Early Warning: Tephlon Funk

I am not usually into manga or anime. It is just not my thing. I do know it is huge and there is a large fan base for it. Here is something to be on the look for an consider. The comic is called Tephlon Funk.

Tephlon Funk was a Kickstarter started by Stephane Metayer, David Tako, and Nicholas Safe, to fund a 130 page graphic novel. They were looking to raise $15,000. They raised over $22,000 for the project.

It’s an incredible story about a troubled teenage girl who runs into someone that changes her life forever. The events that take place not only changes her outlook on life but also gives her the inner strength she never knew she had.

The main protagonist is 14 year old Inez Jozlyn. She was born and raised out in Queensbridge, a rough housing project in the New York City borough of Queens. The title “Tephlon Funk!” means in order to overcome obstacles in life, you need to be strong and stand out among the crowd.

The Kickstarter hit it’s funding goal and went into stretch goals. With the additional funds they were looking to start an animated series based off the book. The team has already met with two studios that have expressed an interest in making the animated series and animating the pilot for the show.

Gonzo Animation from Tokyo, Japan and JM Animation, from Seoul, South Korea. Gonzo is best known for their work on “Afro Samurai” and “Bayonetta: Bloody Fate.” JM is best known for their work on “The Boondocks” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender”

So here is where the speculation comes in. The team has self published a 24 page teaser “Demo Tape” for the book. It can be found here, for $5. If this does get animated and makes it to the air, this is the type of book that could shoot up in the secondary market.

You can learn all about Tephlon Funk at their website.

  1. Fell in love with this the 1st time I seen it ..get ya orders in early for “The Demo” as I predict HUGE things from this book a year from now

  2. I read it and it was REALLY good… But when I learned that they only printed 100 of these….Well I just bought 15… so now I have 15 % of the print run… lol, I am either an idiot or a genius, only time will tell… but seeing all the articles popping up…. makes me feel like this is a good bet..

  3. The issue is available to read on their website for free…. Those that missed out on this run, they are doing another printing, and limiting those to 150. I would suggest you contact them to get a few early. I talked to them about their shipping ( 4 or more will get a box with bubble wrap ) and the 2nd printing will be distinguishable from the first printing…

  4. I purchased two earlier this week and they arrived today (Dec. 5) in perfect condition, even though they were shipped in a small bubble envelope without any cardboard backing, etc.
