SDCC 2020 Officially Canceled Due to Corona Virus Outbreak

And 2020 just keeps getting worse for the comic book and entertainment industry as San Diego Comic Con is officially canceled.

San Diego Comic Con is one of the two largest conventions in the United States and is a hub and hotbed for, not only, comic book news but also movie and TV news. Press release follows:

For the first time in its 50-year history San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), the organizers behind the annual pop culture celebration, announced today with deep regret, that there will be no Comic-Con in 2020,” Comic-Con said in a statement. “The event will instead return to the San Diego Convention Center from July 22-25, 2021. Recognizing that countless attendees save and plan for its conventions each year, and how many exhibitors and stakeholders rely upon its events for a major portion of their livelihood, they had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that COVID-19 concerns might lessen by summer. Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year.

  1. Most if not all conventions will be canceled more than likely. Due to the need to socially distance. NYCC was a bunch of people packed like sardines.. even if they were to open, I’m out this year. I don’t even like crowds to begin with, why would I put myself around potentially a bunch of sick people in a crowd.

    1. Baltimore may (and that’s a BIG may) be the only one I attend this year after typically attending 10 – 15 cons per year for the last 20 years

      1. I skipped Baltimore last year for the first time in years. Found that being the week after NYCC didn’t work for me. But I may go back this year.

        1. yeaaaaa…. spacing (among other aspects) is exceptional at Baltimore for sure. 100x better than SDCC or NYCC

  2. It doesn’t seem fair that they’re rolling over the badges to SDCC2021, thus leaving out anyone who didn’t get a badge for the cancelled show. They need to stop the nonsense of “if you went to the who before, you have priority” and use it as a chance to start fresh.

    1. I agree with this. I have been getting my SDCC badges luckily through someone I know in the biz. However, I do go into the lottery every year AFTER all the “who went before had 1st priority” folks. That hasn’t worked out too well for me. I don’t like relying on someone else year after year.

      1. The worst part is I went every year from the late 90s to late 2000s or so, but whoops, since I didn’t go every year since 2014 with the Twilight/True Blood/Breaking Bad crowd (I’m using it as a catch-all), I don’t get in.

I’ve been going to Wondercon and I notice they weren’t nice enough to roll those over; fine way of saying thank you. They made us pay for three separate days, with zero reward for loyalty because it isn’t “Comic Con!” even though they make us use the same portal.

  3. I told my boys yesterday that it got cancelled. My youngest was very sad and started to cry. I told him that he had one full year to think about what he wants to dress as and we started to look at Spiderman costumes.

I on the other hand, I’m glad it got cancelled as I am not finally ready for it. And I will be doing a roll over to next year. I just hope they honor my oldest son’s badge as he turns 13 later this year and was his last year he was able to get in for free.

    1. Sadly I doubt they’ll honor the age.. but that would be cool if they did. Maybe when the time comes, you have him do a video post about it.

        1. They implemented the ‘get in free under 12 policy’ the year I literally turned 13 and had been paying before, so I doubt they’ll honor it. Unless there’s enough online complaining that they have to, of course…
