Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery 8/10/16

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each with potential. Some life up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our comics picks of the week for delivery 8/10/16:
Returning Favorites
Night Trap #3 – This book is really it for horror fans. Reminds me of a cross between Cabin in the Woods and Friday the 13th.

Spread #15 – Still loving this book. The classic cross between Lone Wolf and Cub and The Thing keeps expanding outwards and has become a serious favorite around here.
Harrow County #15 –  Cullen Bunn has two books on the returning favorites this week. His horror books are top notch.
DC Rebirth Ones
Superwoman #1 – Lois Lane inherited New 52 Superman’s powers as he was passing. Here she starts her solo adventures. Actually looking forward to this one.
All Star Batman #1 Jock Variant – Mel said it best the other day, I would pay extra if this was a 1:25 variant. Jock Batman covers have done well in the past and this beauty is worth the pickup.
New #1’s
Black Monday Murders #1 – Jonathan Hickman can put out some good stories when he can commit to finishing them. The cover alone on this one has me intrigued and think it would make a hell of a rock t-shirt. Will check it out.
The one with the Crazy Number of Reprints
Fix 1 Fifth Printing – Seriously this book keeps rocking. It is catching up to Spiderman Deadpool for the amount of reprints in the first issue.
Small Press Pick of the Week
Rochelle #1 – Not sure if we have ever spotlighted an Antarctic Press book before but this one looks really interesting.

It’s tough being different, especially when you’re a teenager, but Rochelle Planeta is a survivor like none other-a human cockroach!

The Pick of the Week
Jim Henson’s Labyrinth 30th Anniversary Special – This is going to be one shops do not go big on because of the $9.99 cover price. This one collects the FCBD stories plus new ones. This one has several things going for it, nostalgic fans, David Bowie recently passed, a 1:10 Mike Allred variant that is amazing, and a SDCC Variant cover that is selling for $25 and up that can be purchased for less than that.

  1. Yes! Night Trap is so good! I’ll be grabbing that and the 1:10 Labyrinth cover as well. Great picks this week bud

    1. I’m also loving Night Trap. Such a great throwback to the old slasher flicks. I’d love more books like this. One that was solicited this month is called Lord of Gore. I haven’t seen any preview pages but the cover and description make it sound like it will be in the same vein.

      1. Lord of Gore is a graphic novel I think. I am looking forward to it. Slasher comics are hard to do right. Hard to build suspense in a comic but Bunn does a good job.

      2. “Lord of Gore” is going to be a mini-series. I actually got a bunch of preview books for it from Daniel Liester at Heroes Con, to help spread the word here. I’m a big fan of his work, after his runs on GFT: Wonderland & Hack/Slash.
Did “Night Trap” turn into a 4-issue mini-series? I thought it was going to be ongoing. The most recent Previews didn’t have a new issue, and the TPB did not have a Volume Number; as if it was the entire series in the TPB.

        1. I hadn’t heard anything about Night Trap being shortened. I was trying to remember what the original solicitations were for it. I don’t think it was originally solicited as an ongoing though.
I’m pre-ordering Lord Of Gore so I’m glad to hear the initial praise for it.

  2. Hey guys need some advice. This is a tough one.Received my animosity variant today. The blindbox color one that is limited to 150 copies.I love the book cant decide to hold or sell and what could it be worth if i do decide to sell. Thanks

    1. First to market always does well. However there may be more to this book in the long run. If you need to, take the money and run but I could see the reasoning for holding (collection versus flip as your reasoning for purchasing)

    2. I would hold for a bit. This book is only on issue #1 that is sold-out. If you do sell it, give Mel V first dibs and avoid ebay fees.

  3. I see you mentioning some DC Rebirth books and you give no love to the only one I am interested in? “Deathstroke,” has my attention for one reason only, Christopher Priest is writing it. That alone makes it worth picking-up I would say. The man is a comic-writing master as his years of work show. Sorry if that sounds cranky, there just isn’t a single other, “Rebirth,” book I have interest in.

    1. I got Deathstroke Rebirth last week. I’m not sure what happened but my shop had them early and said they were rushed to market. I’ve never read a Deathstroke book before but I found it kind of confusing. I’m going to give it a few issues to see if the new arc grabs my attention but I don’t see myself holding this book for long.

      1. Hm. It is legitimately the only Rebirth book I have been interested in reading so your warnings have me a bit concerned. I’ll still pick it up and shall report back if I was confused too.

        1. I got Deathstroke #1 today. I got the Rebirth issue last week and that’s what I read. I was confused about that. So the Rebirth issue was confusing to me, but again that’s coming from someone whose never read Deathstroke and it seemed to be tying up a bunch of lose ends. Felt more like the final chapter than a rebirth to me. I’m going to try the first few issues and see what happens.

  4. Heavy metal is coming out with a book called: The Atoll #1. Cant find it in ANY shop around here and the story sounds awesome. Might be a sleeper.

    1. I’m seeing it’s suppose to come out next week, August 17th. I bet Midtown will list them as available later today when they update their new releases for next week. Snag it then if they do.

      1. Yea, just came back from the LCS and they told me the release date is actually not available to them right now but I added the series to my pull list so all good.

        1. Well, Midtown didn’t list them for next week (even though they have it listed as Available Soon with 8/17/16 release date) so it might of gotten pushed back. We can blame Diamond then.. Diamond sucks.

  5. wonder when Superman 52 Final Days will start heating up…maybe there’s a flashback in Superwoman 1. The title is Superwoman but I wonder if Lois Lane continues being Superwoman down the line since it’s killing her.

    1. Hey John. Love when creators stop by. It seemed to have the feel of old Spiderman back when Peter was the focus as much in costume as out and when he had problems everyone could relate to.

      1. That was the aim, Anthony. I want to bring back a series similar to what I grew up with, hence the classic feel. Glad you enjoyed issue #1, but wait until you meet Major Mess (Issue #2) and Big Country (#3). It only gets better.
