DC 3D Villains Month Print Runs and the Rarest Issues
Article and analysis by comic book historian Terry Hoknes – www.HoknesComics.com – hoknes@hotmail.com
The results are finally in for the most hyped up comics of 2013. Now for the first time we can find out how rare and not rare the issues are. Which standard issues are more common than the 3D versions? Which are the rarest issues overall and how did they rank compared to other issues?
There were 52 3D covers and the same 52 comics were all released with standard covers of the same cover image priced $1.00 cheaper due to NOT having the 3D cover effect.
Here are the best selling 3D cover versions during September 2013 from DC Comics.
Predictably all 4 of the regular Batman issues were the best sellers as Batman is always the #1 best selling DC title month to month.
Note prices however are not very consistent as the Penguin cover has a much smaller print run than the Joker issue. Batman completist’s long term should keep values up on these issues even though they are the most common. For Batman completists the Jokers Daughter is the rarest of all the Batman related 3D covers.
Only the top 6 3D covers had print runs over 50,000 after the numbers drop quickly and all print runs are decent but modest. Only the top 21 of the 52 3D covers had print runs over 40,000. 45 of the 52 covers had print runs over 30,000.
Print runs were not very consistent as for example 3 issues of Action Comics had much higher print runs than the Metallo issue Did DC do this on purpose ? What was the strategy of shorting only 1 of the 4 issues of a run? Was this all a game to create a panic and make customers rush to buy these books as DC did achieve 100% sell through rate.

There does not seem to be a real pattern to which ones were underprinted. 3 of the 4 Batman The Dark Knight issues make the list of the smallest print runs. These all had print runs under 31,000 and while these books are not at all rare they are simply the “rarest” of the batch. Swamp Thing #23.1 is the rarest of all issues so anyone who was collecting a run of all 52 covers should have found this the hardest to find. It is the only issue printed under 26,000 copies. Jokers Daughter became the hottest comic of 2013 in pre-sales and deservedly so as it turned out the print run was the lowest of all Batman related titles and the only one under 30,000.
It will be interesting to see if over time if these Top 10 rarest are the ones that prove hardest to find in the future and could be the ones that go up in value. Of course that will only happen if demand for those particular titles stay strong.

So far only 1 of the 52 standard covers has sold at Diamond and surprisingly its the one with the largest print run – Batman #23.1 – Joker is sold out. Only 7 of the 52 standard covers sold over 30,000 copies. In the long run the standard covers could prove to be more valuable than the 3D covers as the print runs are much smaller for the majority of issues. Only 28 of the 52 even sold over 20,000 copies each. These print runs are modest for DC print runs.

Swamp Thing #23.1 ranks top of this list just as it did with the 3D covers. Unanimously the rarest of all the DC Villain month comics.
Numerous Superman and Wonder Woman related comics rank very low for standard covers.
3 comics make the top 10 rarest of both lists proving that stores not only did not get 3D copies in the first place but they did not realize there was a shortage to order more standard covers. These 3 therefore are the rarest of the villain month:
Animal Man (Arcane), Green Arrow (Count Vertigo), Wonder Woman (First Born)
RETAILERS UP THEIR ORDERS ON STANDARD COVERS
While many retailers and collectors realized that certain 3D covers were going to sell out they would up their orders on the standard edition. This can be seen happening with a few of the most hyped issues including: Jokers Daughter, Dial E, Harley Quinn, Lobo.
In fact there are certain Standard Covers that actually have LARGER print runs than the 3D covers. This includes:
Justice League (Lobo), Batman The Dark Knight (Jokers Daughter), Justice League (Dial E), and almost equal in orders was: Justice League (Deadshot)
COMBINING PRINT RUNS OF 3D AND STANDARD COVERS
Finally lets combine the print runs of the 3D and standard covers and look for books that stand out in either 3D or standard orders. Also for those who just want to READ a copy of each book this will give you an idea of which books will likely turn up the easiest.
The top 6 3D covers still hold the Top 6 rank when adding the standard cover editions.
But then the chart begins to drastically change as issues of Detective Comics and Justice League get bumped up the list with large standard print runs. Yet with some titles bumped up the list certain other titles have to fall including issues of Batman and Robin and Justice League America. Jokers Daughter gets bumped UP the list to #24 most common villains month comic from a low 3D #46. Ventriliquist as the biggest bump up the chart due to high standard edition print run. Now ranks #26 instead of #49. All the issues of Action Comics get bumped way DOWN the chart due to retailers ordering very few standard covers in comparison. These could prove to be harder to find in years to come.

#1 3D VILLAINS MONTH WEEK #4 (DC 2013) 13 different 3D covers came out in week #4 of the villains month campaign. Here are the highest prices achieved for each. Some high sales actually came in pre-sales online. Most prices have settled to about 50% of these listed prices. Week Four Joker’s Daughter at $110.00 Doomsday at $20 Black Adam at $20 Killer Croc at $13 First Born at $13 Man-Bat at $13 Bane at $12 Sinestro at $12 Secret Society at $12 Ocean Master at $12 Parasite at $11. Joker’s Daughter is without the single most hyped up and hottest comic of the entire year and may have set world record prices for a pre-sale of a new release as collectors were paying up to $110.00 each for a copy of this book just to make sure they got one. That is paying almost 40x cover price before it even came out. Very few customers got a copy unless they were a regular file customer for Batman: The Dark Knight series. It was the hottest of all the 3D covers and the hottest comic of the entire year. However the downside I predicted is that prices could only come down and that has already started to happen.
#2 3D VILLAINS MONTH WEEK #3 (DC 2013) 13 different 3D covers came out in week #3 of the villains month campaign. Here are the highest prices achieved for each. #4 3D VILLAINS MONTH WEEK #1 (DC 2013) 13 different 3D covers came out in week #2 of the villains month campaign. Here are the highest prices achieved for each. Interesting stuff. This allocation should never had happen. Judging from the print run Jokers Daughter should had been very easy to find. I still don’t have one. LOL
Jokers Daughter had so much hype that at that point I think anyone who saw a copy scooped them up including speculators and dealers who knew they had big money on their hands. In a sense you could say that having a copy of that book was like “printing money”.
Thanks Hoknes for the info. This is good. I’m happy to have copies of all and sold the multiples I had. At this point, I’ll be taking a break. Much appreciated.
So while there are roughly 300+ copies of Jokers Daughter for sale on eBay, there’s actually 100 of the Swamp Thing Arcane. JD seems to still be fetching anywhere between $15-$30 (though it looks like most of the auctions starting over $20 aren’t getting a lot of nibbles, probably not until the last minute or so) while you can pick up ST Arcane for a few bucks over retail price.
Demand is always the bigger factor when it comes to the value.
We’ll only see Jokers Daughter drop, I’m still predicting it’s a $15 book on average. The pre-sales was where you got your suckers to buy it at super inflated prices. 🙂
I”ve always wanted to know who are the buyers that will pay the $100 in pre-sale. Are these informed buyers? What is the mentality for overpaying that much ? I dont know anyone that would do that but they are out there. Who are they ?
They most certainly not informed buyers, but there are some definite informed sellers. If you could have assured that you would have a copy on the day of release you could have presold when the books were
$70-$130. I was sure i had one but if things went pair shaped did not want to risk a refund of a presale. I had three locked up and two fell through.
Hey fellahs! Like 90210 & Dakoit & I said a little while back: THE SMART MONEY WAS TO GRAB A FEW VF+ COPIES OF BATMAN FAMILY #6!
Below are a few final auctions of late!

I think both of my copies would grade-out at ~9.6 (certainly 9.2 – 9.6)!
BF6 is a RARE Bronze-Age book that will hold it’s value (and definitely increase) for some time to come! Even if they killed-off the ‘character’ right now, I think the moniker of JD will live on for quiet a while now. DC can now do so much with the character. In my mind, JD is ALL OF A SUDDEN entrenched in the DC Universe, only 3rd behind BATMAN AND THE JOKER (in my opinion, of course). I’m not a DC guy by any stretch of the imagination, but I know when a character HAS ARRIVED!
I think the sheer CHAOS surrounding the release of the 3D JD speaks volumes; WAS IT SOLELY BECAUSE OF THE GIMMICK 3D COVER, OR WAS IT THE TOTAL ANTICIPATION OF THE ARRIVAL OF THE CHARACTER ‘THE JOKER’S DAUGHTER’?
I think you know my stance!

p.s. my 2p on the wolvie-blue, or whatever is going on there…like someone just said….WHERE ARE ALL OF THOSE DAKEN 1ST APPEARANCE BOOKS? IMO!

The seller below is ambitious maybe, BUT WAIT UNTIL JD MAKES HER MOVIE DEBUT…FAIRLY SOON (IMO)! What price could you seriously obtain from a NM COPY of Incredible Hulk #181 right now. Same age book; major character’s 1st appearance! ALL wolvie books shot up in price when he first hit the big screen!

I bought my VF+ copy of IH 181 in 1998 for 180GBP (back then it was 1.46 to the dollar…so it cost me ~$260), but obviously now that book is worth $1,000 +, AND WILL NEVER GO DOWN IN PRICE!
Just my observations!
Just think of the frenzy we just witnessed for JD, NOW MULTIPLY THAT 10-FOLD WHEN SHE HITS HOLLYWOOD!!!!!!!!!!
SO, A $250 NM COPY OF BF6 NOW, JUST MAY BE A STEAL…COULD BE PRICELESS IN A FEW YEARS! TOTALLY IMO!
