Got an email question about what to buy, our regular reader Jo is looking for suggestions. Feel free to offer advice in the comment section.
From Jo:
My LCS, which I have been a patron of for almost 4 years, is purging its largely untouched inventory of the past 10 years. And so, from the UK and GeeksUnleashed, I come to you, the knowledgeable readers of ComicsHeatingUp, cap in hand and ask – what should I be looking for/buying?
Firstly for entertainment, secondly for speculation dollars.
All profits from sales will be spent at the store in question anything but my pull-list.

I would say anything guardians related, anything Rocket Raccoon related, and any Pre-100 walking dead. Loving Manifest Destiny, pick up any 1st print.
Thanks! They certainly had a copy of Annihilation: Conquest #6 (1st modern Guardians line-up?), however, it was VF+ at best.
There was a run of Abnett and Lanning’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2008), issues 5-25. I am hopeful the first issues of that series are around!
They have The Walking Dead from #67 onwards. I was thinking of buying complete arcs and listing, doubling up on keys such as issue 92 (first Jesus).
I really disliked the first issue of Manifest Destiny – is it worth another look?
My suggestions (all first prints): Saga #1-7, Guardians of the Galaxy (2008), Black Science, Manifest Destiny, Captain America (2005) early Winter Soldier appearances, amazing/superior Spider-Man variant covers featuring Venom. Happy hunting
Thanks Jay! I’d already picked Saga up from the LCS in question after it was sold out elsewhere. Unfortunately they store didn’t go big on it. However, did pick up a second print of #1.
See previous comment RE: Guardians.
Unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be any Captain America (volume 5) pre- #25 but am hopeful I can finish off my own run, which ended with #50.
Searching my long boxes last night, I realised I’ve never bough an on-going Spider-Man series (wasn’t interested in Superior) – are there any arcs of Amazing in particular I should snap up? Will certainly keep an eye out for variants, however, it’s a small store and so doubt it’ll have been ordering the high numbers of issues to secure them.
Yeah, can’t go wrong with anything Walking Dead, especially if it’s at a good price.
Look out for Volume 5 Captain America #1 and #6, first appearances of Winter Soldier is a good bet too.
death sentence for the pure cinematic mayhem of it, the kind that millar/quitely use to bring to the authority on the reg. really cant recommend it enough. then, manifest destiny and letter 44 are my next most favorite must-read-nows each month and the former looks to have no ceiling to it’s spec value as of yet. black science as well. been selling a lot of those lately
drew’s cap Amer. pick is good too, but id add #14 from vol. 5 to those he mentions. It contains the Winter Soldier origin story and is currently paper gold
Is Captain America (volume 5) #1 a speculator hit? I already have two NM copies of that!
yes indeed thats a hot book tho there is some disagreement as to whether #1 or #6 constitute the first appearance of winter soldier. some contend that #6 should be considered the 1st app and #1 a cameo
ASM 601, 606 and 607 are J. Scott Campbell covers and they sell well on ebay. Nowhere Men and East of West are great books that also sell well on ebay.
These J. Scott Campbell covers are amazing. I certainly be on the look out for those but to frame, rather than sell.
No Nowhere Men unfortunately. East of West is doing nothing in the UK, which is a shame, brilliant book!
Well as to speculation value….you need to look for the surprise….
If the general/majority of people who buy more then one issue of a comic believe a comic will be valuable before it comes out, they will buy many….depending on how early they are at ordering, it can raise the print run, regardless many people have the issues and ebay will be flooded…leading to disappointing pricing…So you need to find the rare, that is good…
For what to look for, check my ebay page; as I price things to move, and have most of the hottest things:
