year when we went to Disney. And hour and a half of terror up and back. This year we had awesome flights too and from Disney. You never know.

              1. No…You don’t. The kids have been begging to go to Disney. My oldest really wants to go to Universal to see the Harry Potter stuff. I think we’re going to try and do that next year. Disney costs an arm and a leg though. I priced it this year and shut it down. We took my 13 year old when she was 4 for the one and only time it we’ve been there.

                1. We go every year/every other year to Disney. We time it with cheap flights and free meal plans. We normally pay around $3k. It is where a chunk of my comic flipping money goes.

                2. I priced this year and had it around 5-8K depending on where we stayed etc. there’s 5 of us and getting on a plane is $1500-2000 alone depending on flight prices at the time. Do you stay on property or off?

                3. We stay on. This year we stayed at Disney Pop resort. We paid $99 for flights on south west so round trip it was just under $800 to fly.

                4. That’s not bad. Air has got significantly higher. We’re flying to Florida this year and it was $1,400 for the 5 of us from Missouri. That was quite a bit cheaper than last year when we opted to drive because air was 2K for us.

                5. ha, it’s about the same for us. We’ve made the drive to Disney once and Fort Meyer’s (we know someone with a house in the area) a few times. It’s not fun.

      2. I’d rather be on a plane with a parachute than on a plane without one. 🙂
