Secret Wars the Story So Far

Is this still going on? Leave it to Marvel to relaunch their Universe before finishing the story that got them there.

  1. Well, we all know Peter Parker made it.. along with Dr. Strange, most of the Avengers, Spider-Gwen, Silk, etc.. it is kind of silly this is ending now while the reboots started occurring a few months ago. Maybe Mr. Fantastic and Sue die.. haven’t seen any hints at them in any of the reboots. We’ve seen Thing and Human Torch. We know Doom survives though.. he’s in Iron Man.

    1. Human Torch has mentioned that Mr. Fantastic died, but it’s not clear whether it happened in Secret Wars, or during the 8-month gap. I haven’t seen any mention of Sue yet, though. I would think if she had died, Johnny would be more likely to mention his sister dying, than to have only commented about Reed so far.
I’m not a fan of Hickman to begin with, and I actually enjoyed the tie-ins more than the central Secret Wars mini-series. I wasn’t expecting anything world-altering from it. And so far in the new books it looks like only a few changes were made, which are likely easily explained… and a few things swept under the “8 month” rug, never to actually be addressed.

      1. I either love Hickman or I’m like…. meh. East of West is awesome, Dying and the Dead is awesome (needs to come back already from his hiatus), Manhattan Projects is awesome….. I did enjoy his last Avengers series leading up to Secret Wars.

  2. A close friend who also happens to own a comic shop swears the delays and extra issue added were done because they saw that the pre-sales of the “ALL NEW, ALL EXCITING” comics were bunk, in order to give Marvel some non-Star Wars sales.
Either way, I think they’ve shot themselves in the foot. As a casual Marvel reader (which in of itself is telling because for the majority of my comic buying years I was Team Marvel), I was enjoying the first half of Secret Wars, even tho it could be confusing at times (I had just got back into comics after a long absence so I was in the dark about much of what was going on). Once the delays started, and I saw that in the end it really didn’t matter what happened in SW since all of the new books launched and as mentioned above we pretty much know what happened to most characters, I started to lose interest. Plus all the other series proved to be pointless page filler (looking at you Future Imperfect), so now I pretty much don’t care. I’ll pick up 9, but won’t be in any rush to do so.
p.s. BUT, that Doom/Thanos “fight” was pretty friggin awesome.

    1. To my knowledge though (this new Battleworld was just fillers for sure), Marvel let the writers and artists have free reign over the stories. There were some good ones and some really dumb ones. I just caught up recently on most that I purchased over the summer so even with the delays of Secret Wars, since I delayed reading most of them and the new reboots, didn’t really affect me.

      1. I also felt like the tie-ins had some really unique & engaging stories. A lot of people compare it to copying DC’s “Conversion” tie-ins, but the quality was much better, in my opinion. I only read maybe a dozen of the Conversion 2-issue “mini-series” and couldn’t believe how repetitive they were. Especially the first issues; it was like reading many separate versions of the same status quo being set up over & over again in each book. With the Secret Wars tie-ins, I’m actually hoping they revisit some of those concepts in future mini-series’. What they really need is a new reality-hopping book, similar to Exiles, where they can visit alternate universes on a regular basis, without making it seem like a sequel or cash-grab; it just becomes part of the basis of the book, and meanwhile lures in casual readers who happen to favor certain characters or timelines featured.

      2. The fact that we got Weirdeorld out of Battleworld is kind of worth it in its self. Old Man Logan was a money grab–basically a senior mutant stumbling all over the planet. ASMRYV was really good, but mostly because it was a self-contained spider story with a big bad. Armor wars was bad enough to make me angry. MODOK was a f&$kin’ HOOT and a holler! Real fun. Maybe not a whole lot of substance, though.
All in all, I think Marvel was shopping ideas on the market.

        1. Weirdworld was great I thought as well, probably my favorite. Most of the X-Men titles I didn’t even bother with along with Spider-Verse. Spiderman Renew Vows was okay to me, wasn’t horrible though. Future Imperfect was okay. Planet Hulk I enjoyed. I didn’t even bother with Old Man Logan, I’m Wolverined out.. I have picked up the new reboot and hope it’s not bad. Infinity Gauntlet wasn’t bad. 2099 was okay. Armor Wars was just kind of silly, not bad but I didn’t really love or hate it.

      3. If you want a reality-hopping book, try The Ultimates by Al Ewing. It’s so good and I think issue four is gearing up to be what you want.

  3. I used to “make mine Marvel” but not so much anymore. Most of the movies are very good but the comics these days, not so much as far as I’m concerned. Maybe I’ll start again after the next reboot. Thank goodness there are tons of back issues from the glory days of Marvel that can still be purchased cheap.
