Amazing Spider-man #1 tops 700,000 copies ordered

Tomorrow sees the release of Amazing Spider-Man #1. Reports of sales estimates sees orders through the direct market of comic stores as topping 700,000 copies.
We’ve already published one article about how this large number was achieved through a mixture of incentive tiered covers and increased discounts. There may be some giveaways included in the price as well.
It’s a drop in the ocean but 6,000 copies of those came from Gamestop.
I understand that Marvel Comics encouraged the videogame store Gamestop to open a Diamond Comic Distributors account to order their copies of Amazing Spider-Man #1 for promotional purposes alongside the release of the Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game. Regular Gamestop customers can swap points they have earnt for a copy….
Worth it as well. Copies have already sold for up to $200 on eBay.

Time to readjust the number of variants that will be out there. 1 in 300 just became significantly less rare.

    1. The $5.99 price tag scares me away. I have a feeling you will be able to find copies on eBay cheap as people literally ordered hundreds of copies to get the rarer variants. Will hold off until I find dollar bin copies.

    2. The “overly happy” Pete regular cover really scared me in speccing on it. I even passed on the blank variants, knowing that it is still that horrible regular cover underneath it. anything else is just good I guess (especially if you have access to those sweet Ross|Opena 1:200 variants).

    1. Meanwhile this is a rare instance for one of the most popular superheros. In the 90s they were doing this with any idea they pooped out every book was burning up the press.
Population has increased since the 90s. Also comic book community has had a rebirth since walking dead, growing bigger than ever before. Who knows how long it will last but it has.
If you assume 310 million people in the USA alone only one fifth of a percent of the population will get a copy. Let alone a variant. Let alone the entire world population.

  1. Agreed. I think the heat will die down quickly just because of the print run. I bought one of the pop mhan variants to keep for myself just to say I have it. I like that one the best out of the regular covers. I’ve already sold all the other variants I ordered.

  2. I got 4 copies each of the DCBS regular and the sketch variant for cover price when they first offered them. A few days after I added them to my order DCBS changed it to $9.99 for their sketch variant. So at least my $5.99 sketch variants are already going for $9.99 before I get them. lol

      1. I also have the Mhan and the Scottie Young. I did get the regular cover even though it looks super lame because it was 50% off.

  3. I’m getting some JSC variants to take to Denver comic Con to get signed. That’s about it. And one midtown to have all the connecting covers in my PC.

      1. I still love old ASMs. Just picked up #12 last weekend. Not great condition, but so cool to hold and read a really old book like that.

      2. Totally agree! I am working on a complete run of #250 to 300 right now. The oldest ASM I have currently is #36. It’s in rough shape but yeah, It’s just cool having a 60’s spidey book like that.

  4. Blah.. usually my LCBS sells variants a little higher but this time they were selling the Opena and Martin for less than I pre-ordered online.. I got my crappy cover and a blank sketch variant.
All the others seemed to be damaged on the corners, said how they were all shipped. Anyone else notice this? I hit two stores and both had their variants in pretty bad shape, mostly corners were beat up.
If you can find these with sharp spine corners, good luck!

    1. I didn’t look at any variants yet, but I heard someone in line this morning complaining about it. A lot of the stores around my area are doing half off sales for Free Comic Book Day, so I’m going to look into variants then. I already have the Gamestop variant, so I’m anxious to see what kind of shape it arrives in.

      1. did you get a heads up on the gamestop variant?i missed out on the star wars and now the spiderman comic.i check my E-mail every day and saw nothing on either comic?

    2. Yup all the corners are pretty bad but I manage to pick a few out with the smallest rip without a fold and no creases in the spine easily min 9.6.. all over sized issues have bad spine corners (deadpool #27 – superior Spider-Man #30). I guess if you want to slab them and want a 9.8, you’ll have to go with PGX :p

      1. CGC and PGX are both a scam. For profit business.
9.2 used to be the standard when they started. Now they slowly creep up to 9.8 being standard, because why? They get more $$$$$ for higher graded that’s why.
No place left to go soon you will see a flood of 9.9 – 10

    3. Wow your local shop had them cheaper than 20% off? Hopefully at least your variants will show up in good shape since you ordered from TFAW. It’s super rare for me to get a bad looking book from them. 98% of the time the books from them come looking amazing. Perfect corners and no spine creases.
Unfortunately I have my shipping set up 1 time a month only. So my books for this week wont come until next week. Hopefully they already have some pristine ones for me already sitting in my box.

      1. They also have excellent customer service. The Walking Dead NYCC variant I ordered from them came in damaged, spine creases. I called, they refunded me, and let me keep the book. They said they were sold out, and could not offer a replacement. Oddly enough, they sent me one anyway.

      2. Yeah, I bought the Opena and Martin variants from TFAW for $39.99 and $59.99. My LCS was selling them for $29.99 and $49.99. Usually he doesn’t mark these types of variants that much off. Next time I’m gonna ask in advance on any variants I want if he’s gonna have super dooper deals!

  5. I think I got very lucky on a Alex Ross sketch variant. It’s extremely clean, should grade a 9.6 or 9.8. Although I did see many other of the lesser rare variants that had bad damage to the upper left hand corner or lower right hand corner. Very sad to see books so sought after to be bought in advance and show up damaged. Yet does squash the flood of variants and the decrease in value. Going to be very slim high graded books out of the ASM 1.

  6. I think it’s interesting that the Gamestop variant, which is limited to 6,000 is currently selling for $200+ online and the Hastings B&W variant which is limited to a mere 1,500 copies is selling for $30-$40. It must because of the artist or maybe cause the Gamestop one is harder to get? By the way, according to the current Hastings ad, the B&W variant will be $9.99 in store on FCBD Sat. so if you have one in your area, it might be worth looking into for a quick flip.

    1. Might be because you need a gamestop account with 6000 points in it. Who knows how many of the 6000 will be released. Maybe eventually all of them leaking onto the market from underground sources. Or maybe only 2k or so will get claimed and the rest will be burnt in a fire.
However so, Research says that gamestop ships poorly with no protection mediamail. So only a fraction of these will be graded good.
Its price range is selling in the 1:300 range which only have 2300 books printed.

  7. For anyone interested I have a sale on all Spider-man #1 covers. #1 regular cover only $1.50 per copy (cover is $5.99) / also the regular variants are at cover $5.99 each / 1:50 variant is $25.00 / 1:75 variants are $60.00 each

  8. has anybody seen/heard about the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 MINIMATES lego diamond retailer summit 2014 variant.the DRS stars may 17-19 in Las Vegas,pre-orders are on Ebay right now as little as $14 Free Shipping.i cant imagine there will be a lot of these made “maybe less than the Gamestop Exclusive” want ahead and ordered 4 copies.

    1. Yeah, I almost picked one up at my LCS but they had a stack of them as well. Probably not as rare as you think. In fact, there’s nothing rare about ASM #1.. these are so easy to get, Midtown still hasn’t even sold out on any of the covers they’re selling.

  9. The Lego variant is not as rare as I’d had hoped when I ordered mine. A shop in Houston had stacks of them on the day of the launch of ASM. This just a day after the summit. Speculated to be around 6000 in print yet I’ve yet to see that confirmed. It was my one pic to be of serious inflation other than the 1:300 sketch.

    1. In the long run I think the variants that went for cover will have the best upside potential. Especially the blank and young variant, possibly the mhan. Amazing Spider-Man isn’t the type of book that is resold over and over between collectors, while there might be that activity in the minority, the majority of ASM buyers is people who buy to collect. New collectors every day discovering ASM past and present. Eventually all of these copies will be put into more and more long boxes without the idea in the owners mind to sell anytime soon, but to keep for the long haul. Thus drying up the shares outstanding and shrinking the active float.
