Preacher officially announced for AMC

We posted a blurb about the Seth Rogen produced Preacher coming to AMC, home of The Walking Dead, earlier. Here is the rest of the story, as well as a list of the key issues is the series.

Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s Vertigo comic book series “Preacher” is officially on its way to the small screen! AMC and Sony TV have today officially confirmed the news that broke last fall that sees This is the End co-writers and directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg executive producing the series. They will also provide the screenplay for the pilot.
“This is a great piece of material for AMC, and we’re thrilled to begin working with the creative team behind it to make another iconic AMC series,” said Joel Stillerman, AMC’s EVP of original programming, production and digital content.
“This is amazing!” say Rogen and Goldberg. “We’ve tried for seven years to work on ‘Preacher’ and we’re so psyched AMC is finally letting us. It is our favorite comic of all time, and we’re going to do everything we can to do it right. Humperdoo!”
Garth Ennis said, “Steve Dillon and I are very happy to see ‘Preacher’ being developed for TV, which seems a much more natural home for the story than a 2-hour movie. Between them, Sony TV and AMC have brought viewers two of my favorite shows with ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Mad Men,’ and it’s exactly that kind of creative commitment and courage that ‘Preacher’ needs.

Key Issues: (some are priced out of some collectors range now)
Absolute Vertigo
Preacher 1 First Jesse Custard, Cassidy, Tullip
Preacher Preview
Preacher 2 Saint of Killers
Preacher 13 First Hunters and Herr Starr
Let me know if I missed anything.

  1. This is a re-post; I felt that it is relevant ‘Preacher’ material, and depicts exactly how this CHU website can lead you to some serious Gold Nuggets BEFORE the rest of the comics community gets their grubby claws in the proverbial ‘spek’ honey-pot!: EXCELLENT JOB CHU!!!!!!!!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Woo-Hoo!!!!!!!
    Excellent news guys!
    Upon the original TV SHOW news from CHU a few weeks ago, the only preacher comic I had was a single VF+ copy of Preacher #1 that I picked-up in the 90’s for something like $26.
    I felt very, very strongly about the positive nature of this news, and I went straight out and combed through 100′s of EBAY auctions (US & UK), and numerous online shops (again, US & UK), and I have been able to compile a complete set of VF+ Preacher comics 1-66!
    I was on the lookout for auctions with multiple books with free or cheap s/h.
    Issues #2-10 were obviously the most expensive to obtain, but I won an auction in the UK for issues 2-10 for 27 GBP (~ $42). The rest of the books were acquired for cover, and some for less than cover (based on the bundle amount). Example: I got VF+ issues 14-21 for $6.99; 27 random issues for $25, and numerous books from the same shop for hella reduced prices & combined s/h…
    Also, the following EBAY auction was my inspiration for getting the complete Preacher run (1-66) in VF+ condition: (check out the date of this auction…how much will a full set be going for in a few days, when the news of the TV Show spreads???):
    I am absolutely thrilled to hear this latest news regarding the Preacher show, and I will start looking at the Preacher books as they surely begin to rise in value based on this latest TV news!
    Like Flipper said: THAT DIDN’T TAKE LONG! So, I’m UBBER happy I went straight out and got a complete set as soon as CHU hyped this book!
    Gold Dust again Boys!
    Thanks!
  2. Yea, Flipper, you missed listing one of my favorite little-known Gold Nugget Pre-#1 Preacher books. I snagged a couple of these babies as well after CHU broke the news. I’ll have to check, but I think I paid $12 each…I’ll check, I don’t want to lie to the community!
    Anyway, I think the following pre-#1 Preacher comic (?) is the SCARCEST of them all. Ok, naw, the Preacher Preview is probably the scarcest…anyway Flipper, you forgot to mention:
    Preacher #1 Preview, DC Direct Currents #85, containing the first preview of Preacher #1! Obviously, there’s a few books out there that are claiming to be the first Preacher preview book…the multitude of Peter Panzerfaust previews come to mind!
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Preacher-1-Preview-DC-Direct-Currents-85-AMC-TV-Show-coming-NM-Condition/261380425486?_trksid=p2045573.c100034.m2102&_trkparms=aid%3D555012%26algo%3DPW.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20492%26meid%3D4666808898344772827%26pid%3D100034%26prg%3D9149%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D8%26sd%3D161216799632
    Anyway, I haven’t been able to nail down true production dates for all of the pre-#1 Preacher Preview books, but this baby is pretty rare!
    … AND WHAT IF IT (DC #85) TURNS OUT TO HAVE BEEN PRODUCED BEFORE THE PREACHER PREVIEW????????
    HMMMMMMMMM, interesting!
    1. Gonna be hard when you don’t post more pics of the comics to display their grades. Just posting VF-NM doesn’t tell anyone the grades of the key issues most would likely buy the whole lot for.
      Also consider it’s at 25% off, that means it’s likely sat for 30 days and it’s on round 2 of trying to sell.
  3. Yea, you are right. This seller will have to work harder than this if he / she expects to get top price for these books.
    Tell you the truth, there’s very few full set run’s out there in this ‘proposed’ condition (VF-NM), so if he / she gets their act together, AND be willing to accept negotiations, he / she may be on to a nice profit margin.
    The news hasn’t really spread, so when it hits mainstream media outlets, then the ‘movie / tv’ fans will start trolling EBAY, and one of them may be minted, and just want a full set of the Preacher books.
    I wish the seller well, but one has to work to get these sort of prices on the secondary market!
    With the news out now, I probably wouldn’t part with my VF+ full run of Preacher books for much less than $450 right now. Plus, I’m a holder, so I’d wait anyway until the tv show actually debuts, then I would check the secondary market to see what I could get for them….$1000,s by then I’m thinking!
    I spek that a VF+ #1 will be up around $450 / $500 on its own when the tv show airs…just my opinion!
    I SURE HOPE SO!
  4. Hey Anthony, do you think prices are highest when TV/movie news first breaks or right before said show is going to air/be released in theaters? Once something comes out, doesn’t speculation usually die down (especially movies)? Unless it’s super successful like walking dead…
    1. A little of both. Usually upon announcement prices shoot up. As it moves between announcement and first showing it dies off. If it is good and gets buzz people look for the books again and causes a second wave of speculation. The Strain has gone through three or four waves of Speculation, initially with the announcement, then it dies down, then casting announcements drove it back up, then died down and now trailers are coming out and it looks good it is going up again. I always like cashing out as soon as I can. But I do hate leaving money on the table
  5. @Glenn, this is the only Preacher print run info I can find. It is not confirmed, and is only posted as a guide:
    Taken from another Internet source:
    FWIW, Comichron says Preacher #1 had a print run of 28,200:
    http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales/1995/1995-02Diamond.html
    …but also says “These are rankings for Diamond. Capital City’s rankings are coming soon.” I can see a smaller print run because of the high cover price, being a Vertigo book, and since Garth Ennis was only starting to become popular (Hellblazer + Demon).
    From another Internet source: I don’t have a source, but I’ve collected Preacher for a long time and always understood the print run to be around 40K on issue #1.
    I’ve tried to get a definitive print run number from this Comichron website, but I can’t crack the code…Anybody?
