It’s that time again, where we head out to the local comic shops and give our money away without hesitation. So hopefully everyone’s new year is going okay, you people are sticking to your new years resolutions but right now, let’s talk picks.
DC/Vertigo Pick
All-Star Batman #6 (DC) – Why is this a pick? Well, primarily due to Jock not only doing two of the covers but also the fact he’s doing the interior art as well. We all love Jock and if you don’t like his Batman art, then you can just go suck on a lemon or something. Also noteworthy is a FF Cover C for this issue, can’t go wrong with Francavilla cover.
Marvel Pick
Captain America #9 (Marvel) Jack Kirby 100th Anniversary Cover – You know, everyone’s gonna pick that Spider-Man Isanove variant, because Bendis loves focusing on the sex lives and drama of our superheroes instead of them hero kicking bad guys butts.. so with that said, I’m picking Captain America #9, the Kirby variant because who collects comics and doesn’t know Jack Kirby? A legend, so while everyone likely chases that Spider-Man variant that will be irrelevant in a few months, Kirby will always be relevant, past, present and future.
Small Publisher Pick
God Country #1 (Image) – Old man with dementia, rises from a disaster with a renewed mind and body to battle the creatures that were brought forth by such disaster? Yeah, sign me up. Sounds like my type of book, especially for those that like or liked Rumble, Spread, The Goddamned and other sword wielding heroes fighting mythical monsters and creatures.
Indie Pick of the Week
Knight Guardians of Relativity #1 (Titan1Studios) – From their description, “Recovering from the ravages of the Fourth Great War, a mysterious band of men and women called the Knight Guardians are dispatched to humanity’s six remaining City States to investigate the murder of their revered brother knight, and to protect the last remaining Relativity Machine from those seeking to harness the power of temporal travel and achieve immortality.”
Sounds like a great sci fi type epic story. Expect small print runs as well, I bet this got overlooked by a bunch of shops.
And this week I got an honorable mention cover pick, which goes to Ninjak #23 Regular Cover A which is a Ryan Bodenheim cover. It just brings back that classic type of art they did for older movies. Love it!
What is everyone picking up? Anything you dislike this week, including my picks? Don’t be shy, comment and let’s talk comics.

Jock is one of the best artists in the field of comics, and possibly the best (currently alive) person to pick to draw Batman.
Yeah, one must love his Batman art. It is definitely top notch Batman artwork.
I friggin love jock
Normally I’m more of a ‘who wrote it?’ guy, but if jock draws it I don’t care!
I am definitely looking forward to reading God Country. I’m really interested in Reassignment as well- looks crazy controversial and potentially overlooked. Nice picks with Jock interior for Batman and Kirby variant cover- both look great!
I was going to drop All Star Batman after the first arc and just trade wait, but when I found out Jock was doing the art I changed my mind. I do like that Ninjak cover.
I am waiting for Paul Pope’s run. There has been some controversy about him but I still love his art.
Controversy?
Paul Pope allegedly was hammered and made unwanted advances on a girl. He apparently tried to kiss her. From there, and it is one reported account by the friend of the young lady’s brother, he has been called a “sexual predator”. I have not seen other accounts or anything else lobbed against him, and he has never made a statement on it. So it is an accusation.
Ah… well, hopefully it’s not true but if it is, clean up your act Paul Pope.
Oh and this is one reason why if I was in any type of spotlight of the media, celebrity like spotlight where people take notice.. I would try to never be alone with anyone, especially of the opposite sex in any public type of setting. I’m sure with every actual incident there’s a false accusation made for people seeking some type of monetary gain, etc.
I’m not defending people who do unwanted advances on others but common sense tells me it goes the other way as well with the false stories.
