A look ahead to December/January New Series

I love looking at books way in advance of release. It gives you the edge in looking for buzz on upcoming series. Here are some of the upcoming new series to keep an eye on.
Squirriors #1 12/10/14 Devil’s Due. Hit Kickstarter book comes to small press publisher. This will be sought after and hard to find.
Bitch Planet #1– 12/10/14, Kelly Sure Deconnick’s highly-anticipated women-in-prison sci-fi exploitation riff. Think Margaret Atwood meets Inglourious Basterds.
Lady Killers #1– 1/7/15, Dark Horse. Joelle Jones new series. Betty Draper meets Hannibal!
Josie Schuller is a picture-perfect homemaker, wife, and mother-but she’s also a ruthless, efficient killer for hire! A brand-new original comedy series that combines the wholesome imagery of early 1960s domestic bliss with a tightening web of murder, paranoia, and cold-blooded survival.
Burning Fields #1– 1/21/15, Boom. Tim Daniels new series. The team that brought you one of the bestreviewed comics of 2014 returns in 2015 to create a new horror tale unlike any other. A geopolitical drama with monster mythos, Burning Fields is a story for both fans of Zero Dark Thirty and The Thing, as the writers of Roche Limit and Enormous explore the evil that lurks when greed drives one to drill too deep into the unknown.
Dana Atkinson, a dishonorably discharged army investigator, is pulled back to the Middle East when a group of American oil technicians disappear under bizarre circumstances. With the help of an Iraqi investigator, what Dana discovers is unimaginable: a series of unusual incidents at the drill site lead her and her unlikely ally to discover a mythic evil that has been released, one that threatens both the lives of the entire region and the fragile peace that exists.
Class Action #1– 1/28/14 Ardden Ent. Loving the classic style art on this one from Neil Adams. Will appeal to classic comic fans. From the mind of comic book industry legend Neal Adams! Sarah and Jon are happy, wildly in love, and engaged to be married. However, what Sarah doesn’t know is that Jon is the world’s foremost super villain, recently pardoned by the government, but for reasons unknown. And now, Jon’s secrets are about to come crashing down around both of them! Jump on this hot new series with the action-packed debut issue!
Effigy #1– 1/28/14, DC Comics. After a sex-tape scandal, former Hollywood child star turned Z-lister Chondra Jackson returns to her hometown of Effigy Mound, IL, to find a seemingly impossible crime – a fresh corpse in an ancient Indian burial site. Even weirder, the murder resembles a scene from an episode of her old TV show, Star Cop, a live-action children’s show about a kid detective.
As Chondra starts to investigate, she stumbles upon a bizarre cult that worships celebrities as eternal effigies. And these cult members aren’t just worshiping – they’re also ritually sacrificing anyone who defies their veneration of the beautiful and famous.
Chondra’s probe takes her on a terrifying tour of burial mounds across the world, from Stonehenge to the Nazca Lines of Peru. But what is the link between the cult, Chondra’s hometown, and her own bloodline? Will Chondra become the hero detective she played as a child…or is she in fact the cult’s unwitting messiah?
Written by rising star Tim Seeley (BATMAN ETERNAL, GRAYSON, Revival) and illustrated by Marley Zarcone (Black Circle, MADAME XANADU), EFFIGY is a twisted murder mystery and conspiracy tale that examines celebrity, godhood, and the price of fame.
Mortal Kombat X #1– 1/7/14, DC Comics. This is a big one for me. Mortal Kombat is one of the few games I have had a copy of every incarnation of. I am sure I am not the only one, as fans of the series are legion. Game crossover comics have been big in the past year.
Get over here…for an all-new digital-first series set before the events of 2015’s highly anticipated game Mortal Kombat X! Prepare yourself for the brutal adventures of all your favorite Mortal Kombat characters and witness the rise of the next generation of Kombatants! This premiere issue features two interlocking covers by superstar artist Ivan Reis!
Munchkin #1– 1/7/14, Boom. The fan favorite card game comes to comics, surprised this took so long.
Kick open the door. Kill the monster. Steal the treasure. Screw over everybody you come in contact with. Welcome to the world of Munchkin, a gathering of stories based on the popular game series. It’s a laugh a minute, pal. Plus, every first printing of every issue will ship with an exclusive card for the game.
Based on the immensely popular card game, Munchkin comes to comics! Munchkin takes place in a very flexible mashup of genres. Originally a satire of fantasy roleplaying, it has since then taken on nonfantasy and nongaming elements. Characters in Munchkin change constantly but never permanently.
What do Munchkins do? They play for the win. They are rules lawyers. They backstab. They gloat. They whine when someone else backstabs or gloats. Munchkins are emotional. Munchkins may be clever, but they are never wise. Munchkins have short attention spans. Munchkins may be brave in the face of awful odds, but they are even braver when beating up crippled goblins for their lunch money. If a Munchkin seems to show mercy, it’s because he was bored or distracted. After all, even stomping an ant helps you level up.
Rumble #1– 12/17/14, Image Comics. Awesome looking series.
Okay, so a scarecrow walks into a bar…and proceeds to wreak havoc across two worlds! After a long absence, Rathraq, Scarecrow Warrior God, is back-and very unhappy. Bad news for his old enemies, yes, but worse news for everybody else! JOHN ARCUDI and JAMES HARREN bring you a modern day action/adventure fantasy thriller where rundown dive bars, undead kitty cats, psycho skinheads, and giant mummies all play a part. It’s Louis C.K. meets Robert E. Howard in a David Fincher universe
Secret Six #1 12/3/14, Dc Comics. Gail Simone is back with the NEW 52 debut of the fan-favorite team – THE SECRET SIX! Six strangers are brought together under mysterious circumstances for an explosive first issue that will leave everyone asking, ‘What is the Secret?’
Thanos vs. Hulk #1– 12/3/14, Marvel. Jim Starling doing Thanos and the Hulk. Nuff said.
Wolf Moon #1– 12/4/14, Vertigo. Cullen Bunn’s new series. Don’t miss the start of this new 6-issue miniseries! WOLF MOON is a horrific werewolf hunt unlike any other. When Dillon Chase’s family was slaughtered by the wolf, his life was forever changed. Dillon sets out to destroy the creature, but he soon learns that lycanthropy is far more insidious than the legends ever said. With each full moon, he draws closer to the monster – and with each full moon, he becomes more aware that in order to stop the wolf, he must kill a human being and become a fearful monster himself.

  1. What about Squarriors from Devils Due ? I think that’s a December release. It’s Mouse Guard with lots of blood and amazing art.
