Poyo's Picks of the Week for June 7th, 2017

Another glorious week for comics, wait.. that’s every week, even the slow weeks. Nothing stops us from heading to the comic book store to spend our hard earned cash on books we intend to sell but end up loving. They become our precious and we turn into grumps and creatures of the caves when our significant others tell us we need to get rid of them.
Let’s get on with the precious picks for the week..
DC/Vertigo
DC Looney Tunes 100 Page Super Spectacular #1 (DC) – Yes, this is my DC pick of the week. It won’t be valuable, it won’t heat up. Yes it’s gonna cost you $7.99 but if you loved Looney Tunes growing up, this is for you. This is going down as my bathroom read for the week for that necessary quiet time away from the world while you do your business and enjoying some fond memories of Saturday morning cartoons from the 80s.
Marvel Pick
Darth Vader #1 (Marvel) – Yes there will be plenty of copies. Yes it will be easy to find. Yes, all the variants will be half the price they were a week or two later but this is Darth Vader with Charles Soule writing. If you love Star Wars and you love Darth Vader, then this is a must pick up read. This picks up right where Episode III left off so we get to learn what type of shenanigans Darth Boy gets into after he learns he’s lost everything he loved and falls further into the Dark Side!
Small Publisher Pick
Walking Dead #168 (Image) – A no brain pick. It’s a pick everytime. As long as the show is on and attracting viewers, there’s a likely chance the books heat up when they reach that part of the story line, new character is introduced, etc.
And speaking of Saturday morning cartoon delights.. a honorable mention to Mighty Mouse #1 hitting stands from Dynamite. Yes, don’t expect this to catch any heat but I loved Mighty Mouse so this is one of those other pickup bathroom read books.. ๐Ÿ™‚
Indie Pick
I was gonna pick Babyteeth #1 (AfterShock) from the hot rising star Donny Cates but it’s not my top Indie Pick this week. Like Anthony, I’ve read both #1 and #2 and cannot wait until #3 but with the amount of variants this one has now, it’s destroying all potential heat. If this one does heat up though, stick with the regular covers A and B, the Brown and Torque covers, those will be the clear winners. But by all means, do not pass this one up. I’m just saying don’t load up on copies. What I thought would be a potential great flip might not be as great for spec purposes. The story is awesome, the art is good, so it’s still a winner. Let’s just hope I’m wrong on the heating up part, cause we all know we can use extra cash to buy more books. Okay, I talked about it enough to warrant it’s my second Indie pick.. after my first one, below..
My actual pick this week goes to Pestilence #2 (AfterShock Comics). A great new series, great read, great art. Expect #2 to have that smaller print run as #1 still seems to sell above cover. As more issues hit stands, attracting more readers, we might see a slow rise in the value of #1 as these new readers are seeking out the early issues.
I’m gonna also throw out some love for Redline #4 from Oni press. The new issue hits stands this week and honestly, this book surprised me. If you like Sci Fi mixed with detective type books, this is for you. I’ve been really enjoying this book. I think it’s underrated, deserves a little more praise. I could totally see this being a great show down the road. So if you passed it up previously, check it out.
That’s all I got this week. Hate the picks, love them.. it doesn’t hurt my feelings cause Shawn B. will be back in a year to tell me how wrong I was anyways. ๐Ÿ˜‰
