Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery for 8/31/16

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 8/31/16:
Hopefully going to be another small week for me as Baltimore Comic Con is next weekend. Going to squirrel away some cash for that. Lot’s of books to get signed and graded (will be making available 10 copies of Supergirl Rebirth #1 double signed by Adam Hughes and Steve Orlando. Once they get back from CBCS that is)
Anyway, on to the picks
Returning Favorites:
Cryptocracy #3 – This conspiracy laden book has kept my interest pretty well. It is a good read and I am enjoying seeing where the story of the 9 families that control the world is going
Image Plus #5 – Negan, plus kick ass previews of new Image comics for $1.99, best cheap spec. All it takes is one of the books to go gold.
Saga #37 – BKV rules and this epic story is a must read every month. New story line starts here and an excellent place to pick up new readers.
Tokyo Ghost #10 – I am sad to see that this book is ending but it has been a great ride. Rick Remender is fantastic and this odd ball story has had me hooked since the second issue.
Afterlife With Archie #10 – You can’t rush art, at least that is what the reps at Archie told me last year when I asked about the delays with the book. Needless to say, the gripping story has kept me coming back. Two awesome covers this month a Francesco Francavilla cover featuring an undead looking Josie from the Pussycats fame, and a Jim Balent cover from the adult series Tarot Witch of the Black Rose.
Broken Moon Legends of the Deep #1 – I love American Gothic Press and the first mini series was really good with a re-imaging of classic movie monsters.
New and Noteworthy #1’s
Equilibrium #1 – fans of the movie will be picking this up. I just wish it came closer to the release of the movie. But still, going back and visiting the Equilibrium world will be good.
TMNT Universe #1 – Eastman and Laird’s classic series gets an “All Star” take as a rotating cast of creators get their hands on the turtles.
Eden’s Fall #1 – Crossing over the Postal, Tithe, and Think Tank stories into one cohesive universe. Now where is our Postal TV show?
One for the  book shelf
Alena – This looks so dang good, fans of Dario Argento horror will like this. There was also a movie of this released in Sweden on the 19th

Alena’s life is a living hell. Since she arrived at a snobbish boarding school, she’s been harassed every day by Philippa and the girls on the lacrosse team. But Alena’s best friend Josephine is not going to accept that anymore. Not from the counselor or the principal, not from Philippa, and not from anyone else at that horrid school. If Alena does not fight back, then Josephine will take matters into her own hands. There’s just one problem . . . Josephine has been dead for a year.

The Pick of the Week
It’s a tie….
Killer Inside Me #1 – New crime series from IDW. This book is selling out everywhere, both covers.
Skip to the End #1 – From Heavy Metal so it will have a small print run. Imagine if Kurt Cobain had lived and what the story would be like, that is the feel that this sci-fi tale has.

Jonny Wells desperately wants to relive his grunge rock royalty past. As bassist of Samsara, he craved the Rock’n’Roll lifestyle that eventually claimed the life of the band’s visionary lead singer and his best friend. Now a VH1 cautionary tale of drug addiction and self-loathing, Wells trades his smack for an old battered guitar, and discovers that returning to his former glory days are only a few chords away. Literally.

That’s it for me this week. A bigger week than I thought. Let us know what you are spec-ing on.

      1. I probably would have picked it, so good job Anthony. Some weeks, it’s hard to pick a Marvel and DC book since I started doing it. I have a harder time picking the DC books though, since I’m more Marvel than DC.

        1. I have all but given up on the big two. Rebirth got me back in to DC as did the previous Hold the Line at $2.99 did. Sadly, I grew up as a Marvel guy and have an amazing collection of Marvel books that I no longer care about.

  1. So glad Saga is back. I’m used to reading Afterlife with Archie with 7 to 9 months or more in between, hopefully it will stay on a more regular schedule.

  2. Also picking up Terminarch (one shot) which has an interesting premise. Should be ordered in very low numbers so might be a good spec we’ll see.

  3. The delays on “Afterlife with Archie” have only caused Archie Comics to Lose Money. That series was On Fire when it debuted, but a lot of people have given up on it entirely. I was told it was the writer, Aguirre-Sacasa, causing the delays, because he had to prioritize film & TV Projects and they didn’t want to move forward without him. I remember that happening with other series’ where TV Talent was writing the series, and it would always get the back-burner. I think that was the reason the original Young Avengers series did not continue; because Marvel wanted to wait on Allen Heinberg rather than let another writer handle the characters. And after several delays, they just decided to end the ongoing and do a couple mini-series’ when Heinberg had finished scripts in advance for them.

    1. Same thing happened with Non-Player. One issue came out and then it was optioned. Focus shifted from the comic to the media deal. Then after years and the rights lapsing the book came back only to disappear after 2 issues were released (and reprints of the first issue. )

  4. Where is our Postal TV show? That’s a hit TV show just waiting to happen. We’ll see about Eden’s Fall. I’m not famaliar with Think Tank so I’m hoping this book makes sense to me. Love Postal and The Tithe however.

    1. I do love think tank. It started out in Fort Meade Maryland. At the time I was living across the street from the army base so it was cool to have a comic happening across the street (even though the depiction of Fort Meade base was way off and they seemed to combine NSA with Fort Meade)

  5. Picked up a couple of copies of Killer Inside Me, got them both signed by Vic at the LCS. You want to talk about a down-to-earth good guy, he’s about as unpretentious (and gracious) as they come…a welcome relief. And the work on the book fits perfectly, IMHO.
