One Year Later: Spec Review for 5/31/17

What up CHUllectors!?! Shawn B., the One Year Later Investigator, back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
Light week having been a fifth Wednesday.
Winners

Vampirella #3 Incentive Jimmy Broxton Virgin Cover – Anthony Pick

This one could have been a QFW as well, selling for up to $40.

Saga #43 – Antony & Poyo Pick

Easy winner here just like TWD $.25 issue.

Little Nightmares #1 Regular Aaron Alexovich Cover – Anthony Pick

Quick Flip Winners

Vampirella #3 Variant Jimmy Broxton Subscription Cover – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Quick Flip Value: $8-10 Current Value: $4
Cool cover. I think I like this one better than the virgin cover.
Misses

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 2017 Annual #1 Dan Mora Virgin Variant Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $15 Current Value: $15
Sold out everywhere. Very hard to find. To be fair, Mel only posted 3 variants a year ago this week. While he didn’t spec any to go up in value this one was his favorite and I wanted to review at least one of his picks. Mel did you get this one onto a t-shirt?

  1. I did get that Power Ranger cover on a shirt .My dog Chloe put a hole in it ..grrrrr..still a great looking cover

  2. These lists are the best. They help me think twice about buying too many comics every week. Also for some reason the covers are not showing up.

    1. Yup. Every comic I pick up I now think to myself, where will this book be a year from now? I’ve saved a bunch of money by switching to “common sense” approach when buying comics.

      1. So probably on average, 150-200 books come out each week right? But for giggles, let’s say every week there’s 100 books (seems like a reasonable number to use).
That’s 5200 books every year that hit store shelves. How many of those books become “key” and or of value each year? I’d say after a year or so a conservative number would be what, 20 books go on to be valuable, as in they at least double their value and retain such value?
With that said, your chances of putting that book back and skipping it are much better than your chances of picking up the book that results in becoming that book that everyone wants. So don’t feel bad if you put a book back thinking you could miss out, cause more than likely you’re making the right decision.
