CHU was in attendance for a two day event hosted by Coffin Comics called The Black Gala. While we have covered comic-cons of all sizes, this was an entirely unique event which I haven’t seen from any other publisher. Coffin is bold in trying new things.
This signature event was based on art by two of Coffin’s most popular artists: Dawn McTeigue and Eris Basaldua (e.Bas). As the guests of honor, they collaborated on a connecting cover:
Everything started a few weeks ago by receiving this mysterious invite delivered to my mailbox:
The first night was a mixer where high fashion was intertwined with the Coffin Headquarters gothic aesthetic. Black cocktail attire was the dress code, the elegance of the event felt like a movie. Once inside, you were given another mystery surprise – a purple satchel which contained a special challenge coin and key chain.
Once inside, it was a celebration of Coffin’s artistic vision and the camaraderie of the fan base. We were treated to food, open bars, and shenanigans. Attendees could mingle with Dawn and Eric. Birthdays were recognized, and people were randomly challenged to present their coins. Anyone who couldn’t produce their coin within four steps were susceptible to some playful ribbing (all in good fun of course!).
The next morning started day 2 with a signing event open to the public, along with opening the Coffin Store which included rare Vault items.
Steady lines for most of the day to get items signed by Eric and Dawn, along with Brian. Coffin created several unique variants: ultra foil, pearl editions, metal covers, embossed covers, and editions hand embellished by the artists. At the end of the day, several covers were sold out or running very low but may still be available on their site.
Those living in AZ get spoiled because Coffin brings in their best artists from all over the world. Then we get to hang at Coffin HQ to spend time with friends, without paying for a convention badge. The headquarters is thoughtfully designed and if you are ever passing through AZ, come for an event or try contacting them in advance to see if a visit can be accommodated. You can sign up on their mailing list to get notified of the next event. Or come join the fun at Sworn Nation on FB. Don’t be shy, we will be happy to see you!
Interested in a new Coffin character in the ‘ultra-violent splatter horror mixed with humor’ genre? They have a Kickstarter running for Mike Morgue. From what I have seen, it’s going to hit the right notes of over-the-top horror with some heart. Keep collecting CHU!
