Bleeding Cool runs Wolverine Spec for X-23

Bleeding Cool ran a neat little spec on the Death of Wolverine storyline and the first appearance of X-23, the female Wolverine Clone first appearing in NYX #3

We have already run the rumour that X-23 will take over the role of Wolverine in the Marvel Universe, following his death – and a stint in the colours by an inverted Sabretooth.
But if so… could her first appearances get a little speculator attention? The obvious one, featuring her first appearance in NYX #3, already a hot book.
But what about Wolverine #80. A dollar book or less… and featuring..

And that is your official first appearance on X-23, in the test tube…. and ten years before the character’s appearance, in person.
And right now selling from 78 cents on eBay.

So, is this a random occurrence, or something more. And can this little easter egg cause prices of Wolverine #80 go up? Looks like it already has.

  1. This is one of those ones that makes most collectors hate speculators even more than normal. I don’t hate speculators since I dabble myself but I wish you wouldn’t fuel the fire for ones that are obviously just a coincidence. Yes the test tube says 23, what’s the first thing that pops in you head when I say the number 23? My first thought is Michael Jordan.

    1. Hey Corona. Is it a coincidence? I am sure. I was going to ignore it until I saw the price jumps on eBay and the listings as “first x-23 in test tube”.
More than likely this will be a blip. But if you are like me and have 10s of thousands of comics, an opportunity like this is excellent for selling a book I would otherwise be unable to. I do not have any for sale as am FYI.
As for adding fuel to the fire, not sure I am doing that. I do give spec news, that is why a lot of people come here.
Anyway, not everything I post is for everyone. I do appreciate you coming and contributing though.

      1. I more blame Rich over at bleeding cool if I had to put the blame somewhere, if there is any to begin with. Although it was apparently posted somewhere else several weeks ago and rich posted it without providing a link or credit to the person who discovered it.

  2. Time to go through the back issue bin at my LCS. I’m usually on top of the bleeding cool reports, I was slow to this one. Thanks!

  3. Like many people, I picked this one up cheap back when NYX #3 first showed us X-23’s first appearance in 2004. A lot of people were talking about it back then, so I doubt it was a coincidence (at least, her character’s name wasn’t). This may not be “new” news (since it had buzz back in 2004), but I’m glad to see it reported again — and I always appreciate the current tips and news bytes we get here. That’s why we come here to this awesome site!

  4. Like I have said elsewhere this one is still key just not a first appearance. This comic may have been featured in Wizard magazine way back when but I cannot find the page. I see nothing wrong with the writers using this past story to give X-23 roots in the Marvel Universe and would much rather it go down this way then say retconning Jessica Jones into ASM 4.

  5. First appearance of X-23 lol that’s a reach. This is kind of like first appearance of Wolverine in an ad in Daredevil.

  6. This is pure fanon hogwash. Creator Craig Kyle has PERSONALLY disavowed any connection between this issue and X-23. Furthermore, it’s not referenced in ANY X-23 story, nor does Marvel itself acknowledge it as a reference or mention to the character.
    It’s GARBAGE.

    1. Marvel’s editor at the time actually refused to say either way. I wouldn’t call it x-23’s first at all but it’s a key. The new movie also gives this comic some validity due to the post credit scene from X-Men Apocalypse.

      1. How is it “key?” Marvel doesn’t acknowledge it. It’s never mentioned in the books. THE CHARACTER’S OWN CREATOR OUTRIGHT DISMISSES IT HAVING ANYTHING TO DO WITH HER, AND ACTIVELY DISCOURAGES ANYONE FROM BUYING THE ISSUE. It’s pure, unadulterated FANON.
The test tube in question doesn’t even SAY X-23. It says “Logan X” on one label, and “23” on a completely separate label. This is nothing but speculator fuel to grab a few cheap extra bucks on an insignificant issue.
Furthermore, Apocalypse doesn’t enter into the equation at all. It’s a completely separate universe that has NOTHING to do with the main Comics Verse.
This issue is completely, totally, UNRELATED to X-23 in ANY way, shape, or form. PERIOD.

        1. Just curious why this is coming up now since the original article was posted so long ago? Seems irrelevant at this point. Prices went up, prices went down, some people say it is, some say it isn’t…

          1. Because this and the BC article it references are still being used for justification by people trying to unload the issue on unsuspecting/uninformed buyers, so it very much IS still relevant. Especially since Logan’s release has sparked an increased interest in the character.

            1. I can’t help what people do with their own books. However, and I stand behind the fact, I neither bought nor sold any. Speculation is speculation what people choose to do with it is up to them. You have taken a point against it, noted, but I do not really see anyone else still talking about it.

        2. and for the record, I did not sell or buy any copies if the “speculator fuel to grab a few cheap extra bucks on an insignificant issue.” Also, it was bleeding cool so take it with a grain of salt.

        3. It’s either an incredible councidence or it is connected in some way. Her creation in the film Logan through the use of Logan’s blood which was shown in the post credit sequence for X-Men Apocalypse gives this book some validity as show by sales of the book. It’s a 10-20 book ungraded, simple as that. Do you have anything in print to show the creators say what you say they said? A tweet perhaps? I remember the editor of Marvel refusing to comment when the book was brought up back in the early 2000s in Wizard Magazine.

Comment by Kyle, direct from his Facebook page. Pure coincidence, and any attempt to connect the two is 100% fanon.
And no, Apocalypse is completely irrelevant. It’s a MOVIE. It’s a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT UNIVERSE from the books, and saying that Apocalypse gives it validity is like saying events in Ultimate Universe give validity to fan wank about the main universe. Any bump in sales is entirely the result of buyers or sellers who haven’t done due diligence on their research, or speculators intentionally deceiving potential buyers to make an extra buck.

              1. Ummmm no they don’t. FOX makes the X-Men films, not Disney/Marvel. However even then, the MCU has just as much bearing on the comics as Fox’s films. Which is to say, absolutely NONE WHATSOEVER. Case in point: the events of Captain America: Civil War are COMPLETELY divorced from the events of the actual Civil War event in the comics. About the only thing it had in common was a plot centering around an ideological difference between Stark and Cap resulting from a case of superheroics gone bad leading to a conflict between them.
How is that so hard to understand? The films and comics are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT UNIVERSES, and if the case of the X-Men, come from COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STUDIOS. What happens in the films may draw inspiration from events in the comics (X-23’s film origins draw primarily from Kyle and Yost’s X-23: Innocence Lost) but they do NOT inform them.

                1. I think you are confused. I was talking about the films. The same studio made Logan and X-Men Apocalypse. We can go round and round but the comic saw renewed interest after the post credit scene from X-Men Apocalypse. It’s a book X-23 fans seem to want based on either an incredible coincidence or something else. Again, when the editor at the time refuses to comment you have to agree that it’s going to spark conversation.
