X-23 in Wolverine 3?

Seems a casting call went out for a “female of Caucasian, Hispanic or Asian decent over the age of 21” which got people thinking that X-23 could be in the third and final Hugh Jackman Wolverine film.
Superhero Hype had the exclusive:

It’s been known for some time that the upcoming Wolverine 3 will feature Hugh Jackman’s Logan and Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier teaming up, but there may be another X-Men character along for the ride in the film. Though it remains unconfirmed, we’ve heard that the mutant X-23 will be making her feature debut and will join Wolverine and Professor X for their journey in the sequel.

Screen Rant had the news of the casting call.
Of course, X-23 first appeared in NYX #3. Wolverine #80 had a test tube that was marked X-23. This has become known as the first reference to her. Copies of both books have been moving nicely today.

    1. Jubilee had been done. Of course this (X-23 being cast) is wild speculation on the part of the web sites, but wild speculation can be fun.

  1. Missed out when NYX #3 first hit the stands and grumbled a bit when I bought a NM copy months later for roughly $25. It will stay in my pc but glad I got it! Picked up a NM Wolverine #80 for $10 just in case. Nice to have and still not expensive. Unless anyone bought multiple copies of NYX #3 early it might be too high a price now to do any serious spec buying.

      1. No, it would not. If this turns out to be true and if she replaces Wolverine in future movies the book could be huge in time…but Fox could simply reset the xmen franchise with a new wolverine as well. Depends on where they think the money is. Just a guess at this point.

    1. UGH. This one is still a sore spot for me. I remember picking it up and thumbing through it. If I recall correctly, the first issue had some sort of violence against kids or violence against a father with the kids watching and being a new father, I said “Nope!” and put it back. Oh to go back and do it all over again.

      1. Don’t feel too bad Elvi, I remember taking a look at the Walking Dead #1 when it first came out at my local comic shop, thinking no more zombies or Vampires right now… I was getting a little bored with “the undead” saturation at the time so I put it down…oops.

      1. Scammed? For $10 bucks? OK. If is doesn’t gain traction then no big deal. I can live with that. If it does show X23 labeled as a test subject then it will certainly move. Even if it does it will never be a huge key, more of a novelty.

      2. That’s the point: IT DOES NOT SHOW HER. X-23 does NOT appear in Wolverine #80 in ANY way, shape, or form. Not as a fetus, not as a sample, not as a glimmer in a scientist’s eye. It is NOT X-23. AT ALL.
There’s no traction FOR it to gain, because it was made up by some random person on the internet, and is completely non-canon. PERIOD.

      3. @Anthony
        1) Marvel doesn’t acknowledge it. AT ALL. The earliest reference *I* can find to it is a post on Bleeding Cool c.2014. Bleeding Cool has NO affiliation with Marvel whatsoever.
        2) It completely ignores facts established in her origin book:
        a) Her name has NOTHING to do with a sample name. It specifically refers to the fact she’s the 23rd attempt to create a female clone (“X” refers to X-CHROMOSOME, NOT the Weapon X project).
        b) The sample she was created from was recovered by Dale Rice during Logan’s escape from Weapon X. Sutter recovered it from his corpse immediately after. There’s no evidence that Dr. Munoz was ever involved with the Facility, or that it ever passed through her hands.
It’s fanon. Period. That’s all it ever was, and that’s all it ever WILL be. ESPECIALLY so long as Marvel doesn’t acknowledge it. To say it has “traction” is at BEST laughable.

        1. D.E. I do not deny what you are saying is proof that it is not her. That is not in question. What I am saying has traction is the book has heat behind it because of what you are saying is “fanon”. Regardless of fact or fiction, the book has gone from quarter bin fodder to a book selling for $10, and as such, is worth taking note of.

        2. What causes a book to heat up, and this has been a slow burn to this price point, can be one of a million small things, but once it gets noticed or out in the public arena, it can cause a book to gain traction. There is a Spiderman book that randomly has a black hand shown that did not trigger Spidey’s spider sense. It is simply a character they never visited. However, people have said this is Venom’s hand, true or not, purely speculation, with no backing from Marvel, which caused the book to rise in value. (dang if I can remember the issue) but it is still worth looking for as something that has appreciated and value and does/can sell on Venom news when it pops up.

  2. Hopefully it will be her and she does replace Hugh in the future movies, because I don’t know about you guys but I don’t think I can accept someone else playing Wolverine.

  3. “Wolverine #80 had a test tube that was marked X-23. This has become known as the first reference to her.”
No. No it’s not. It’s pure fanon and is NOT recognized by Marvel at all. I get so damn sick of seeing this reference pop up.

  4. Other key x-23 comics are NYX 4, NYX hardcover, X-Men 450-1, X-23 series and variants such as All New X-Men 25, Wolverines 3 or All New Wolverine 1.

  5. Can anyone prove that Marvel does not endorse Wolverine 80 as part of X-23’s origin? It may not be her first appearance but it sure is an X-23 key until someone can prove otherwise.

    1. All you need to do is look X up on marvel.com.
      First appearance: NYX #3.
With absolutely NO mention of Wolverine #80 whatsoever in ANY way connected with X-23.
Think about how stupid it sounds: You’re talking about an issue that was drawn and written a full DECADE before Kyle and Yost created her for X-Men: Evolution. That’s a BIG one, right there: She was created for the CARTOON, which is a separate universe with a completely separate continuity, and the creators of the show would have had no reason to reference such an obscure detail from the main 616 comics universe.
Not only that, but it completely ignores EVERYTHING Marvel establishes in Innocence Lost: X-23 does NOT get her name from a sample number. She gets her name from the fact that she was the 23rd attempt to create a viable female embryo (the “X” specifically comes from the use of Logan’s X-CHROMOSOME, NOT the Weapon X project) from a genetic sample recovered by Dale Rice, and recovered by Martin Sutter from his corpse after Logan’s escape from the installation where he was given his adamantium skeleton. Sarah Kinney DEFIED ORDERS to create her (her request to make the female clone was denied. She did it anyway), which means the materials she was using never left her personal possession until she was forced to serve as the surrogate. At NO POINT did the samples that the Facility used to create Laura pass through the hands of Dr. Munoz.
There is absolutely NOTHING from either the books or any reference material from Marvel itself that supports Wolverine #80 being her first appearance or mention.
      It’s pure FANON.

      1. Also, the sliding time scale screws with things a bit, but:
X-23 was 15-16 when she first appeared in NYX #3. That means she would have been born in 1989 at the latest at the time she first appeared (like I said, sliding timescale messes with things a bit going forward). Wolverine #80 would have been set in 1994 when first released, which means she would have been born at LEAST five years BEFORE that sample was shown. So even in THAT regard it’s impossible for that sample to have been in any way connected with Laura.

      2. Someone should ask the creators, there was an article in Wizard about this which was published soon after X-23’s creation which if I remember correctly gives some validity to the argument for it being an X-23 key but don’t quote me on that! Time to do some research I guess.

      3. I wouldn’t put too much faith in timeline continuity with any comic. Also, “If” Marvel did decide to give this credibility at some point and there was a timeline issue all they would have to say is that test tube is a remnant or what was left over or something to that regard. They could easily change whatever is needed to their advantage. I have feeling Larry Hama would be able to shed more light on this. Was that done on purpose to expand future story-lines and introduce new characters at some point or is this all a coincidence that fans are putting together themselves.. both? Even if the latter is true is doesn’t not mean Marvel won’t head in that direction. Also, “if” Marvel did there is no way this would ever be considered her first appearance…Only her first mention. Again, little more than a novelty, but one with potential legs.
