Variant Envy: Joker Month

Most of DC’s monthly themed variants have been passes for me. Selfie month, no thanks. Harley month, ehh… Movie posters, pass. But this one features a couple I wouldn’t mind grabbing, JOKER MONTH.

There will be a total of 25 different Joker variants in time for The Joker’s 75 birthday. They will ship June 2015.

  1. Lee, Bolland and Jock are definites so far, and maybe the Oliver one. Hope they can break out the big guns of Miller, Adams and Sienkiewicz.
I haven’t been floored by their variant themes either. I only got a few of the Bombshells that I thought were nice and the Catwoman Monsters one which was just plain killer

    1. Did you see the batgirl #41 one? Killing joke reference. That is the best one in my opinion but the jock one is excellent as well

      1. @ Anothony
I agree. Would be the logical choice. But Alberquerque has done an amazing job. Just hope the people of this world with sticks up their asses don’t go nuts on this like some recent past covers. Bleeding Cool , the junk of a site that it is, already has an article posted about how inappropriate the joker cover is.

  2. Are these available now? If they aren’t, anyone when/where they can be ordered/pre-ordered? Some of these are must haves!

  3. You can order them threw previews threw your LCS. That’s the way I did it. Or if you don’t have a LCS then ebay I would say

      1. same with Midtown. in fact, they have previews in which you can pre-order the books. Just be aware of the cutoff date.

  4. The cover for Batgirl is one that caught my attention the most. It made me wanna read “the killing joke” just by looking at the cover.

    1. I don’t get it, how is the cover inappropriate? By even asking such a question, your basically saying the Joker himself is inappropriate. It’s a comic, it’s for entertainment, the Joker is a sadist, saying the cover is inappropriate is like saying we should just do away with the Joker entirely, shame on DC for creating such a monster.
The cover is exactly how one would portray such a madman.. I guess I’m out of touch, I don’t read CBR that often but this Rich guy needs to put his man panties on for sure..

      1. I actually still have my Killing Joke. It’s a 3rd print but it was always a keeper. It was one of the few comics I saved (just a handful that is) when I stopped collecting in the early 90s, got rid of my comics and so on..

    2. Ok I read the article and saw the picture but don’t see why the cover is so bad. It is not lurid in any sense, just shows the current bat-girl dealing reacting to the Joker with a gun in much the same way I would (crying) if I had a crazed clown with a gun holding me.

      1. Never read the Killing Joke? I’ve curated original artwork from the Killing Joke.
Imagine The Killing Joke with a cover from L’il Gotham and a splash reading “Hey Kids!” Comics!” – would that be an appropriate cover for The Killing Joke?

        1. Hi Rich and thanks for joining the chat. I would think that would not be an appropriate cover to the Killing Joke, no, but we are not talking L’il Gotham either. We are talking a Bat Book that has already had content that some parents might label as questionable. Killing Joke was not targeted at kids. L’il Gotham is. Batgirl is targeted at Teens and up. This cover would be more towards a grown up collector. Now would it be appropriate for L’il Gotham to have a Killing Joke cover that would be another story. Anyway cheers.

      2. I’ll have to back up Anthony here, we’re not talking about L’il Gotham. Your gonna have to come up with some better argument me thinks. 😉

  5. Just saw the Sienkiewicz Joker cover for Green Arrow and it’s sweet! The legends are really knocking it outta the park on some of these! I don’t see a Neal Adams variant which is surprising seeing as how he redefined The Joker in the 1970s. I’ve heard that Miller’s health is pretty bad which is a shame and probably why he isn’t represented?

  6. The other one that I saw that I thought could of been done better is the Harley Quinn one. I mean the joker and her had a thing and when you think of one you think of the other and to just put a cover with no action on it, its just lame, lame, lame!!! They could of done something way better. I know I would if I worked for DC lol

  7. Please do not give this any legs.
We all know Bleeding Cool is 99% filler garbage with zero substance just to keep the steady flow of thrash posts going.
Only a pompous nit would come here just to justify by sayin they have curated the art of Killing Joke. Clear your thick head from all that arrogance.
Before you know it you’ll be tryin to kill off Harley Quinn because she started out in a cartoon and a comic FOR KIDS!

    1. Play nice please. Yes, Harley has become something more then she started out as, her costume has become more and more revealing over time, she has become psychotic when before she love struck and a little silly.

  8. Oliver, Jock, and Lee covers are really cool, considering picking them up.
As for the Batigrl cover I like it its an incentive cover and does fall into the higher end of the Batgirl reader demographic, and in this instance Rich on bleeding cool did okay in my book. He presented the argument showing thoughtful and dumb tweets from each side of the debate, and also just voiced his opinion.
The various articles on the site about the Manara Spider-Woman were skewed though and felt like it was being “reported” about from a very biased lens, especially with the 5+ articles that were on the website relating to it. I personally did not like the Manara cover but at the same time had no problem with it, twas a 1:50 incentive after all.
What bothers me is how internet mob mentality is beginning to effect what is produced. There are times when it is constructive and shuts down or stops things in various forms of media that are simply created to further hatred or sexism or inequality.
But more often than not people will attack a cover or image until it is removed or toned down to the point of censorship via mob vote. Maybe years from now we’ll end up with content, art, and stores all around us that is approved by some committee to give us just a little bit to think or feel about without coming on to be too strong or leaving a lasting impression so it won’t effect our delicate unanimous-worldwide opinions and sensibilities or start a free thought movement 😛

      1. Just checked bleedingcool, I thought the hashtag article was the only one he wrote about it. So in light of reading the origninal he loses points objectivity since the first one is formatted as a mini persuasive essay.. The second one does seem to be an improvement though, hopefully we don’t have 10 articles about the “how wrong” the cover is for the book (fingers crossed).

  9. Well the censors got their wish and the cover got pulled. I’m sure Rich and his friends at BC are thrilled, they can high five each other until their next crusade against art. I’m only buying the Jock cover now instead of my planned list, and even then it will leave a bad taste in my mouth
