Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 70th edition of the open forum!
Big Shout out to Nicc T (don’t you dare call him Nick, Jim Lee I am looking at you!) for the huge care package he sent me full of comics!

Anyone catch Lucifer on Fox last night? Sitting here watching it on DVR now. First two minutes in not so bad.
What are your pick ups?
What about back issue raids?
What was sold out at your store?
What was sitting one the shelves in piles?
Or anything else you want to talk about, here is where to do it!

  1. Small week for me so I’m going to explor some new stuff and catch up on things dropped from the pull.
    Pulls:
James Bond #4: Ellis is crushing this. Very visceral Bond. None of the glitzy leading men of the past few Bond film decades.
Ninjak #12: want to get my hands on that Shadowman design variant. Loving the new Shadowman design. Plus, this series is just stupid good. Better than it deserves to be.
Old Man Logan #2: Lemire set up a solid premise in issue 1. Old Man Logan is one of the few Secret Wars characters with solid continuity bridging the gap between SW and ANAD. Hulk v Wolverine once again!? Bring it on!
Silk #4: on another note, I found an ASM 4 (first Silk appearance) in a dollar bin the other day. I’ll buy that for a dollar!
Darth Vader #16: new arc. No variants. Buying 3x for my personal Star Wars obsession.
Autumn lands #9: underrated and overlooked, just like the Astro City issues 1-25 I found in a 25 cent bin this weekend.
The Ultimates #4: this is what we all thought we were getting with ANAD. It’s in this book.
Weirdeorld #3: Del Mundo’s art is carrying this book. Hopefully the story ends up doing it justice.
Other than that I’m going to spec on cover price Batman 49 Neal Adams covers.
I’m going to catch up on Harrow County back issues and maybe pick up Spread 13!
    Like one more xmas tomorrow!

  2. Small week. Silk 4, and Batman Superman 29 Adams variant. I really like this one, and I have been excited since I saw the cover preview.

  3. Right on Tony. This is going to be an interesting week. There’s new books in the dollar bin and I’m going for some serious diving. I’ve found quite a few EC Classic reprints for dirt cheap in amazing condition. Next week will be my big week!

  4. This week’s picks are;
Batman 49 ( both regular and Neal Adams covers)
Harley’s little black book #2 ( for the wife and will be looking for the Timms variant thanks for pointing it out Mel.)
Lantern City #10 ( 2 more books till the series is over ?)
Silk #4 ( for the wife)
Spread #13 ( haven’t read it since issue 9 and since everyone is talking about issue 12 I need to make some time catch up)
Starfire #9 ( for the wife)
Also a quick shout out to Mel V. THANKS FOR THE AWESOME BOOKS. I own you one….

  5. I have a long list this week. I may get around to posting what I actually pick up tomorrow. But I DID find all six issues of the Legends mini series for $4.00 tonight at Half Price Books. So there’s that.

  6. interceptor # 2
    descender # 10
    all-new all-different avengers # 5 (cho variant cover)
    darth vader # 16
    ms. marvel # 4
    jonesy # 1

  7. This weeks pick ups……
Escape from monster island #1 boba fett variant… Lots to gush about on this book, but there’s already a chu article on it. So let me add just a few things this book is limited to 350copies (well 342 because I have 8 coming) bought two and the seller messaged me if I wanted more so I bought all he had. He said he could get a few more if needed, that they had only realesed 250 of the 350 copies and were holding 100 copies in the vault for special customers and he maybe could get two more. So this book is even more limited then once thought since only 250/350 copies will be circulating at first. Female Boba Fett is an extremely popular cosplay with 100s of female Boba Fett cosplayers, more importantly there has always been the rumors that Fett is really a woman (the unaltered clone)and this is revealed when she crawls out of the sarlacc wiearing only her helmet as her armor and clothes were digested. Whether you believe in old star wars rumors or not still an amazing cover to have.
Descender #1 bam variant movie speculation and been working on expanding my collecting beyond Marvel/Dc.
Shadowman #1 1992 same as above
Archer and Armstrong #0 1992 same as above
Alias #1 already have it one came up on eBay cheap will flip it out when season 2 hits.

  8. 1. all new all different avengers 5 – should I be reading the vision? cause I am very intrigued by him in this series.
    2. all new wolverine 5 – meh. the clones are kind of annoying.
    3. deadpool 7 ….ehhhhhhh maybe. deadpool is on my pull list. but I really do find a $10 cover price for a regular, ongoing issue absurd. theres no way itll ever be worth anything. and it probably wont even be necessary to understand whats going on in issue 8. im leaning towards handing this one back.
    4. Guardians of the galaxy 5 – there is really nothing going on this series. just senseless fighting against big strong boring villains. and this goes back to the guardians of knowhere series too. I love bendis and the last volume, but if this comic doesn’t start going somewhere, it may be dropped.
    5. totally awesome hulk 3 – hope frank cho sticks around for a while, but I think he may already be done by the next issue.
    6. batman 49 – this has been yet another great story arc by snyder
    7. descender 10 – I moved into a new apartment and am trying to decorate. I would love to frame and hang up some blown up pages from this book. art is just stunning. same applies for low.
    8. low 11 – the ultimate slow burn comic. but totally worth it
    9. spread 13 – last issue….wow….just wow…..

  9. Definite pickups:
    Low
    Spread
    Invader Zim
    Maybe:
Deadpool 7 (I may wait for it to go on sale at a discount since so many copies will be printed)
Jonesy (if I can find the O’Malley cover only)
    Recent back issues:
Weird Mystery Tales 18 (1st appearance of Lucien the Librarian from Sandman in an ad for Tales of Ghost Castle 1) to go with the CGC 9.6 Tales of Ghost Castle 1 I picked up earlier.
    Notes:
    1) I’ve been looking to get a CGC 9.8 Simon Bisley ss Lobo 1 for my pc and cannot understand the discrepancy in price between a ss 9.8 and a non-ss 9.8. The past few non-ss 9.8 sales I’ve watched ended between $60-75. The last ss (signature only, no sketch) I was watching ended up at $168. A $100 difference for just a signature? Based on the date of the signing, the signings have been fairly recent too.
    2) I just got an email from CBCS about the grades for three books I submitted last September. It is taking a little longer because I did not fast pass them and got them pressed first. I sent in two copies of Batman Adventures 12 and one copy of The Crow 3rd printing.
    A) Good news first: one BA12 is coming back as a 9.6, the other a 9.8. Not bad for a $1 bin pull at a small con and a $6 back issue bin pull at my lcs.
    B) Even though a CBCS representative instructed me how to fill out the submission form and which tiers to submit, I received a call from CBCS requesting more money to grade my books because the increased value bumped my two BA12’s into a different tier. Bad practice since the CBCS rep basically filled out my initial invoice.
    C) More bad news for CBCS: The third book I send in was a third printing of The Crow 1 I wanted to slab just for the cover. It is coming back as a 9.4. The bad part of this is that I listed it as a 3rd printing on the invoice I sent to CBCS, but nowhere in the final grading notes or online invoice from CBCS does it list the fact that it is a third printing. I, being the honest person I am, called CBCS and informed them of this issue. I was told that they would look into it since, yes, it did not state third printing anywhere the representative or I could see. Since I have not seen the actual slabbed book, maybe I should give CBCS the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it lists it on the label. But I would think it would show that in the grading notes which are supposed to provide information about the book that cannot be seen without opening up the book. Or show it somewhere on the invoice. More likely than not, they missed the fact that it was a third printing even though I listed it as such on the invoice I sent in. Scary stuff, if they missed it.

    1. Who did you pressing? Is CBCS offering pressing?
I always fast pass my CBCS books. For example books I submitted at NYCC fast Pass came back the first week in December. The ones that I did not fast pass are just now coming back.
      >

      1. I used the CBCS recommended presser. The CBCS representative took the books to their approved presser although he is not affiliated with CBCS. I haven’t seen the encapsulated books yet, but I was expecting lower grades than 9.8 and a 9.6. I’m glad I had them pressed. It was the first time I have had books pressed.

    2. It’s actually a pretty common problem with Crow #1 2nd and 3rd printings. There has been a few unslabbed to reveal they are not 1st prints on some message boards. When checking the publishing date it reads kinda weird because it states the first print date, and if you stop looking after you find that you might miss the 2nd and 3rd print dates towards the bottom.

  10. I somehow snagged a Old Man Logan #1 Deodato variant at cover, must of been in someone’s pull and they didn’t like it so they sat out on the shelf. I was also able to grab most of the Cho variants except Wolverine.. figures, the one I mostly wanted.
Also grabbed the Jonesy Virgin Variant… wasn’t even going to pick this up but can’t turn down a variant at cover.

  11. Saving all my money this week for Amazing Arizona Comic Con. Consider checking it out if you are nearby. It’s a truly comics focused event.

  12. I ended up getting deadpool #7 and Darth Vader #16. Even though I don’t read Darth Vader any more, the cover was well worth it. Question what would you pay for a Amazing Spider Man 9.4 non professional graded just shop graded?

  13. Not a spec-heavy week for me. Gave the Neal Adams variants a miss. Didn’t see them doing much on eBay yesterday. Maybe I’ll regret that.
My one victory was that Greg at Black Cat sold me a Archer and Armstron ashcan for $5.00!

    1. It’s not an ashcan.
This was written and drawn by the writer of the new Archer & Armstrong series, Rafer Roberts. It’s a bootleg.
It was a freebie given to select comic stores.

  14. Snow Blind #3
No Mercy #7 Still on the potential to be cut list.
Legend of Wonder Woman #2 for the wife
    Last Contract #2
    James Bond #4
We’re getting snow today so I may not pick up my books tonight. Stupid stupid snow.

  15. Busy day today, just only now back from getting my books.
    This week I got :
    Shield
    Batman – reg and adams
    Batman tmnt
    Hellblazer
    Deadpool
    Silk
    Spiderman/deadpool build your own deadpool
    Spread
    Darth vader
    Autumnlands
    Flash

  16. Today’s pickups in Western NY:
    Batman 49 – both covers
    Batman/Superman – Adams cover
    Hip Hop Family Tree #7
    Silk 4
All New Wolverine – Cho Variant
    Bombshells #9
    Dark & Bloody
    This week online:
3 copies of Escape from Monster island cosplay variant – got them as soon as I saw the variant envy article…. THANKS!!!
    Ms. Marvel – Cho Variant
I recently discovered Milo Manera and really dig his non-marvel stuff… The more “adult” art. Found a series called “Butterscotch” printed by EROS in the early 90s, picked up issues 1-3. I love the covers, but they won’t be going up on the wall…

    1. Also, for our international bidders, my profile had no international shipping when I setup the auctions and apparently eBay does not allow one to revise an auction (can’t change anything, even adding international shipping that doesn’t affect existing bidders) after bids are made. Dumbest policy ever, and I let that poor support guy know my feelings.
Anyways, if you are international, just change your address to be a U.S. to bid and we’ll make sure it gets to you if you do happen to win the auction.
      Cheers.

  17. Small week so small in fact I was going to skip today and going this weekend. I broke down and went by one store real quick. So besides what’s in my pullbox and what I already pre-ordered I picked up.
    Old Man Logan #2
    Jones #1
Moon Girl and Dev. Dino #3 I’ll at least read it until the end of the first arc.
I looked for the Trespasser #1 but did not find it. Next week looks like a small week too.
