Each week, hundreds of new comic hit the shelves, each with potential. Some live up to the potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for deliver 10/2/19:
Returning Favorites
Grendel Devils Odyssey #1 – Matt Wagner’s epic, generation spanning, comic Grendel returns to stands and I could not be more happy. Focusing on Grendel Prime, the futuristic cyborg, who has been tasked with finding a new home for the human race. I am sure things will not go smoothly. (Strange that it is sold out at TFAW since TFAW is owned by Dark Horse.)
Immortal Hulk #24 – Just a great read and pickup each month.
Copra #1 – One of my favorite indy comics has landed at Image. Staring an all new chapter, if you have not had a chance to read one of the best Suicide Squad like stories, grab one.
Reprints of the Week
Batman #251 Facsimile Edition – reprinting in its entirety the classic Dennis O’Neil, Neal Adams, and Dick Giordano classic issue, ads and all. “The Joker’s Five-Way Revenge”-and it will take everything Batman has to stop the Clown Prince of Crime’s homicidal rampage!
Dollar Comics Joker #1 – Reprints the first issue of the 1975 Joker solo series.
One to Watch
Green Lantern #12 – No new Green Lantern issue after this one (until 2020 at least). Something new is coming by Grant Morrison.
As defeat looms for the Corps, Hal Jordan’s showdown with his monstrous antimatter counterpart sets the stage for the final pages of this issue-and the moment that will echo throughout the entire DC Universe! How bad is it for Hal and the Corps?
New #1’s
Ghost Rider #1 – Ghost Rider returns in his own book. I am sure there will be many Riders appearing but will we finally get to see the return of Johnny Blaze? The Black Blank is sick and will be hard to find in 9.8.
Nomen Omen #1 – New Image #1, try to grab a Blank Variant if you see them. They have been recalled and could be very hard to find.
Absolute Carnage Immortal Hulk #1 – Hulk taken over by Venom, this can’t be good for anyone, except the readers.
Contagion #1 – Marvel Copying DC’s DCeased, which copied Marvel Zombies. A seemingly unstoppable force has invaded the Marvel Universe, and it’s going to take every hero the streets of New York has to stop it! A strange substance is taking over heroes and citizens alike, draining them of their life force, stealing their knowledge and abilities, and neither science nor magic can stop it! Where did it come from? Can anything destroy it? And who will fall to its awful, overwhelming power? Look for deaths galore.
For the Covers
Fantastic Four #15 J Scott Campbell Mary Jane Cover – I hate the Marvel theme of the month covers but do like this cover. JSC signs a couple of books free at his table at NYCC and this could be an easy signature and flip.
Vengeance Of Vampirella #1 Lucio Parrillo Cover – Vengeance of Vampirella returns and with a great Parrillo cover. He will be at NYCC… Just saying.
Small Press Ones To Watch
These three are all follow up issues to series that keep selling out. Sold out at Midtown, TFAW, and other online stores.
Love She Offered #3 (Check Mycomicshop.com first)
Headless #2 (check Mycomicshop.com first)
Dead End Kids #3 (Check Mycomicshop.com first.)
Small Press Gems
Strange Skies Over East Berlin #1 – Awesome looking Boom Studios book. Herring is a disillusioned American spy stationed on the eastern side of the Berlin Wall, struggling with his role in a Cold War that seems to have no end. But when he’s sent on a mission behind enemy lines to infiltrate East German intelligence, he soon learns the Soviets have a secret weapon that could change the tides of the conflict: an alien monster that they don’t understand, and can’t control.
Small Press Pick of the Week
D Ward #1 – Keenspot doing psychological horror. Looking forward to reading this one. Keep an eye out for the 1:5 Ben Templesmith cover
Pick of the Week
Vampire State Building #1 – InHyuk Lee cover on Charlie Adlard’s new book coming off the end of the Walking Dead (actually a reprint of a Foreign Comics) but still, pure awesome. (Check Mycomicshop.com before hitting eBay)
MyComicShop is not selling the blank error variant to Nomen Omen #1. Could be less of these than I thought.
I pre-ordered the first 2 issues of Dead End Kids, but I somehow missed #3.
DCeased is a ripoff of Stephen King’s Cell. Fun beacause it has superheros, but essentially the same story
