THE DAKOIT WEEKLY SPECULATION HITLIST: MAY 6TH 2014

Here is the latest from our friend Dakoit at The Dakoit’s Book Speculation for Fun
Hey Gang,
FCBD was a blast. Waited for a hour to get into one shop, the owner claiming this year was insanity, last year no waits and this year a line-up that spanned up the stairs, into and around the shop! Crazy.
I did manage to grab everything that I wanted except Uber #0 and The Hip-Hop Anthology, due to limits. Although message boards were raving about the over-sized Street Fighter, in my area(s) it was Rocket Raccoon #1 saw heaviest demand. Two LCS were totally tapped out when I got in at 12pm. Kids just couldn’t seem to get enough of RR! In my observation, the second most sought out comic was probably the GoTG issue, and rounding out in 3rd place, was the Mouse Guard Hardcover, which IMO, was a totally remarkable FCBD giveaway.
Yes, some issues did spike on Ebay immediately after release, but have now dipped considerably. If you failed to grab some comics that you really wanted, don’t despair, in a week many of them will be flooded on Ebay with prices at a fraction of what they are now (plus shipping).
I’ve now listed the hottest books and current prices on EBay in my updated FCBD special post, just head to post #75, OR just clip and paste this link to your browser,

A lot of tv talk this last week, as SyFy had some major announcements, and I mean MAJOR. We will get to them below. Also, some highly anticipated horror titles make their debut from two different independent companies this week! Let’s start!
With literally hundreds of comic books hitting the LCS each week, it can be daunting task for a collector to decide which to buy. That’s where I come in! Scouring the web to bring you the most promising comics I see for investment, I give you my Dakoit Weekly Speculation Hit List! Enjoy!
1. Necromanical #1 (Ardden Entertainment), $3.99
Releasing: May 6th 2014
WHY? Virtually unknown creators, with a unique concept. Definitely written with a cinematic scope in mind. Think Minority Report with Robo Cop. This will be at a micro print run.
Synopsis: The next sci-fi phenomenon starts right here! In a near-future world where global pollution is killing humanity, only the wealthy can survive thanks to the transplant of artificial organs, leaving the other 99% to die slowly, painfully. Clive Sparks is a policeman in search of a missing young girl taken by a gang of organ traffickers. He also happens to be the first hybrid experiment of a human crossed with a robot, and he is looking for the truth at any cost. In a world on the edge of catastrophe, a half-artificial police man may just
be the only hope for the whole human race.(TFAW)
Necromantical #1
2. Woods #1 (BOOM! Studios), $ 3.99
Releasing: May 6th 2014
WHY? This will be one the most anticipated titles from the week, and its not from Image! This will have a horror feel just like Bunker, Revival, Sheltered. All of the former comics have done pretty well in the after market-could this be the next?
WHY WE LOVE IT: As fans of James Tynion IV’s work in the Batman universe (BATMAN ETERNAL, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS), we were eager to publish his first original comic series. Plus, THE WOODS gives us that same eerie, small-town horror feel we get whenever we read a Stephen King novel.
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: If you’re fan of teen conspiracy comics like MORNING GLORIES, SHELTERED, and REVIVAL, you’ll immediately be sucked into THE WOODS.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: On October 16, 2013, 437 students, 52 teachers, and 24 additional staff from Bay Point Preparatory High School in suburban Milwaukee, WI vanished without a trace. Countless light years away, far outside the bounds of the charted universe, 513 people find themselves in the middle of an ancient, primordial wilderness. Where are they? Why are they there? The answers will prove stranger than anyone could possibly imagine.(TFAW)
Woods #1
3. Epic #1 (Comixtribe), $3.99
Releasing: May 6th 2014
WHY? Right on the heels of FCBD preview comes the first issue. I don’t know too much about this comic, I didn’t actually grab this on Saturday, but worth a look at your LCS, and maybe pick up the free issue if any left over. This comic will have a low print run for sure.
Synopsis: Miami’s newest teenage superhero has a weakness for beautiful girls – literally! Hot on the heels of its world-wide Free Comic Book Day debut, your new favorite superhero action comedy begins its Epic ongoing series run! Witness the frightening origin of Epic’s first fearsome foe, the half-man/half-spider monstrosity Daddy Long Legs! See the scintillating first appearance of Scarewolf! Watch our hero whiff at his first attempt to woo the pretty new girl at school! All that and a foil-embossed cover, brought to you by writer Tyler James (The Red Ten) and rising-star artist Fico Ossio (Critter)!(TFAW)
Epic #1
4. Nailbiter (Image),
Releasing: May 6th 2014
WHY? This comic will be the most anticipated title of the week. Another horror title for fans this Wednesday. By Joshua Williamson who’s Ghosted is a best selling title at Image already. Heavily reviewed on websites.
http://comicsalliance.com/nailbiter-josh-williamson-interview-mike-henderson-image-comics-serial-killers/
Synopsis: JOSHUA WILLIAMSON (GHOSTED) & MIKE HENDERSON deliver a mystery that mixes Twin Peaks with the horror of Se7en! Buckaroo, Oregon has given birth to sixteen of the vilest serial killers in the world. An obsessed FBI profiler investigating the town has suddenly gone missing, and now an NSA Agent must work with the notorious serial killer Edward ‘Nailbiter’ Warren to find his friend and solve the mystery of ‘Where do serial killers come from?’
‘If Josh died I wish he’d leave Nailbiter to me in his will so I could say it was my idea.’ -Scott Snyder (SEVERED, Batman, American Vampire) (TFAW)
Nailbiter #1
PAST RELEASES:
5. Ronin #1 (DC), $2.50
Released: July 1983
WHY? SyFy will take a stab at comic master Frank Miller’s epic Japanese saga with a tv mini series. It has been attempted before in the 90’s, hopefully in materializes this time.

6. Pax Romana #1 (Image), $3.50

7. Clone #1 (Image), $2.99

8. Letter 44 #1 (Oni Press), $ 1.00
Released: October 2013
WHY: Charles Soule’s space thriller Letter 44 saw rumors of it being adapted for tv, shortly after being released last year. I also speculated on this comic last year, see post #34:
http://comicbookspeculation.blogspot.ca/2013/10/the-dakoit-weekly-speculation-hit-list_14.html
Syfy is committing to a series for this hot ongoing title. Issue #1 is now selling for $8.99 – $15.00 on Ebay.

VARIANT SECTION:
8. Shahrazad #5 J.Scott Campbell regular variant (BDI Publishing), $3.99
Releasing: May 6th 2014
WHY? J.Scott Campbell ‘female’ variants have been all the rage on ASM (I personally don’t get why, especially when there are far better female artists out there- Anacleto, Cho, Hughes) nevertheless, here is another one that may heat up. The Shahrazad series has enjoyed a variant cover by Campbell for every single issue, and this one features, not one, not two, but three (!) women with “come hither” poses on the cover! The other regular variants from issues 1-4 have appreciated a little on Ebay ($7-$13), Black and whites incentives always go for more ($23-$51). Go wild.

9. Chaos #1 of 6, J.Scott Campbell regular variant (Dynamite Entertainment), $3.99
WHY? Wow lookee here. Another one by the prodigious JSC, and also for a #1 issue! This is the only comic that has any redeeming quality for speculation in IMO, that’s why doesn’t make the list above. There are 4 other regular priced variant covers, or 5 incentive covers if the JSC cover below isn’t quite your cup of tea.
With Chaos 20th anniversary and Dynamite Entertainment’s 10th anniversary in 2014, the horror-heroes of the Chaos!
Universe return in an epic event! A shared vision of the Apocalypse sets the supernatural serial killer Evil Ernie, the blood goddess Purgatori, the vampire assassin Chastity and the outcast teen heroes of team known as The Chosen on a collision path with each other!
As claws, blood and blades fly, only one outcome is assured: Total CHAOS!
Chaos #1 (of 6) (Main Cover – Campbell)
In closing,
Necromanical#1 will be a comic that will fly under the radar, and may not ever get a second look. The story looks intriguing but, with unknown creators and an unrecognized publisher, are going against it’s success. Although if there is a chance it may heat up, but should be more a ‘flash in the pan’ than stay strong over time. I would grab 1 copy (maybe to read) or leave on shelves for now.
Woods #1 will be heavily anticipated, but I have a feeling teh market is beginning to get saturated with horror books. I would grab only 1-2 copies max, and hold off to see how fans react.
Epic #1 will be a comic that may appeal to a wide audience, but again it is from a smaller publisher and the premise isn’t very original IMO. I would leave on shelves, and rather grab the FCBD version to preview first before committing to speculation on this one.
Nailbiter #1 has seen heavily exposure on websites, and receiving good reviews. Although another horror title, it’s premise is unique and this comic may gain steam. I would still play it safe and grab 1-3 copies. You just don’t know about horror titles, fans may not keep coming back for the story month after month, attributing to diminished demand for the book. We’ll just have to wait an see.
Ronin#1 is still very cheap on Ebay in raw VF-NM condition. I really can’t figure out why after the news, but now may be the best time to grab one cheap! Prices right now $3.99- $20.00.
Pax Romana#1 may be a difficult comic to get. Back in 2007, Image was still trying to shed it’s ‘extreme/gritty/excess’ stereotype and this title was well under the radar back then, and likely printed in very low numbers. Only one copy right now on Ebay selling for 79.99 NM raw, and a 1-4 set on bidding (link to Ebay) :
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=Pax+Romana&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR1.TRC0.A0.H0.XPax+Romana+%231+&_nkw=Pax+Romana+%231+&_sacat=0
PR #1 will be your the hunt of the week. There should be some to be found in some unsuspecting LCS discount bins or back issue bins for a few bucks.
Clone #1 and Letter #44 are both recent releases, and I have speculated on these two comics quite heavily, so my readers should already be set! đŸ˜‰
For those of you who missed these, go to your LCS and ask for them. Some may have them for cover price (I would think more issues of Letter 44 would be found for cover) or a few bucks over. Grab them while they are cheap, as more news and images come out for their tv series, these will both hit higher values very soon.
As for the variants, JSC are all the rage nowadays, there is a market for them so if you can grab a copy or so, but not more. I’ve always warned about variants, they don’t hold value. That being said, there are JSC ‘completists’ and aficionados out there who grab everything JSC. It might be of benefit to you to grab a cover or two that YOU LIKE.
Until next week…

  1. Something else maybe worth mentioning for wrestling fans. Hot Topic’s website has a free variant WWE #1 comic offer when you buy any WWE merchandise online. The cover is the same as the CM Punk stained glass window shirt design by Jill Thompson. Stumbled on this by accident and i’ll be getting a few copies. Not sure if many people know of this.

  2. im selling an item on ebay that expires in a few hours. It has 2 bidders. One person is a new account just created today and bidding it up. How can I tell if this new account with no raiting is nefarious or not? And should i worry if this new account ends up winning?
Are they trying to bid it up to keep someone who really wants it from getting it? Before bidding started it had buyout option for 60$ and someone put 45$ to start. Then the new account came along and started bidup. Its to 70$ so i feel bad because buyout could have hit and it makes me feel this is a setup only to dump it on me. that is what it feels like set up for. Has anyone ever experienced this type of activity.
Sorry for putting this here i dont frequent many other forums except this site and i know most of you have selling experience.

    1. That I know of there is no way to tell. What you can do is set up bidding requirements that prevent zero feedback people from bidding. You could cancel their bids but then you will end up giving it away for the start price as it is just two bidders. Best case he is legit and pays. Worst he is a scammer pays and claims it’s damaged (ship priority with insurance) or if he doesn’t pay just file an unpaid buyer claim and get your fees back

      1. Thank you very much Anthony I knew I could count on you. And my signal probably went straight to your batphone.
You can delet the posts if you want.

        1. Yes straight to the bat phone was on my way to a poker game but had to respond. Guy hosting the game ended up having a good 80-90s collection by the way. Bringing home some great books to bring to market.

      2. wait. if he claims its damaged. Will he have to go through the insurance process? I’d Hope it would be on them.

        1. He could take the package and book to post office and file the claim himself. If it’s under $50 he will get cash there over $59 they send him a check. Either way the book has to be turned over to the post office.

      3. If it’s truly damaged during shipment, they have to send the item back to receive full refund. Then you can inspect if it’s damage likely done during shipment and or afterwards. Buy insurance if you must on the shipment, perhaps for the bidders who are new and have no history for prior judgement calls. Make sure they send back the original packaging as well if it comes to it. Everyone has to start at 0 feedback so likely it’s not a scammer, just someone new who usually doesn’t use ebay but really wants your item. đŸ˜‰

      4. The problem with selling on eBay is they protect the buyers more than the sellers. You are ultimately responsible and will be held liable in almost all cases unless you have good proof and evidence you did everything according to the book. The only time you really win is they don’t pay, they can lose rights to using eBay. I had to report a bidder who demanded I waived shipping costs or cancel the item, so I reported them. He ended up insulting me for 2 days. I simply replied to each saying “email reported as abuse, have a good day!” I’m assuming eBay finally took action cause it stopped abruptly.

  3. So even if i put no refund. And get insurance. If the books are really damaged. The buyer has to ship the books back to me, and then i go through the claim process. Ok. So the only reason someone would scam this way is if they wanted to replace their damaged books with better quality books bought. But they would try to keep costs cheap and wouldn’t like paying refund shipping.
I think it should be to the buyer to claim the insurance but what do i know im a pleb.
    Thanks for help everyone

    1. Well, eBay has this thing called eBay Protection, buy what you order or get your money back, guaranteed. The buyer would get their money back no matter. They can easily say it was received not as described, that’s why I never put an actual grade if my comics are raw. I generalize it by saying the comics are VF to NM, etc.
If the comics are returned, you would be issuing a refund and then it would be on you to go through the claim process if you bought insurance through the post office or other 3rd party, etc.
It doesn’t matter what you put in your auction listing description, eBay rules trump anything you say in there.

      1. Agreed. For new books I list them as “new and unread” a nm book in 9.2 could make someone angry if they are expecting a 9.8. For a lot of the variants I sell people want to have them graded. I always say I do not guarantee the grade cgc will come back with.
