Thanks to my friends at the Comic Book Speculating and Investing community at Google+ for this tip.Β
Looks like the Super Bowl Commercial buzz is starting to catch up to Captain America #6 (2005).
Bidding is quite nice, and auctions have recently closed for as high as $20+ dollars for a near mint raw copy. A two copy set went for $40. Β The variant cover is going for about $25.
Active Auctions can be seen here: Captain America #6 (2005)
And on Amazon :here, or here, and the variant.
The google+ group can be found here and are a great group of guys. Check them out.

Anyone know the print run on both versions of these?
I think total numbers between both covers was 46,360, at least according to ComicChron.
I love me some Brubaker.. I actually picked up the full run of Captain America (2005 Volume 5) for around $120 about 4 months back, which they included both covers of #6.
Most originally went after #14 in this series which made it more valuable. Now that the movie is coming out based on these comics, a lot of people are likely going to go after his first appearance.
Appreciate the post. This is site is one of my favorites and has given me some awesome tips the past few months I found it. Hope to help out as much as I can
Thanks Trey, Loving your forum on Google+
On Twitter Ed Brubaker said that as far as he is concerned the first Winter Soldier is #1.
That is what I am thinking. From what I have found it looks to be #1 as the first appearance.
I know the debate about Cap 1 being the first Winter Soldier. I will have to pull out my issues and read them, but I think 1 is a cameo.
It is a cameo but I’ve never understood the cameo vs 1st appearance debate. Why does every major character who was first shown in a teaser or cameo have a later “full apperance” count as the 1st appearance? For some reason the Darkseid cameo in Jimmy Olsen rates over the full appearance in Forever People but other than that people don’t count cameos. Even KISS had a cameo before the accepted first full appearance in Howard the Duck! It doesn’t make sense. Here is another odd one: M.O.D.O.K. is first seen in Tales of Suspense #94 but all over the internet his first appearance is listed as #93. He isnt shown in the issue at all! He is talked about but not actually shown AT ALL! I dont get it. If a character is drawn on the page and seen by the reader that should be the first appearance!
You and I agree on that. It’s the old Incredible Hulk 180 181 argument. What it comes down to is what is commonly accepted as the first appearance. People have gone nuts with this to the point they are claiming Previews Issues are the first appearance of The Walking Dead.
I call cameo appearances as they are, cameo appearances but they can be called 1st appearance, just not full. 1st full appearances are where you get the full picture or view of them, they have speaking parts, etc.
As to which one is more valuable, I let demand figure that out.
But yeah, too many people get all huffy puffy. Honestly, a cameo appearance is the real “1st Appearance” but it just so happens sometimes the “1st Full Appearance” is more valuable or sought after in the collecting world.
Well said.

ok folks, it’s simple. Let’s take the Incredible hulk 180 & 181 debate, for instance.
Hypothetically, If you had $200 in your pocket, and could only make ONE SINGLE PURCHASE (my story, my rules), and you wanted to buy Wolverine’s first X (I put this ‘X’ here instead of ‘appearance’, so we can hopefully differentiate between a number of things); which book would you buy…Incredible Hulk #180, or Incredible Hulk #181?
I put the ‘X’ there because of the word ‘APPEARANCE’! Yes, Wolvie’s first ‘appearance’ was in 180, but you have to think back to the ’70’s (ok, some of you were probably still in diapers, if born at all) when comics weren’t that popular. Stan Lee and those guys had to come up with creative ways to make kids (THIS WAS PRACTICALLY THE LAST TIME WHEN COMICS WERE ACTUALLY FOR KIDS) want to buy the next issue.
So, when they (Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Len Wein, Herb Trimpe, and Johnny Romita Sr.) put Wolvie on the last page of 180….owwww, it was exciting because you knew the next issue was the beginning of something special: THE WOLVERINE! And as the front cover of 181 so eloquently puts it…….AND NOW, THE WOLVERINE!
So, simply put, which comic would you buy – 180 or 181, if you wanted to see Wolverine’s first ‘X’ (and this is why I put ‘X’)… ‘X’ is a variable…you can substitute whatever you want there…battle, fight, claws, adventure….blah, blah!
So, to me, if you wanted to see anything SIGNIFICANT relating to Wolverine, other than a one panel still…I WOULD BUY INCREDIBLE HULK #181!!!!!!!
And to me, that’s why a CAMEO is a cameo, but a character’s first ‘X’ in a book, is MUCH, MUCH MORE VALUABLE to comic fans, readers, and of course COLLECTOR’S!
…And of course the publishers today are still using this tactic to sell books.
Most recently, of course is Captain Marvel #14 or #17 for the first (hahahaha, here we go again) ‘appearance’ of the new Ms. Marvel!
Still, to each his / her own, I suppose! Where you spend your bucks is totally up to you!
…And debate’s like these are what keeps the comic train rolling along! Toot-Toot!!!!!!
GREAT TOPICAL POST @garwell!
o.k, o.k, for the completest among us, Wolverine does speak in ish 180:
All right, you freaks — just hold it! If you really want to tangle with someone — why not try your luck against — the Wolverine!
So, hey, if this is enough for the masses to call 180 his first ‘X’ for this reason, fine by me, but it’s still the first ‘X’s’ in 181 for me!

What about the Foom book that had started floating around as the first appearance?

FOOM #2 falls under the banner of “prototype” I think.
Yeah.
Ahhhhaaaaaaa, the debate rages on!
All I can say really is: WHERE IS THAT FOOM BOOK AS FAR AS TOP BRONZE-AGE BOOKS THAT COLLECTOR’S DESIRE TO OWN???????????
I’m afraid I don’t have all of the answer’s, and that’s for sure, but that’s the beauty of it all…IT’S THE COLLECTIVE COMICS COMMUNITY THAT ULTIMATELY DECIDES WHAT’S WHAT!
Obviously, the overall comic communities say regarding this Foom book didn’t bless it as the true 1st ‘appearance’ of Wolverine!!!!!
The community has spoken! And if you think a few single folks can sway the community, go out and buy 100 copies of that Foom book, AND TRY SELLING THEM ON EBAY!
Let’s just say, I hope you have a big box for LONG-TERM STORAGE!!!!!!!!
Yikes!!!!!!!
Just messin’, but yea, seriously, you are right, there are tons of circumstances like your illustration, Flipper, but like I said, I think it’s great that the final decision rests with EVERYONE!!!!!
Crazy ‘ole game!!!!!
…And, let’s face it, some Cameo’s just aren’t cool!
C’mone, The Incredible Hulk #181 is one of the most iconic, and coolest books in Comics History…ALWAYS WILL BE!!!!!!!!
IT’S THE WOLVERINE, FOR COMICS SAKE!!!!!!!!!
C’MONE….REALLY, WHO WOULD BUY 180 INSTEAD OF 181?
‘Nuff Said!

Regardless, people are snatching up #6 as the first full appearance. My LCBS still had some available at retail price. I snagged up two copies, one regular and one variant, the better ones out of the bunch without the least amount of wear (some were pretty bad, mostly spine stress creases).
I’ll be posting these suckers online to flip. π
And I’m checking these issues myself right now. I recall #6 being full appearance but it’s been a few months since I read them last, but Marvel Unlimited to the rescue, no need to whip out the comics to find out. π
So I skimmed through Captain America Vol 5 issues 1 – 5 and this is the only thing that stood out if it is Winter Soldier, it’s on the second to last page of #1 right before Red Skull is assassinated.
There are no other mentions of him except as Bucky, with a brief one pane view of a flashback with Bucky in the background.
Issues 2 – 5 only show more Captain America flashbacks of Bucky, not of Winter Soldier.
The first full appearance of Winter Soldier in his full costume is definitely #6.
I love Marvel Unlimited! π
So yes, more of a cameo. You never see his face and you only get the glimpse of his artificial limb/hand, etc, that’s the only way you know it’s Winter Soldier is the pane with his hand picking up the phone.
Hand only huh? Sounds like the first Doomsday.

Thanks to Drew for the clarification. (And I guess to a lesser extent thanks to Marvel Unlimited)

Well, a few panes up you can see his shadowy figure going across a zip line.. but yeah, it’s like Doomsday type cameo appearance.
So Brubaker is right, first appearance is #1 but 1st Full Appearance isn’t until #6. No one knew who this shadowy figure was until #6.
FYI, the two issues I picked up at my LCBS for $5 each I just flipped for $45. Not bad, $10 for $45 is a good flip if you ask me. π
