Poyo's Picks of the Week for August 24th, 2016

It’s new comic book Wednesday, the best day of each week. All us comic book addicted nerds come back out (from wherever we hide) to talk about what we think is going to be the next big thing in the comic book world.
So let’s talk about them then.
DC/Vertigo Pick
Detective Comics #939 (DC) – It was mentioned previously this week here on CHU, something big may be happening. But when the writers come up with descriptions that end with, “Believe us, you are not prepared for the last scene!”, something big might happen. Are we prepared, probably not. Is it going to be big? Probably not and nothing we can’t handle. Usually when they build this type of hype, it usually falls flat and it’s just something that pisses us comic lovers off. But we’ll see what Tynion and gang have in store for us.
Marvel Pick
Civil War Ulysses #1 (Marvel) – There is really nothing of importance coming out for Marvel this week but this, only because it’s Francavilla doing the cover. This is one I might actually pick up but not even read, because I have zero interest in the Ulysses prequel to Civil War II.
Spec of the Week
Once Our Land #2 (Scout Comics) – #1 was a hit, #2 expect to be lower print run and likely harder to come by. Online retailers sold out very quickly once listed. So grab’em if you can find them.
The Image #1
Lake of Fire #1 (Image) – It’s a new Image #1 but honestly, I am not very excited about this one. The whole alien coming down during the middle ages reminds me too much of X-O Manowar, except they’re not kidnapping them to be slaves but just blood thirsty aliens. I’ll skim it, might pick it up.. but I don’t see this one going anywhere. It’s a pick only because it’s an Image #1 and I kind of wanted to rag on it a little. Hopefully it proves me wrong.
It’s Godzilla Pick
Godzilla Rage Across Time #1 (IDW) – I love Godzilla. My kid loves Godzilla. I have been loving these series, sharing them with the kiddo. So this one is no different. Godzilla rocks and I’ve been loving Matt Frank’s artwork in these. So it’s an automatic pick for sure. This one only has 1 cover as well, no sub or retailer incentive like most of the other series.
The “Has Potential” Pick
Kingsway West #1 (Darkhorse) – Greg Pak brings us Kingsway West, a chinese gunslinger, out to find his wife after being imprisoned for years but wait, there’s magic, monsters, racist vigilantes and a woman who needs his help that wields a magic sword. Definitely one to check out.
Now, it’s on to Poyo’s Pulls of the week:
Dept H #5 (Darkhorse) – I’m actually behind on my readings and only got through #1 to make sure I like this series and yes, I like this series. Been picking these up to do a binge read, cause binge reads are the best, to soak in more story at a time because we all know when you read just about everything coming out, it’s hard to keep track when you read one issue a month.
Flash #5 (DC) – I must be honest, out of the After Birth titles now.. Flash still has me reading them. I’ve always like Flash but I was never big in reading his comics. So give credit to Joshua Williamson, he’s turned me into a Flash reader currently.
Titans #2 (DC) – I think I mentioned this before on CHU but Titans has been good, probably one of my favorite titles thus far in this after birth goo.. Hope Abnett keeps me interested and doesn’t fall flat cause it’s still early and can be vanish from my pull list as fast as a fart in a car with the windows down.
Chew #57 (Image) – It’s CHU.. Chu.. Chew.. obviously if you have been around long enough, you know this is a no brainer love of mine.
That’s all I got this week. Next week I’ll be out of town for work, so perhaps Anthony can fill in for me, try to pick what I think would be my picks of the week and I’ll come back and tell him how close he was or how wrong he was.

  1. I believe there is a Matt Frank cover and a Bob Eggleton cover for Godzilla Rage Across Time. Love me some Godzilla!

    1. Is it delayed? None of my shops got any of the Frank Cover if true and Midtown only listed the Eggleton cover as well.

      1. Mycomicshop has the Frank cover listed as the SUB variant – don’t think it’s ever been priced to sell though, so maybe it didn’t come out?

  2. I have x4 Once our Land #2 coming. Hope it stays in demand.
Flash is one of the only rebirth titles I’ve been doubling up on. As others have said, kinda feels like this title could be the new 52 Batman long term. I just wish the art was a little better/more traditional.

    1. Yeah, it was a very light week for me as well. I pretty much stayed in my $50 budget range.
