Poyo's Picks of the Week for Sept 14, 2016

Another week, another new comic book Wednesday. I should just skip a few weeks, I’m so far behind in my readings it’s not even funny. I’m sad to say my favorite local shop is closing down, due to landlord issues. No new comics until the end of October when he’s being forced out and that’s just not enough time to find a new shop to operate out of. The owner is entertaining the idea of selling, so if anyone’s in the market of buying a comic book store, well, you’ll have to find a new location…
Enough with the sad news, let’s get on with the picks of the week.
DC/Vertigo
All-Star Batman #2 (DC) – Can’t usually go wrong with Snyder writing Batman. The first issue was awesome, the art wasn’t bad but I’m just not a big fan of Romita Jr. style. The Jock covers are awesome though, so skip the regular cover and pick up the Jock or even the Shalvey cover, can’t go wrong.
Detective Comics #940 (DC) – Someone gonna die? The last issue was a big letdown, let’s hope something actually drastic happens that changes the Batman world forever like they’ve been promising.
Marvel
Black Panther #6 (Marvel) UDON Variant – Just a sweet cover, plus I love Black Panther so yeah, it’s gonna be a pick for sure.
Spec Pick
Animosity #2 (AfterShock) – Already sold out at most online retailers who have listed it. It’s a #2 and I don’t think anyone expected it to be such a big hit so yes, find it, keep it or flip it. #1 went to 3 printings with if I’m not wrong, a 4th print coming as well. That’s pretty significant for the smaller indie publisher.
The Image #1
Hadrians Wall #1 (Image) – The description states it’s from the creative team from the critically acclaimed COWL series.. not sure I’d call that “critically acclaimed” but I always checkout most Image #1 books, they all have some likely potential.
Indie Pick
Strain Mr. Quinlan Vampire Hunter #1 (Dark Horse) – I love The Strain. I love Mr. Quinlan. I hope he’s in the show more but having his own book is just as good.
Poyo’s Favorite Pulls of the Week
Lady Killer 2 #2 (Dark Horse) – Just a great read and the art is just awesome. It’s a must pick up and read.
Birthright #19 (Image) – Great fantasy read and it’s still going strong. It’s a master of stretching a very simple story while maintaining one’s interest in it. Not many could do such a thing.
Black Science #24 (Image) – One of the best sci-fi reads out there currently.
The Fix #5 (Image) – If your not reading it, read it. It’s great.
Spread #16 (Image) – A CHU favorite, one of my favorites.
Black Panther #6 (Marvel) – One of my all time favorite Marvel characters.
Letter 44 #27 (Oni) – Still one of my favorites.
That’s all I got this week..

    1. Well, yeah.. the bottom one is part of Poyo’s favorite pulls of the week. The variant was a specific pick.. 😉

      1. I think you misspelled ‘Gwenpool’ under that variant pick for Marvel. I know you’re all over that cosplay variant… UDON who??!

  1. “Hadrian’s Wall,” sounded interesting enough I was thinking of grabbing a copy. If I love it, great, and if not, well I’ve got a #1 issue of a new Image book that could potentially someday become popular!

  2. I love The Fix. It is the only comic book I’ve ever read that made me literally laughed out loud. The only reason I’m reading the book is because of the #1 Beagle cover on the third print. My wife shows and breed beagles. And we love out beagles. I am happy to say, I now have all the 1st print of each issue. I got a late jump on this book.

  3. I picked up the black panther today at my lcs for 8 bucks. Selling for 39.00 on Ebay. Only one he had. Wowza.
