Comics Picks of the week for delivery 4/9/14

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. We sort through the listings and spotlight the ones we think have the best chance of heating up. Here are our picks for delivery 4/9/14.
The one featuring the Walking Dead:
Walking Dead #125– I know people are getting sick of seeing this on the list every two weeks. The good news is after the next issue, you will only need to see it on the list once a month. All Out War is ending, so we will get to see how this all plays out. I still think there is a lot of spec left in The Walking Dead. Plus, check out the solicit…

‘ALL OUT WAR,’ Part 11 The f*ck f*cking f*ckity f*cking penultimate chapter of All Out Motherf*cking War!

The new number 1 book from Image:
Shutter #1– I like Joe Keatinge. Got to meet him when he was writing Glory (great book). This has several things going for it, it is a new Image book and it features a variant by Brandon Graham.
The One Everyone is buying (or should be):
Manifest Destiny #6
Crazy cool book that keeps building an audience. There may well come a time where people are looking for these earlier issues.
The Small Press Gem:
Lumberjanes #1-It’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Gravity Falls and features five buttkicking, rad teenager girls wailing on monsters and solving a mystery with the whole world at stake. Also comes in a 1 in 15 variant and 1 in 25 variant. This will likely have a small print run and may be sought after by people who love the writers web comics.
That is for us. Do not forget to look out for 24 #1 and Dredd Underbelly #1 2nd print variant. These are both sold out and shooting their way up the charts already.

  1. I’m not sick of the Walking Dead being mentioned twice.. I think Kirkman should keep it up and make it a bi-monthly comic.. especially since the show is off the air until October, I can’t be bothered with updates to the story once a month.. I need more.. more I tell you.. 😛

      1. I must have all out war fatigue. Ready for them to move on in another direction. But like you guys said, love getting 2 walking dead books a month!

    1. #125 is awesome…
And don’t worry, All Out War is almost over.. #126 is apparently the clean up Negan’s blood issue.. 😉

  2. Manifest Destiny is one of my few I double up now on.. Walking Dead I double up.. I did do Thief of Thieves until it reached #12 (Then I dumped 1-12 for some nice profit)… now Manifest has joined the “I buy two copies” elite status..
I am bummed though, I picked up a #3 for rather cheap off eBay and it arrived all mangled up yesterday. Seller asked to return for refund.. sigh, that’s just money for nothing out of my pocket now! It looked like a nice NM+ issue too, he failed to package it securely one piece of cardboard and comic backs on the other side just doesn’t cut it in a world where USPS loves to bend and shove packages where they normally wouldn’t fit. If they write “Do Not Bend” on it, they always come how they should.

      1. The listing actually stated “Buyer pays return shipping if necessary” so can’t argue with that one. I’m not bummed about paying $2 to send back, I’m bummed the comic was literally destroyed.. it had to be a 8.0 or worse now from what appeared to be at least a 9.6 or higher.. The seller should write “Do Not Bend” if they continue to send in bubble padded envelopes with not enough cardboard. So they’re losing more than me, they got a comic that just lost most of it’s value. It’s getting harder to find MD #3 though for the $10 range… The only way I’ll leave neutral or negative is if the guy refuses to refund me.. that’s when I just contact eBay with Buyer Protection to get my money back. Buying on eBay, you always win. As a seller, I know their pain sometimes because there are some people who are too quick to leave negative feedback or gripe to get something for nothing.
I sold a RAID controller card about a month ago, the auction stated the cables were not included.. I got negative feedback from the buyer because he didn’t get cables with it. He never contacted me or asked me about them, he just left the feedback that is now permanent and doesn’t reflect the truth. Sigh!

      2. Hmm.. I’ll have to look further but still, sucks members can see on my feed back some douche telling them to “Avoid Seller” when it’s really him they should avoid since they clearly can’t read the item listing more clearly.

        1. I once (a long time ago) received a neutral feedback stating the way the books were packaged “almost caused them to be damaged” The books were in bags and boards, sealed, placed between card board and wrapped in plastic. No idea how they were “almost damaged” I responded back that they were not damaged and he had no basis for a neutral feedback.
I also do hate positive feed backs that say something like “what ever happened to the dog from the snausages commercial?” Which I currently have one of those. Tells nothing about how the book arrived minty fresh in two days.

      3. Yeah, I’ve already opened up a case to hopefully have it removed along with reporting the user as “abusive” since telling others to “avoid” me cause they failed to read the fine print is not cool.

  3. got 3 sets of 1-5 of Manifest Destiny going ..issue 3 was the hardest to come across for me when i was searching for back issues

    1. Exactly, it’s the lowest print run so far. Popularity drove issues 4 and 5 to go back up in print runs.. #2 was around 12800, #3 was close to 12000. #4 was 13k and #5 was 14k print run.. I can only imagine #6 is going to be 14k or 15k print run.

      1. I checked. #2 was my issue that I just plain forgot to pick up and have not tried. This is a book I pick up solely to flip. I’ll read the trade.

      2. Yup, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th (#1 only so far I think) prints all look the same and unless you really look closely, can overlook the “2nd Printing” or whichever it is in small lettering underneath the image logo. I thought I hit a few 1st prints #1 until I pulled them out and then noticed the “4th Printing” lettering.

  4. Black Science is another one to keep your eye on. I’ve noticed that issue #3 has become scarce online. It’s on a similar trajectory as manifest, just not rising nearly as fast. Keeps selling out, reprints keep on coming out. But the print run is about 10k higher and it’s not attached to sky bound.

  5. I haven’t read it yet but both people at my LCS raved about Shutter.. so I picked up 2 of the 4 covers..

      1. I actually opted for the Weaver and Rios covers. It was hard but those stood out to me. I do like all the covers though. If it’s good and I end up putting in on my permanent pull, I’ll likely go snag the other 2 covers.

  6. quick question.. I picked up Thaniel #1 on 3/26 i see its released on 4/9 is there any difference in these books ?

    1. I noticed my LCS had it as well, when they didn’t have it back on 3/26. I already previewed it, didn’t peek any interest from me.
