RUNNERS UP

#11 Amazing Spider-Man #252 – Newsstand
Movement last week caused the newsstand edition of this key book to land on the charts, and it’s not surprising. It’s the first appearance of the black suit Spider-Man design, and fans have loved it from day one. It’s consistently on collectors’ lists of must-haves, for good reason. The homage to Amazing Fantasy #15 is the chef’s kiss on top that continues to bring fans into the hobby. We tracked 14 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 93%, with a high sale of $435 for a CGC 9.6 copy and a current VF raw of $159.

#12 The Power Fantasy #1 – Caspar Wijngaard – Chase
This chase variant was on everyone’s radar a few weeks ago, with aftermarket pricing surging as collectors were eager to chase one down. Now that there’s some distance since the release date, this variant has cooled slightly on its aftermarket value, but fans are still seeking it out. Not often does a publisher release a chase variant, but collectors notice when they do, especially when associated with a hyped series. We tracked nine copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 104%, with a high sale of $37 for an NM copy and a current NM raw of $12.

#13 Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars Vol.1 #8 – Direct
Another major black suit key hits our list! It’s not surprising, as this book will always be in demand. It establishes the origin of the black suit that would become Venom. It’s in the midst of a major storyline that has future adaptability on the big screen. We don’t know that for sure, but that hasn’t stopped fans from picking up a copy! We tracked 23 copies sold, at a 7-day trend of 25%, with a high sale of $520 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw VF of $158.

#14 The Maxx #1
Some may forget when they pass over this book in the $1 bin how popular the Maxx was/is. In the past, we got an animated series in the same vein as Spawn, a full run, and numerous other hype-building avenues. Last year, it was even announced Channing Tatum intended to develop a live-action Maxx outing. Recently, he confirmed his intentions, with writers attached to the project for Paramount. It still may never see the light of day, but we got Tatum in a Gambit getup on the big screen, so anything is possible. That encouraged fans to secure a copy of the debated first appearance of the Maxx! We tracked ten copies sold at a 7-day growth trend of 78%, with a high sale of $25 for a CGC 9.4 copy and a current NM raw of $11.

#15 Ultimate Spider-Man #1 – Marco Checchetto – Regular
When this book dropped, people were going bananas trying to secure a copy. The aftermarket value shot up and never really came down. A new floor has been established, but some couldn’t resist securing the launch of the new Ultimate Spider-Man run. It sports the first appearance of Richard and May Parker, and with the recent introduction of the Sinister Six in the most recent issue, fans are circling back around. We tracked seven copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 25%, with a high sale of $220 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw of $74.

#16 Venom: Lethal Protector Vol.1 #1 – Regular
When Venom initially dropped, this book got a boost and has with every subsequent outing. We saw it again when the trailer for the newest film dropped. It’s Venom’s first ongoing, a giant nostalgia rocket, and it’s a cheap and plentiful key. It’s an easy book to return to, and we often see fans doing so when new runs debut that call back to the title. Later this month we’re getting the Venom War: Lethal Protectors series, which typically gets this title on the mind. We tracked 20 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 17%, with a high sale of $125 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw of $20.

#17 Batman #1 (NEW 52)
Not only is this the premiere issue of one of the best Batman runs ever, but it also features the first appearance of Harper Row and Lincoln March! It’s not the biggest deal, but it’s a cherry on top. Fans were stunned when they dove into this run, with incredible writing and amazing art from Greg Capullo. He’s been in the news lately, thanks to his talents on the new Wolverine run and a whole new generation of fans being introduced to this series thanks to the recent release of Batman: The Court of Owls Saga. We tracked ten copies sold at a 7-day growth trend of 16%, with a high sale of $175 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw of $24.

#18 The Unbelievable Gwenpool #1 – Gurihiru – Regular
A new generation of fans is being introduced to Gwenpool thanks to an unlockable skin in Fortnite. While some may deny it, Fortnite does have an impact on this industry. It can serve as a springboard for a new generation of fans to discover new characters, a la Gwenpool. This is a perfect cheap book that fits the vibe, and we have been seeing plenty of aftermarket movement as a result. We tracked 13 copies sold at a 7-day trend of 13%, with a high sale of $16 for a raw NM copy and a current raw NM of $12.

#19 Hulk #1 – Ed McGuinness – Regular
The advertising is working! This book is touted as the first appearance of Red Hulk, a newer iteration of the Hulk that fans adore. Thaddeus Ross brings a different bravado to the character and a different style. With his appearance confirmed in the upcoming Captain America: New World Order, more fans than ever have been looking to secure a copy of his first appearance. We tracked ten copies sold at a 7-day growth trend of 13%, with a high sale of $248 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current NM raw of $85.

#20 Nova Vol.1 #1
We’ve been waiting on a Nova movie forever, but Kevin Feige finally confirmed we’ll be getting a TV series in a few years. Still, that hasn’t dulled the hype fans have. The first appearance of Richard Rider Nova has been a key book for years, but it’s quietly been seeing a rise in the aftermarket. It speaks to the love fans feel for the IP. Marvel does their best to scratch the itch for those Nova’s heads, releasing series like Annihilation 2099 to keep us occupied until we get something new. However, it never beats the classics! We tracked 11 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 8%, with a high sale of $298 for a CGC 9.6 copy and a current NM raw of $56.
