Comic Book Picks of the week for 7/23/14

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each one with potential. We pick the books that we think will have the most heat behind them.
This Wednesday is Batman day, make sure you pick up a copy of the Detective Comics #27 free comic at your local retailer. It is a retelling of the Batman’s origins in honor of Batman’s 75th anniversary. Done by Brad Meltzer and Chip Kidd, this freebie could be worth a little something in the future.
The Pick of the Week:
Tuki: Save the Humans: Jeff Smith of Bone and Rasl fame is back with a new Cartoon Books series. A new series about a stone age wanderer who just wants to be left alone as he attempts to escape the the dangers of the ancient savannas, and be the first human being to leave Africa. Jeff Smith books, like wine, get better with age. This is a long haul book.
The Small Press Gem:
Afterlife with Archie #6: Archie has been in the news recently with the death of Archie in Life With Archie #36. In addition, with SDCC coming up in a couple of days, the new Sabrina series is in collector’s mind, with Afterlife With Archie Sabrina Variant #666 being released at the con. Well, this issue features one of the sexy Pepoy variants with Sabrina on the cover. In addition, the book features a story about what has been going on with Sabrina since she disappeared in the early part of the first story line. The regular cover also features an awesome Francavilla Sabrina cover.
Speaking of Archie, Life with Archie #37 also drops this week. The Death of Archie issues have been selling well and this would be a good book to bundle with them. Dynamic Forces is also preselling copies of Life with Archie #37 signed by Alex Ross. I love signed comics, and for around $15 this isn’t a bad idea.
The Children of the 80’s one:
Transformers vs. GI Joe #1: IDW taps into the retor feel for children of the 80’s with this awesome crossover. There are tons of people who grew up on the toy line inspired cartoons and comic books who might just pop in for the reminder of their childhood.
The one everyone is picking up anyway:
Saga #21: Since coming off the last TPB break, Saga has been running on all cylinders and has been selling out. It has rekindled the love of many readers for this epic, well, saga.
The outside chance:
Supreme: Blue Rose: Warren Ellis. That is all. Now seriously though, Image is trying to bring back their Superman archetype.
That is it for us this week. let us know what you are spec-ing on.

    1. I dont know but i ordered a ton of the variant. Im hoping the image is less blacked out and shows more of her, but probably will not fulfill my wishes.

      1. Midtown has a variant to #4? the only other variant I’ve seen is the Conquest variant with a JSC Black Cat cover.

  1. Yea, this week isn’t great. Only thing I’m looking forward to is Wild Blue Wonder #5, only because it’s been FOREVER since #4 came out, and I love the story.

      1. I remember that! I actually went out and got 10 copies of #1 dirt cheap because of that news. Still got my fingers crossed it’ll come through!

      2. Yeah, I’ve enjoyed this one as well. I just wish it didn’t take a freaking year to release all 5 issues. I also wish it was an ongoing, which it easily could be.

  2. speaking of delayed book, Day Men #4 is supposedly coming out next week. If that one couldve stayed on schedule…..and it still has a media deal in place.

      1. I talked to Michael Alan Nelson, one of the writers, at DCC and he pretty much said Stelfreeze is too busy to commit to making this come out every month. The story is great, but you can’t put out a book every 6 months and keep readers interested.

      2. Yeah, besides Wild Blue Yonder, all the other awesome comics that are on this 4-6 issue release per year, I’m gonna start waiting until the TPB comes out so I can just read them all in one sitting. I can’t be bothered to read #1 this month and then #2 around Christmas.
Jupiters Legacy is the other one. I’m not buying the next issue when it comes out. I might as well wait to buy the oversized 3 issues in one for the same price as a regular issue like Millar did to us last Christmas. MPH has been sort of on schedule but I think the only reason he’s pulled that off is usually Image and other publishers want the first 3 pretty much done before they commit themselves (someone correct me if I’m wrong though on that).

          1. Yeah, I’m with you. It’s been months since the last issue, I’m not gonna bother with it for any future releases. I’ll wait when I can pick up the TPB or digital versions for dirt cheap to read if I come back around.
Off topic: Yesterday I took the kids to a public library that I had no idea was stocking Graphic Novels to check out. I just found me a great resource to use on books I missed out on, didn’t want to spend money on. I picked up “The Last of Us” TPB to read.. 🙂

    1. For a dollar and then they want to charge you around $10 a month. It’s better to just pay for the whole year (I currently do), sometimes I find coupon codes to get it down to about $60-$70 for the year. I enjoy it, I like having access to all those comics from my phone, tablet or computer. You can even skip buying the latest issues if you don’t mind waiting around 4-6 months as they’ll start to pop up on the Marvel Unlimited.

        1. Missing out man.. missing out! 🙂
I like Hickman and a few other writers Marvel has going for them (Remender, Gillen, Bendis). I dropped some titles but I’ve always loved the Avengers (although I don’t pick them all up, the # of titles they have is just overkill on some of them). The big plus for the Marvel app though is just instant access to most of their comics for reference, lookup, etc. 🙂

          1. On a side note not related to anything. I want to give a big shout out to Hastings for not only having Enormous #1 Hastings Variant available on their web site in July 7, but also charging my credit card, and not shipping the book. Thanks to their great customer service for not telling me they never shipped the book, but now telling me the book is out of stock now and they cannot fulfill my order at this time. Sucks. Had the order in early. Had been charged. Never reversed. Never an email. Never shipped the book. And never refunded the money. They claimed the money had been refunded but never showed up on my credit card account.

            1. That sucks.
I guess I’m fortunate enough to have gotten mine without issues. I got my order in quick but not super quick. Maybe it was also by a nearest per store basis as well. It just seems weird so many had cancellations when they put in their orders at the same time/day I did.

                1. Yeah, that tells me it was not first come first serve but they likely distribute the orders to the nearest local stores to handle. That’s why some got cancellations, others didn’t.

                2. Which is horrible way to handle orders on ecommerce site. If you have products and you sell online as well, the orders should be first come, first serve. They should yank from shelf from store #2 if store #1 didn’t have them to send as the orders come in. 😉
