Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)

We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

The 128th edition of the open forum!

Seems Marvel is continuing on the full court variant press, mind you with what I think are some good looking variants, how do you feel about all these variants?

As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. Vann says:

More of a question here; I have heard a few statements by some that God Country is a mini-series….is there any truth to this? Very curious myself as I cannot substantiate either avenue….

Does anyone actually know for sure what’s up here??

    • Anthony says:

Donny Cates told me himself it is a mini series.

      • agentpoyo says:

It’s still awesome and I’d imagine as a mini-series it seems as if it could easily come back or have some type of spin-off….

      • Vann says:

See? Just another reason why I love this place—thanks Tony and Poyo—appreciate the facts which everyone knows can be in short supply. I think it works better as a mini anyways (as per Poyo’s comments)—it’s just nice to know either way…..especially since I took a decent risk buying a whack of #1.

    • A. King says:

I heard the same thing myself. I have #5 pre-ordered it doesn’t say anything about it being the last issue, I have not seen #6 up for pre-order yet.

    • Brennan says:

I was going to say that having the main character needing to always hold the sword would make for some awkward scenes eventually in an ongoing. There’s only so many ways you can carry a sword around anyways.

    • John Oppliger says:

Image Comics solicitations for June confirm that issue 6 is the final issue of the mini-series.

  2. Brennan says:

I enjoyed a nice week off but are and drank way too much and am not having a lot of fun with what I have to eat for a while to make up for it 😦
Flash is a musical tonight so that will be pretty lame, at least to me. I hate that stuff.
Tomorrow I will be getting :
    Action comics
    Detective comics
    Doom patrol
    Hal Jordan
    Renew your vows
    Uncanny inhumans
    Unworthy Thor

  3. Cody says:

Found out the grades on some books I subbed at eccc.
New mutants 98 cgc 9.6 ss rob Liefield and Fabian Nicieza
New mutants 87 cgc 9.6 ss rob Liefield
Curse words 1 gold foil cgc 9.8ssx2
Curse words 1 eccc variant cgc 9.8ssx2
Extremity 1 eccc variant cgc 9.8 ss Daniel warren Johnson.

Had my hopes up on the 98 being a 9.8 but I’m still super stoked at how it all turned out. The 87 I was hoping for better than 9.0.

  4. JayClue says:

Hey, Tony. As a horror fan, what’s your opinion about that Underwinter book?

  5. Zeus says:

Found two walking dead 100 cover A for a great price..score

Last week was quiet, going to hit the shops tomorrow

  6. xmattvanderx says:

Unworthy Thor #5 1:50 thank me later

    • DrunkWooky says:

I’m grabbing the Stevens variant, the only one my LCS is getting.

    • 2ndfullcameoappearance says:

I lucked out my LCS had one for $10.
Looks like a red hot book.
Trying my luck with the full run including this book on a 3 day auction.
BTW this series was a fantastic read.

  7. Victor says:

Going to hunt down an Ultimate X #1 2nd print, see what happens.

  8. OC_Guy says:

Received some books that I sent to CBCS a couple of months ago. The highlights are Jimmy Olsen #134: Was hoping for an 8.0 but it got a 7.5. Marvel Premiere #15: Expected a 7.5 and that is what it got. Shazam #28: Was hoping for a 9.0 and it came back a 9.2. Overall not too bad.

  9. Corey Sexton says:

    Slow week for me.
    TMNT 68
    Renew your vows #5
    Spider-Gwen #18

  10. emiobeg says:

  11. I haven’t had much time to read lately. The stack is growing and growing. I need to cut out some time soon!

Batman ’66 meets Wonder Woman ’77
    Loose Ends #3
    Ringside #9
    Tales From the Crypt #2
Violent Love #5 I love the art from this book
Spirit #2 Love me some Francavilla

    • Anthony says:

I think I have double signed Violent Love #1’s.

      Sent from my iPhone

    • I hear ya. I’ve been gobbling up cheap wolverine lots on ebay by placing $0.99 bids on auctions with 5-7 days remaining. Some of the auctions just ride out for a week with one bid. I have a stack as tall as my new puppy! And both are growing!

      • ha, We had a small change in our life that affected my hours of comic reading. (I used to get 2 to 3 hours one day a week when my wife took the kids to piano practice). Now I just try to fit in what I can and it’s not working so well for me.

  12. comicevents says:

Waiting for me at my main LCS today is
Heathen #2 (Cover A Tess Fowler)
Iron Fist #1 (Alex Ross Variant Cover)
Magdalena #1 (Cover B Roberta Ingranata Women’s History Month Variant)
Loose Ends #3 (Of 4)(Cover B Chris Brunner & Rico Renzi)
Suicide Squad #14 (Cover B Lee Bermejo)
Rebels These Free and Independent States #1 (Of 8)

  13. schweizerdavid says:

Descender 20 (getting bored with this)
    Spread 20

I just realized I’ve spent three weekends, 8 hours a day, and a month’s worth of comic money on bags/boards/tape to get ready for this weekend’s local comic swap in Portland, OR.

    • I think I need to set up a “comic swap” locally.

      • Anthony says:

I have been talking about doing a swap meet for comics with the local comic shop that now no longer has my business due to price gouging. We were setting something up.

      • schweizerdavid says:

This is at an Eagle’s Lodge who is renting out the space to the coordinator of the swap. I’ll bet you that you could find a deal on renting space from any number of groups like this. Often times, they have the tables and chairs already too as part of the rental. This particular Lodge is struggling to bring in new members, so there is the added benefit of the attention they get from renting the space. It is also cool that there is an old school bar attached to the space run by the Eagles.

    • Brennan says:

The trick is to board and bag when you get them and then tape after reading but before putting them away (duh to that last part). my problem is that I just pile them up for a while because I can’t be bothered to unstack my long boxes every week. Then it takes hours to put them in the correct spots!
My plan is that when I move, I will be buying shelving that fits about 16 short boxes each and have a box or two per letter of the alphabet, with the extra boxes dedicated to my bigger collections (batman/detective, superman/action, deadpool and spiderman)

      • Books enter my life bagged and boarded but untaped. I have three magazine files as “to read” piles on my bookshelf. I read, set aside to “file”, tape and file under the name of the primary character of the book (or series name for indies and events).

I just can’t stand having things out of order….ever. Even my “to read” pile is organized alphabetically and then by in-universe chronology. It’s a complex, I swear.

On another note, does it ever bug you when people tape things horizontally? Sometimes I get a book second-hand and it’s taped horizontally. Inevitably, you end up with the tape slicing itself in half due to the strain from separating the plastic and then you have two strips of scotch tape that is damn near impossible to scrape off the back of your bags. GOD!

        Ok. Rant over.

      • Anthony says:

Wooky has a nice looking collection by the way. Very fancy display.

      • Pish posh, Tony. It’s flash over substance!

      • schweizerdavid says:

I bag and board as I go now too, but most of this collection is from before learning this lesson. About 30 short boxes worth. I’ve got about 12 short boxes flagged as going with me to the swap. Four $1 boxes, four boxes of sets of books, and four boxes of keys/spec. I have a feeling that the sets will not sell well as most people are looking for individual books, while sellers want to sell multiple books at one time. This swap also tends to be lower priced collections of books of people wanting to get out of the hobby. I don’t know if I will have a market for some of my higher end books/sets (like a complete set of NYX with a minty raw #3 or a set of Preacher 1-12 minus #8 for some reason or my BA12 CBCS 9.6)

      • Brennan says:

I hate when the bags are double taped. One piece in the middle works just fine thank you very much. To each their own I guess!

      • Vann says:

No tape…..ever. Each and every book is double boarded….

      • I always end up taking an hour and sorting my books so that I can put them in the correct long boxes. I need to be better about it, but you’re right, taking the long boxes out constantly is a pain.

I started using the resealable bags. It’s so much easier than dealing with the tape.

      • Anthony says:

I hate pulling the strips off especially when it pulls the self stick off.

      • I’ve had decent luck with them so far. My wife hates that she finds the little strips all over the house however.

      • Anthony says:

Lol. Yes the strips get everywhere. Especially with their static electricity.

  14. Brennan says:

My LCS somewhat recently bought a rather large collection from an estate and has been selling off the keys. Prices were basically what they’ve been selling for on eBay plus shipping, so no real incentive to buy. Basically nothing I want at a price I want to pay.
Well I guess they’ve finally finished going through them all because my shop now has a dollar bin! Lol
Found X Force #4. 3rd appearance of Deadpool :p So now I have #1 with Deadpool card still I’m the bag, #2 and #4. All I need now is New Mutants #98. I asked for it as my wedding gift from my wife. That or the Grizzly Shark #3 page 19 original page, which I notice has been out on hold by someone since I sent her the link…..

  15. Lonzilla says:

Had an excellent hunting day over the weekend. Found a Seven To Eternity #1A 1st printing for cover (check the back of the stack of new books on those Image store display racks!),
    New Mutants #87 in high 9.4- maybe 9.6 for $50, after a press it’s a 9.8 for sure
Invincible Iron Man #7 1st print with Riri cameo in 9.8 for $4, going right to the GCG stack.
6 more copies of New Avengers #8, 4 were cover, 2 were $1. kept the best one, flipped the lot of 5 for $53 so that paid for the NM 87.
Nothing that came out this week caught my eye, didn’t get to hit the LCS when they opened to look for variants, the woman and I were inspecting our new apartment to move in next weekend. Still in Philly, just 5 minutes from where we are now, my hunting spots will stay the same

    • Vann says:

      Jesus—nice finds! I’m very envious.

    • Anthony says:

Remender is going to be in town soon. I am taking my Seven to Eternity 1A to him to sign. Also picked up 10 copies of the Third Eye Variant for Deadly Class for him to sign.

      • Luq says:

Anthony, when and where will Remender be? I’d love to get some stuff signed… love Deadly Class.

      • Anthony says:

April 8th or 9th. Whatever that Saturday is. I have two first print cover A seven to Eternity for the signing and 10 copies of Deadly Class #1 Third Eye Variant. Those will be made available here as raw Signed or graded signed.

    • Luq says:

Damn… I’m a Philly guy too and you’ve apparently got the spots locked down.

      • Anthony says:

Yes sir. My LCS rules. Luq we are only a few hours down. I will be there to CBCS witness and there will be a Cgc witness as well.

  16. JayClue says:

Jeff Lemire and Ray Fawkes were doing signings at my LCS today. I got Lemire to sign my OML #1, Moonknight #1, Black Hammer #1B and a Extra X-Men #1. I don’t really like signatures, I would never pay for one. But the guys were nice so I went ahead and had the books signed. When I left the shop, I kinda felt like I ruined my comics. lol. They are all in the PC, so I’m going to just enjoy the books and the memory they represent. My first adult conversation with a legit comic creator.

  18. A. King says:

Had to get some tires today, so no time to hit the shop. Will be getting to a couple tomorrow.

  19. Richard Sean says:

A very light week for me.

    Got a copy of
    Elektra 2 1:25 variant
And She Wolf – Women’s History Variant

But tomorrow is my day off. So I’m planning on checking out a used book store that has a bunch of comics down in my area. Been meaning to but been lazy. So hoping to find something there.

  20. Richard Sean says:

Anyone see the news that Sony is planning a spinoff movie for Blackcat and Silver Sable?

I’m not too familiar with any of their comics, but for those who are. Any issues out there that you can suggest to pick up before they start heating up? That’s if they do heat up, still not sure if Sony can do a good job with this.

  21. taylor cook says:

I had some luck hitting a shop a little outside my normal range. They order a large volume of books, but their shelves are hell on recent back issues. Still, I managed to find, in fabulous condition, for cover or less:
    2x God country 1 2nd print
    2x totally awesome hulk 3
    New avengers 8

I also grabbed the 1:10 iron fist 1 from them. I read the bleeding cool review of the iron fist show this morning, and instantly regretted giving their website traffic. Aside from actually being a fan of iron fist, I really liked the Mike Perkins cover.

I also ordered the store variants of iron fist from hall of comics. I sold off some of the hulk 1 Ed McGuinness variants I bought from them, and about quadrupled my money. The sets were mentioned on cbsi, and that pushed them even higher. The homage covers they’re doing are awesome, and I wanted to show support for those guys.

I just picked up my subs from my local shop, but I did grab a Batman New 52 1 Ethan van scriver variant for $60. I’ve been looking to pick up #1 for a while and was in the right place at the right time. The book is an easy 9.8. I have a good relation with the main shop guy, and he cut me a mega deal.

Lastly, I sent off my remaining seven to eternity 1’s (3 cover a’s, a b, and a c), my remainder of the aforementioned hulk 1 hall of comics exclusive sets, and a walking dead 100 3rd print to CBCS. I’m on a streak with 9.8’s, so here’s to hoping.

  22. Eric R says:

    Very light week for me:
    The Few #3
Ultimate X #1 (Art Adams foil variant)
    God Country #2 2nd printing X2
    God Country #1 3rd printing

Does anyone know if White #3 from Devils Due shipped? It was supposed to be out this week and none of the stores I visited had any? Next week #4 is supposed to be released and am wondering if anyone knows anything? I really like this series and have been looking forward to the next installment.

    Thanks and happy hunting!

  23. JC says:

It looks like all of the Heathen #2 in my area sold out. I saw a few copies yesterday morning and purchased the most pristine one. Went back to the same store and a few other stores. Sold out! Too bad. I wanted a few copies.

  24. A. King says:

Over the weekend I cleaned out my pullbox. One of the many titles in it was Nailbiter #30, I can’t wait to read it to see how it ends. I finally got to go to a couple shops today and picked up…….
    God Country #1 2nd and 3rd
    White #3
    Preacher #19 and #21
I also got to go by a B.A.M. and a Barnes and Noble, pickups there included……
    Superman #19 newsstand x2
    Super Sons #2 newsstand x2
God Country #1 and #2 still in a bag and board, still in great condition after all this time I couldn’t believe it.
