Did Funko or GameStop Rip-Off Funko Fans on Black Friday?

I had posted my Funko/GameStop Mystery Box unopening Video from Black Friday. One of my complaints was I bought 5 boxes to give to my son Joe and of that, four were Batgirls. Being the flipper by nature that I am, I sold two of them to pay for replacement Pops for the boxes (and kept one for myself). Needless to say I was not the only person who ran into this problem.

Here is my original video where I complained about the duplications.

Here is a video that goes more in depth into the problem.

Thanks to Mel V. for bringing it to my attention.

  1. Lol. I overslept on Friday ( thankfully) but my bud showed up to GS when they opened. He said boxes on the floor with all of them having creases and light bend like someone had been searching them. Scared him away and he didn’t buy any. Nice to have confirmation funny business was going on.

  2. The store that we went to had theirs behind the counter and you could pick wichever one u wanted. I think they where tampered with or wrong numbers cuz the store where my wife got the gold batgirl, someone else got a fallout pilot and that was it from that store. So out of the 40 that they got, 2 where gold.

  3. Gamestop employees were peeking inside for sure. I know a friend of mine went to a gamestop, where he knew the manager, and got handed a box with a gold figure in it. But pops is an addiction all onto itself, and I’m glad I never got into it.

  4. I hadn’t really been following this story. I saw your unboxing and thought you had simply gotten unlucky. Makes me wonder if they were grouped (by pop) in a warehouse and then trucks were loaded from each group instead of randomly being distributed.

I’m glad I skipped this fiasco.

  5. Instead of spending the $20 or even more on the “mystery” boxes to get the gold Funko…i’d rather use that money and just by one on Ebay.

    1. The gold ones are going for $100 and up. And it wasn’t just about getting a gold one. I bought them for my son to give to him throughout the year as there really aren’t any kids subscription boxes.

      1. I hear you on that one, I wish there was a kids one. If Loot Crate keeps it up, I’ll be dropping them (I’ve signed up for Star Wars Smugglers Bounty) and if I drop Loot, I’ll likely sign up for the Marvel Corps.

      2. Anthony, little off topic but my son is 6 and loves the 1up box. T shirt every month and seems geared toward his age range. May want to look at some vids to see if he’d enjoy. The smallest shirts are a little big on him still but he’s got them ready for a growth spurt!

  6. At my Game stop ALL the boxes had clearly visible bends from being looked into. When I asked the employee about it, he said “they came that way”. I immediately demanded a refund and returned my unopened box right there. I kind of anticipated there was the potential for whole stores to just all end up with the same thing. Its a Blindbox, and after the HILARIOUS prank Skybound played on us all last year, I set my expectations pretty low for this year’s ‘bargain box’. What I wasn’t cool with was box tampering to remove any chance at the coveted Golden Pop. I’ve never been huge on Gamestop fan, their sales staff is pushy, their trade values are terrible, and some of the people they hire don’t look (or smell) like they know what soap is. After the Black Friday debacle I’m done with them.

  7. If you plan to spend $100+ on mystery boxes to ensure you get the one harder to find item, you might as well just save yourself the headache and use that money to buy the item on the secondary product for probably less than your willing to spend on all the boxes.

      1. Yeah, I mean, if you know you can sell all the extra crap you get and don’t want, go for it. But if you don’t want to end up with a bunch of stuff with the hassle of selling, save some money, buy the one item for half or a 1/4 of the price.

  8. Where there’s easy money there’s scams or scandals, a young guy working in a shop ( with xmas around the corner ) only has to peek into some boxes and find 5 gold’s then put them aside for himself and he’s up $400+ .. guaranteed with poor packaging design like that

  9. You know I saw a listing of someone selling then in the morning on black friday. I was all like how the hell did he get them so fast? Crazy crazy

      1. Sorry, wasn’t the whole point of this post to complain about getting doubles and how surprised you were about it during the video you posted? Getting some mixed messages here.

        1. How so? What part is confusing to you that I said that I was interested in getting one from another location to see how I would do. There is two parts to the scam. One was that they were not properly mixed throughout the stores. If I went to another store I may get a different pop. The other part is there were no side flaps so people could peek. If you don’t care that you are getting a gold pop and still anted one of the exclusives then it is no big deal. Or were you confused that I flipped the pops inside. Please let me know what was confusing to you.

  10. I bought two for fun and within them got some ReAction figures I had little interest in, but a cool 1989 Batman Funko and a Blackest Night Superman, so I was pretty happy. I will admit I thought it would be extra-cool to get a gold one, but hearing all this I wonder if it would have even been possible…

  11. Honestly, the only ones to truly blame though is Funko, for piss poor packaging and not sealing them to the point where no one can peek and it’s obvious if it’s been tampered with. And shame on the employees if they were the ones tampering and peek themselves before they were sold.
