Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 101st edition of the open forum!
Crazy hectic day for me. Missing all sorts of deadlines so bear with me!!!
“Don’t mess with my Wednesdays”.
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. I’m starting to fall behind, I just finished last week’s books! Man, having to actually work sucks!
    This week I’m getting:
    Action comics
    All new inhumans
    All star batman
    Civil War 2 asm
    Birthright
    Deadpool
    Detective comics
    Doom patrol
    Green lanterns
    Hal jordan and the corps
    Jla
    Spread
    Flash
    Uncanny avengers
    Uncanny inhumans

    1. Yes, I use to stay on top of my reading.. I’m so far behind. I think I have close to 140 Marvel books I have yet to read.. and almost two short boxes of all my other independents that I don’t have digital codes for.
I’ve been so busy with work and playing dad, now that I’m contracting/consulting, I have the time to pick up kids from school, take to their extra curricular activities but then I’m usually pulling out the laptop and working off to the side. So busy.. so very busy. I’m tired. I’ll probably be working at the hotel late at night and during the NYCC coming up where I’m meeting Anthony, representing CHU.. 🙂

  2. There are a grip of books I’ll be picking up, but heads down I’m excited for Birthright! If you haven’t read it, you better get on it. When it takes off you’re going to wish you did.

  3. This weeks pickups…
Champions #1 Mike Perkins Carnage variant color and B/W Unknown comics
Champions #1 Kirkham variant Krs comics
Back in Black #1 Kirkham variant Krs comics
    Both covers of the Flash

    1. I picked up the Champions #1 Kirkham variant Krs comics and then I realize it won’t ship until Oct. Damn, that is a long wait. I almost forget I’ve ordered it already.

  4. Pretty big week for me this week…
    All-Star Batman #1
    Birthright #19
    The Black Monday Murders #2
    Black Panther #6
    Black Science #24
    Detective Comics #940
    The Fix #5
    Harrow County #16
    House of Pennance #6
    Lady Killer 2 #2
    Southern Cross #7
    Spread #16
    Star Wars: TFA #4
Additionally, I picked up Hot Topic’s new Zebra/Bullseye Batman 2-pack Pop set, a Detective Mode Batman Pop, Gotham Bruce Wayne Pop, Batman Keychain Pop, and some Pop protectors half-off using Hot Topic Cash. Here’s a code for $30 off $60 if anyone wants to take advantage – HEQTJAL4

  5. I picked up Black Panther #6 UDON Variant for $6. I’d love some advice on flipping vs. holding. Looks like lowest BIN’s are $39.99. I’m not familiar with Black Panther – what do you guys think about this book long term?

    1. Flip. The question you have to ask yourself is why would you be holding it? For the chance for it to go up? There is always that potential but also the potential that it would go down. If you do not collect the series or do not want to collect the book, there is no sense in keeping it. But yes, there is always the potential that the price could grow long term but there is also an equal chance that it doesn’t. I always advocate for moving in and out of books.

        1. No worries. I would be happy to go over my logic on this in more detail but generally my rule of thumb is to flip quick and not worry about price increases later.

      1. Yup, hold too long, you’ll be biting your tongue later when it drops. My advice on Marvel variants (and most others) is.. they’re more likely to go down after the hype than go up. The only time a variant with a harder to find ratio goes up is if the issue itself is special, as in, first appearance of a character or death, etc. When it’s just the cover variant that drives the price up initially at release, the bet that it’s going to go down in price is more likely.
I purchased one myself but primarily because I collect the series and it’s for the PC, the price now, a year from now or 50 years from now is mute for me.
If the price does happen to go up after you drop a quick sale and profit, never do the “why didn’t I hold longer” because more times than not, you get use to holding too long on all the books you think will go up in value, you’ll likely lose more than win.

  6. All Star Batman
Briggs Land #2 Absolutely fantastic read.
    Control #4
    Fix #5
Lady Killer #2 Fastasic art and a fun story
    Night Trap #4
    Wonder Woman #6
    Deathstroke #2
Deathstroke is on my about to be cut list. This book will be the deciding factor.

  7. All Star Batman #2 Jock variant
    Superwoman #2 Dodson
    Briggs Land #2
    Oh, lots of number twos…
Picked up a few Rebirth titles from recent weeks in a visit to a shop in another town yesterday, all at cover, gonna flip for about x3 going by recent sales. Also, Eclipse #1, Kill or Be Killed #1 1st print and KOBK #2, also 1st print, all at cover.

    1. I found one last week! I was kicking myself for flipping every one i found when the hype went up, since I actually read the series and had a gap, and then I found one

  8. Picking up:
    Spread 16
Avatar the Last Airbender V13 TPB
    RCCC stuff:
I finally picked up a copy of Showcase 79, green Dolphin cover.
Got a lot of stuff signed by Geof Darrow. He didn’t offer to sketch until I bought a HC copy of Shaolin Cowboy V2 for $20.
Had two books signed and verified by CBCS to press and slab, my Strangers in Paradise 1 1st printing and Star Wars 1 Stan Sakai variant (look for a picture, it is an awesome Darth Vader/Yoda duel). Creators are charging extra for verified signatures. Terry Moore was an extra $10. Stan Sakai was an extra $20.
Terry Moore signed both versions of Hit the Beach 1, his first published work. I also had him sign my SIP Omnibus. I gifted him copies of books that I upgraded, a copy of Hit the Beach 1 and SIP 1 3rd printing. In return, he gave me a signed copy of his sketch book. He also signed my daughters books he wrote on how to draw.
Stan Sakai signed my HC Sakai Project. Mike Mignola signed my HC copy of Midnight Circus. Eric Powell signed copies of SSBII and Hillbilly 1. He had two Hillbilly 1 variants for sale, but I did not purchase them. Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon signed and sketched my HC How to Talk to Girls based on a Neil Gaiman story.
The largest signing lines were for Amanda Conner and Jim Palmiotti. They signed my copy of The Pro. Amanda signed my copy of her first published work, Solo Avengers Hawkeye. She was so happy to see it, she signed it twice, once on the cover and once inside.
The second largest line was for Matt Fraction/Kelly Sue DeConnick. They are local, so I have seen them before.
My daughter and I are huge Samurai Jack fans. Last Christmas, I made her a framed collage with original line art from the show and signed Mako and Genndy Tartatovsky cards. I removed it from the frame, brought it to the show, and had Phil LaMarr sign it. He was the voice of Jack.
This was also Stan Lee’s last show.
This year’s show was much larger than past shows. I used to be able to traverse the floor twice in a day. This year, I was only able to hit about half the floor and had little time for digging in boxes. I missed the Weta Workshop exhibit, the Lego exhibit, and all of the retro video gaming machines. The Portland Retro Video Game Expo is coming up so I can always go to that. There were more comic vendors than past years, but I just did not have time to look as much as I wanted.
I only went to a few panels. I went to the Voice Actor panel where prominent cartoon and video game voice actors read a Ghostbusters script in the voices of their other characters. It was fun to hear Jim Cummings read serious parts as Pooh or Tigger. I caught the last half of Billy Boyd’s panel getting a seat to see Stan Lee’s last appearance in Portland. And finally, I went to a small concert put on by the local folk/nerd band, the Doubleclicks. They sing about Wonder Woman, tabletop gaming, velociraptors, and the worst superpower ever and have a song I really like called Love You Like a Burrito.
RCCC is a sister show to Emerald City Comic Con and is trying to compete with Wizard Portland. A couple of years ago, my favorite local show the Stumptown Comics Fest was folded into RCCC. In Portland, we are fortunate to have two such large shows among all of the other smaller shows like Lineworks NW.

  9. Animosity #1 3rd print 3 stores nothing.i wonder if its more scarce than 2nd print. Not many animosity #2 out there either

    1. Animosity 2 was no where to be found. The second issue had to be ordered before the first one sold and retailers didn’t know it was going to be a hit. So second order drop off was in play.

  10. Like others have said, way behind in my reading. Only made it worse by buying too much today…
All Star Batman #2 (reg and Jock covers)
Animosity #2 – grabbed the last copy on the shelf just as I overheard a guy at the front counter asking about it (whew)
    Birthright #19
    Black Monday Murders #2
    Black Science #24
    Briggs Land #2
Doom Patrol #1 – was a huge fan of the Morrison run so curious about this

    Hadrians Wall #1

    Spawn Kills Everyone 2nd printing
    Suicide Squad #2 (Bermejo cover)

Realized after looking over my list that only got one Marvel title. Which I guess is a sign of the times since I grew up purely a Marvel zombie.
