Amazing Spider-man #1: To speculate or not to speculate?

It has been pretty well covered that Amazing Spider-man is going to be big. With a week left before the final order cut off, it remains to be seen how big.
Reports have come across that there have been half a million pre-orders for the book. There are also numerous variants and exclusives for the return of Peter Parker. The regular covers will not be worth anything, as there will be so many of them, and most of the variants will be priced out of the average flippers budgets.
One Variant has been getting a lot of coverage on the message boards and that is the J. Scott Campbell connecting covers. There are three connecting covers, TFAW has the Campbell variant connecting cover on sale for 20% off cover price. Pretty good deal and might be worth the pick up.

  1. This is a huge event so I decided I will take the gamble and really jump in. I have ordered 600 regular covers and a ton of variants so happy to work out deals with everyone in advance. I can also offer 20% off any of the comics but the cutoff for ordering any of ASM #1 is April 7th

  2. Batman #1 was the #1 most ordered comic when it came out at a high 188,420 copies and yet within 2 years even with a high print run was still a $50.00 book cause everyone needs to own a 1st Batman in their collection. While there is no guarantee this could happen with Spider-man #1 it does ask the question of whether copies eventually sell out that this book could actually have a back issue market in the future down the road as people will always need this book in their collection. Harley Quinn #1 had a fairly high print run and I stayed away from it due to this and sure enough within 4 months its selling for double cover.

    1. Just out of curiosity what was the print run of the last Amazing Spider-man #1. I still have copies of the sunburst Variant and the regular. Good luck with the 600 copies, but I know you will make your money off the variants.

  3. I’d really like to buy a ton of this book, but the image on the regular cover is really putting me off. The J. Scott Campbell variants maybe? Not really sure 🙁

  4. I’m probably gonna try and snag the Martín and Opeña variants. I’ll likely pick up the regular as well just to have but yeah, it’s just kind of cheesy.

  5. I was lucky enough to work a deal out with the owner of my LCS to get a whole variant set for less than the 1:300 is selling for now. As for the other variants, this is out of control! 29 covers? I have all but stopped buying all variant covers, save for AS. My downfall is that I am a Spider Man fan for life. I am going all in on the Midtown covers though. After what happened with the last transition it is kind of hard not to. But I guess we’ll see…

  6. You could get the blank cover so you don’t have to look at it! I think the j Scott Campbell midtown exclusive is probably the one to get

  7. So there are actually 2 different sets of JSC connecting covers. The regular versions (aka cover price) are SSM #31 + ASM #1. The midtown variants are SSM #31 + ASM #1 + ASM #1.1. And to top it off, midtown has a sketch variants of all three of their covers. I’m getting a few of the regular JSCs and 1 set of the midtown variants for my PC. The Ramos cover is garbage and won’t be worth the paper it’s printed on.
Oh, and I noticed that midtown had sold out of SSM #30, even at 1 per customer. Could we start seeing done heat on this issue soon?

    1. “Oh, and I noticed that midtown had sold out of SSM #30, even at 1 per customer. Could we start seeing done heat on this issue soon?”
Hopefully, I’m sitting on an extra 5 copies I picked up. But I still have two local shops with some remaining, so not terribly hard to get most likely.

    2. Spider-man is one if the biggest characters, popularity wise, in comic history. I am sure there will be heat on some of the rarer variants, for flipping this is awesom, for collecting and long term investment, not so good. There are already 1/2 a million copies ordered broken down between all the different variants and exclusives. I am not going crazy on this, just because of the money involved in getting them and the uncertainty of return. But, I am always cautious with my money.

      1. JSC is going to be at Denver comic Con, so I’m getting a set for him to sign. Not interested in going after all the variants our stocking up on anything.

      2. Oh I agree. With the amount of variants for ASM #1, I’m sticking to the two variant covers I just ordered and probably the cheesy looking regular cover for actually reading (well, pull the digital code to read on tablet)…
As for the SSM #30, I did pick up the extras in hopes of flipping some but even if they don’t heat up, $5 for each copy, I’m not breaking the bank if I can’t sell them.

  8. I just pre-ordered my Martín and Opeña covers.. I browsed as many as I could and those still topped my list of favorites. I did find it odd that Midtown doesn’t seem to have either listed for pre-order.. so TFAW.com got my business this round! 🙂

      1. TFAW.com seems to have the Martín and Opeña variants listed again. They also have the Campbell Connecting B Variant with an actual picture now as well.

      2. did the price change. i swear these were for cover price 2 weeks ago when i first saw. drew do you mind if i ask what price you paid for those martin and opena covers? I swear i saw them cheaper.

        1. Martin Variant $39.99
          McGuinness Variant $59.99
          Opena Variant $59.99
          Ross 75th Ann Variant $59.99
          Opena Sketch Variant $159.99
Not worth the risk for me to put out that much money and hope for a return.

      3. The prices posted now are the same I paid. I have not seen these priced any differently anywhere since they are like 1:50 type variants.

      4. Yeah, I bought the Martín and Opeña variants for personal collection, not to sell to make quick profit. 🙂

      5. Man I’m jealous drew, Those covers are just sweet and so well done….
I decided to get 3 ultra rare dodson cover, even thou they don’t drop until june 4th. I think black cat is so sexy and covers with her tend to do well.
I also picked up 3 of each; mahn variant, baby variant, blank, and cover b connection. All for cover.
Still on the fence to drop another 100$ for 2 books.

      6. Heh. I remember as a kid, I always wished I had more money when I collected comics. Now as an adult who collects, I can now collect with more money in pocket when I shop! 🙂

      7. Drew man, You should at least throw in a few blank cover variants to your order. At cover price you can’t really go wrong. I’ve seen some Covers that have been taken to conventions and sketched on sell for crazy prices, i’ve even seen blanks of popular series going for 3-5x above cover. Might end up helping pay some profits for those two nice books you hoarding 😉
GL buddy U post a lot so i thought i would shoot you some advice.

      8. Yeah, the blank variants and other variants that aren’t so hard to come by I’ll likely pick up at my local shop. I buy the others from TFAW or Midtown as they usually have the 15-20% already, my LCS don’t usually discount until they don’t sell.
As for the blank variants, the ones I do pick up I actually plan to do my own artwork on actually. It’s a hidden talent I don’t share often but most say I’m pretty good at drawing.
I’ve actually accumulated close to 15-20 of the Walking Dead #115 blank variants, I have some cool ideas for original sketches to possibly sell once complete.. 🙂

  9. Hastings is also going to have it’s own variant by Steve Epting. A classic looking cover that I might pick up.
