By Shawn B. The One Year Later Investigator
What up CHUper Heroes!?! Shawn B. back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
Slow week in general. Most of the guys picks were geared towards good reads and art rather than flipping for profit.
Winners
Sun Bakery #2 James Harvey Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $10 Current Value: $15 Copies for sale at $20 and up still
The Pope #1 Variant is also holding strong still. The Image regular covers seem to be doing better than the original small press regular covers.
Batman #1 Rebirth – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $3 Current Value: $8
Actually heated up pretty quickly and held value. Midtown has copies listed at $10 but at 75% off.
Near Misses
Star Wars: Han Solo #1 – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Still available at Midtown.
In my opinion this is one to put on the shelf for a few years.
Superman #1 – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $3 Current Value: Still around $3-4.
The B Cover is going for a few bucks over cover price. This is no doubt one to hang onto for a while. Midtown and MyComicShop.com are selling their copies for $8-10. Another year and I bet it would make it to the Winners bracket.
Tales From the Darkside #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Still available at Midtown.
Anthony did call this a slow burn. We know how he loves his horror.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #59 – Anthony Pick as a Quick Flip
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4
Hyped up supposed death of Splinter. Quick flippers could have done really well on this one.
Civil War II X-Men #1 Phil Noto Character Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $7 Current Value: Still available at Midtown
I like this cover. The eyes.
Patsy Walker A.K.A. Hellcat #7 Tedesco Classic Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Still available at Midtown
I jumped on this one.
Misses
Civil War II #2 Phil Noto Character Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $7 Current Value: $3
Most of these Phil Noto Variants never really caught on unfortunately. Though I am pretty sure you could have flipped them early and made a couple bucks.
Unspecced Winners
Scooby Apocalypse #2
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $10
Who would have thought that this one would be a $10 bill?

Great tip on that Patsy Walker..i love this cover still..grest job as always
Thanks Mel! Yeah there is something about that cover for me too.
Love the 1 year later articles. Thanks.
Thanks for reading.
Have to say that I bought a stack of those TMNT books the day they came so I would be considered a quick flipper on this book didn’t move a single one. That Sun Bakery cover reminds me of Lobos back #2 but reveresed.
I sold every TMNT I had. I was happy.
I sold the 3 I grabbed too for 10$ a piece
Mine were listed at $7 never sold maybe had 2 watchers the three times they were listed
The ultimate winner from a year ago this week that dropped like a stone in the last 11 months is the Justice League Of America #51 error
Oh man. I made so much money off that book. Was selling the 10 copies I got for $80 each. Kept one for myself.
TMNT#59 was way over-ordered. After the “death” of Donatello situation, when retailers got wind of the possibility Splinter would “die”, and that the death may actually stick since the last was somewhat of a fake-out… they bought extra. I know several sellers online have tons of copies, and one seller in particular is selling stacks of copies in sets for practically $1 per copy when you divide it out. To this day, I still don’t own a 1st Print of #44 since speccers arrived at my local comic shop before I did and bought them all. Now I’ve added TMNT to my advance order from DCBS, when it was previously something I’d buy locally.
