RUNNERS UP
11 Giant-Size X-Men #1 – Gil Kane – Custom Hasbro Gamestop Reissue – Foil
Amongst the deluge of Pokémon collectors visiting their local Gamestop recently, we comic nerds have been making appearances right beside them. As part of a promotion where you had to purchase any two Marvel Legends action figures, you had the opportunity to secure this book along with them. That is, if your local GameStop received copies to give. And it was a big one for collectors, as it’s an amazing foil reprint of one of the most iconic comics of all time in Giant Size X-Men #1, featuring several first appearances in Colossus, Nightcrawler, Thunderbird, and Storm. We tracked 12 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 21% with a high sale of $48 for a NM copy and a current raw NM FMV of $33.
12 The Silver Surfer Vol.1 #3
The Silver Surfer has been firmly in the spotlight for what feels like months now. Despite it being Shalla Bal as Silver Surfer in the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps, most of the discussion has centered on the Norrin Radd iteration of the character. It’s led to numerous keys seeing after-market heat, and that includes this one. Not only is it the first cover appearance of Shalla Bal, but it also features the first appearance of Mephisto, who has been rumored to appear in the MCU for half a decade at this point. Recently, however, it’s been confirmed he will appear as Mephisto down the line in addition to his appearance in (potential spoilers ahead) Iron Heart. We tracked 16 copies sold at a 7-day growth trend of 5%, with a high sale of $5725 for a CGC 9.6 copy and a current raw VG FMV of $253.
13 Spawn #1 – Todd McFarlane – Direct
The Spawn train keeps on rolling! He’s the aftermarket king for a reason, with numerous titles circulating, the Toddfather in the news every other week, and Spawn just being flat out pretty cool. It’s a rite of passage for the community at this point, and it seems like his FMV steadily rises as this book continues to change hands. We tracked 40 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 29% with a high sale of $115 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $24.
14 Star Wars #1 – Howard Chaykin – Newsstand
This book is constantly simmering under the surface, and occasionally, gets enough action that it makes our list. It features the first appearances of some of the biggest players in the Star Wars universe, and is a mainline key that collectors of the IP can get behind. It’s the book that started it all for many collectors out there and has a firm hold on the childhood memories of more than a few. And, with Star Wars constantly in the news, both good and bad, this book is bound to see some extra attention by proximity. We tracked 30 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 15% with a high sale of $775 for a CGC 9.6 copy and a current raw VF FMV of $207.
15 The New Mutants #98 – Rob Liefeld – Regular
Deadpool is a modern-day juggernaut, with collectors constantly picking up his first appearance when they are able. Part of that’s that Deadpool is constantly making waves, with new series (Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time), movies, games, and the anticipation for what’s to come. Recently, rumors began to circulate that we would get another Deadpool and Wolverine pairing, given the success of their film. But when his face feels like it’s everywhere, along with the face of the guy who plays the character on the big screen, it’s easy to see how he worms his way into people’s brains—subliminal messaging at its finest. We tracked 12 copies sold at a 7-day growth trend of 4%, with a high sale of $1,320 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $351.
16 Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1 – Ivan Talavera – Virgin (1:50)
These risque covers have been all the rage lately, and Ivan Talavera has the style down pat. This time, Dark Phoenix received the treatment, and since its release, it has been far and away the winner of the various variants for that book. It has been the book collectors have keyed in on, and that trend continues, albeit at a smaller clip as the market slims up. We tracked eight copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 6% with a high sale of $76 for a NM copy and a current raw NM FMV of $69.
17 Gehenna: Naked Aggression #1 – Matteo Scalera (1:25)
Marketed as inspired by “Gun Honey and Elektra: Assassin,” this book was bound to get a hard look! And it did, especially this 1:25 ratio from Matteo Scalera, featuring Gehenna and a roster of foes front and center. It’s the highest ratio variant that’s seeing the most action, and the “rarer” variants for this book typically lean a little more risque, which isn’t every collector’s cup of tea. This variant filled the need for a subset of collectors who likely had to pivot to the internet to secure a copy. We tracked 12 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 100% with a high sale of $35 for a NM copy and a current raw NM FMV of $25.
18 X-Men: Hellfire Vigil #1 – Rose Besch – Virgin (1:50)
Ya boy Wolverine is having torrid love affairs with half the X roster. This time, he shares a daughter with his teammate Storm, Furaha. This book marks her first appearance, and this 1:50 virgin variant from Rose Besch grabbed collectors’ attention enough to propel it onto our list. We tracked nine copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 12% with a high sale of $70 for a NM copy and a current raw NM FMV of $56.
19 Star Wars: Doctor Aphra – Chaos Agent #1 – Sara Pichelli (1:25)
Doctor Aphra isn’t a household name like Luke or Leia, but she has certainly developed quite a fanbase. They’ve been steadily showing up for her first appearance and major issues, and now, for the start of a new run! It doesn’t hurt that the talented Sara Pichelli lent her talents to this 1:25 variant, one of the few available and an excellent homage to Catwoman #51. We tracked 12 copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 23% with a high sale of $150 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $47.
20 Exquisite Corpses #1 – Michael Walsh – 2nd Print – B&W Polybagged With Trading Card (1:10)
This title was the latest James Tynion fare to hit the market and immediately see crazy aftermarket hype. Since it hit shelves, collectors have been poring over every iteration available. Over 40 variants for this book alone, and some are bound to stand out. Take this book, the second print,1:10 polybagged B&W variant. It has all the things going for it that the aftermarket has coveted lately, once again landing it on our list. We tracked six copies sold, at a 7-day growth trend of 20% with a high sale of $35 for a NM copy and a current raw NM FMV of $31.
