Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery 9/14/16

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 9/14/16:
Huge, wallet breaking week this week. Lots of good reads and some spec books too.
Returning Favorites
Birthright #19 – Joshua Williamson’s epic fantasy story continues. Really one of my favorite books on the market.
Black Monday Murders #2 – Awesome new series. First issue left me wanting more.
Briggs Land #2 – Really great first issue. Already optioned, and from the first issue alone, it will pick up Sons of Anarchy Fans.
The Fix #5 – This comedy buddy cop book has been rocking. After a short break for the first TPB it is back.
Harrow County #16 – Cullen Bunn is a master of horror. This series, which has been optioned, is one of the best reads out there.
Stray Bullets Sunshine and Roses #18 – One of the most underrated crime saga books ever. Such and awesome blend of crime, with a touch of sick humor.
Jeff Steinberg Champion of the Earth #2– The first issue of this book was hilarious, need to see where it goes.
Spread #16 – Hands down my favorite book on the market. Lone Wolf and Cub meets John Carpenter’s The Thing.
The DC Surge
Gotham Academy Second Semester #1 Fiona Staples Variant – I like Fiona Staples. Her variant for the first season has done ok on the secondary market. No reason this one shouldn’t.
Detective Comics #940 – Does Red Robin die?
Doom Patrol #1 – Young Animal starts here. I remember the birth of the Vertigo line. This feels like that.
Flash #6 – Full on Godspeed. I know people have gotten a little tired of the hints about him, now we get him full on. I am still excited.
The New #1’s
Strain Mr. Quinlan Vampire Hunter #1
The Forevers #1 – New Black Mask series…. Five friends struggling on the brink of stardom sacrifice everything in a black magic pact that brings them all the wealth and glamour they ever wanted. Years later though, the ‘glow’ is fading. But when one of them dies, and they feel a surge of magic rise amongst them, they soon realize that they all share in the power of the glow. And when a member of the group decides to kill the rest and claim the glow for their own, they suddenly find themselves fighting for their lives. As they search for the killer’s identity, each of The Forevers must face the macabre reality of the lengths to which some people will go to be adored, and to make certain that the spotlight never fades
Dark Souls Legends of the Dark Flame #1 – Last Dark Souls series did well off the bat. Unsure if this one can pull it off again. First issue Cover A has been allocated….
One for the Reading Shelf
Fix TPB 1 – If you haven’t read the book, this is a good way to catch up on the awesome series.
Pick of the Week
Animosity #2– Hands down the winner. Already sold out at many online shops. Already being listed for more that cover price online. And a dang good read too.

    1. Yeah, you have to really get into Hickman’s work.. he’s a master of words and dialogue, sometimes I even have to reread some narration or bubbles to get what they’re saying to make it all make sense.

      1. I like Hickman, but too many of his books seem to start and then suddenly stop coming out before eventually returning much later or never coming back. It makes me hesitant to read anything new from him before it is collected.

        1. Yeah, he does seem to be getting worse about this. Dying and the Dead started off to be his best read yet.. it needs to come back. East of West is his only title that seems to be going strong but I’m pretty certain I read somewhere that he claimed he had already written up to issue 50 or so.. so it’s likely just the artist doing his thing to pump those out.

        1. So let’s start a Change.org petition to Hickman to bring Dying back.. or rather sooner since he said it was gonna come back in the Spring. I have a thinking it might be Image playing their tricks as well.. which I don’t understand, they seem to hold back on some great titles, with their, release first 3.. pause.. release some more.. pause.. and so on.

            1. Well, I do recall he started it around the time he started Secret Wars.. then he claimed it’s on hiatus until this coming March or so.. so it’s likely his fault, maybe he’s still writing the story.. not sure why he’s started an entirely new book though. I wish most writers would be more like BKV.. that’s a man that comes up with a story and sticks with it to the end, doesn’t seem to get distracted.. focuses on just one or two stories at a time. Probably why his stories and books do so well.. he puts a lot of thought and effort into them to make them the best they can be.

            2. I think a lot of writers start stories that pop into their heads but they never think them all the way through.. that’s why we see a lot of books start and then kind of just stop, right in the middle or early on, then we never get any closure on the stories.. πŸ™

              1. At least at the time, Hickman said the double or triple first issue put them so far behind that it was to blame for them getting off track. However it’s been months, long past his Spring target date, that I assume the series is dead at this point. Starting a brand new series is probably the final nail in the coffin.
BKV probably has enough money and name recognition that he can make something without worrying about how it’s going to do. Hickmans got the name but I don’t think his indie books are selling in BKV numbers.

                1. That is true. But then again, if you strive and focus on making a good product, then you and anyone could be like BKV. Stop starting projects you can’t finish. πŸ™‚

                2. I read first few of USofMurder….. it got cut, pull lit getting too big. Glad did, since it kind of just halted…. Bendis is bad about that as well on his own creator own series.

                3. United States of murder inc at least ended at a good point. It was supposed to continue but it was a satisfying conclusion to that first arc. I really really liked it though so I think it hit me especially hard when it disappeared. The annual has been solicited for over a year. I think October is the newest date but it keeps getting pushed back (and has for over a year at this point).
