Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 137th edition of the open forum!
I have about 17 of the pre-order books of the Solar Flare CHU/Baltimore Comic Con Variant left. There is only a 250 copy print run on these and I am keeping half to have sold at Baltimore Comic Con. If you were thinking about getting one, well ahead of them being at Baltimore, grab them now, and thanks to everyone who did, the turn out has been great.
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. Hey everyone. Hope all is well this week!
I’ll be getting slightly less than I usually do and I don’t actually have much time to read them. Packing packing and more packing. I’ll get to them in good time though, one more month and a bit and I get some much needed off time.
The plus side is I bought a couple of good shelving units for the new basement just for short boxes.
    This week I am grabbing:
    Action comics
    Batman/the shadow
    Detective comics
    Hal Jordan
    Hellblazer
    Moon girl and devil dinosaur
    Plastic
    Rapture
    Redneck
    Venom

      1. Yes you did. I liked the concept but ultimately couldn’t find them in Canada for a good price.
I went with shelving that was long but not tall so I can actually get into all the boxes except maybe the ones on the top shelf.
        Compromises had to be made.

        1. I ordered 10 at first and then went back and ordered 10 more. They look nice and made shelving on top on their own. I have some shelving down there too but only with a couple of boxes in there. Reminds me I need to do a clean up and sell a ton of stuff. Maybe a .99 cent blow out in my future.

      2. If you send me a list of what either you or Poyo have for sale in this .99 sale, I will probably take a TON off of you both so you wouldn’t have to do a garage sale type thing…just saying!! No dickering with me either and one place to send it all, as I’m in Terre Haute, IN….

    1. I don’t need more shelving or boxes, I need more house.. 🙁
Like Anthony said, I need to do another big 99 cent blow out sale. I might be doing a huge craigslist sale maybe as well. Go back down to just the valuable books I intend to keep (the ones that are in mylar bags or graded) and start all over again with a new cycle. I gots way too many books cluttering up my closet and rooms now.

      1. Yeah I’m not quite there yet. Give me a few more years though (or a toddler, whichever comes first). I figure I’ll sell off as much as I can as sets. I have more than one of the newer key issues and anything I love enough to want to reread I get in tpb as well so it’s not like I’ll lose out. I mean, other than all of the money I spent. That’s gone forever.

        1. Can’t take your money with you when you die…. Might as well spend it while your alive 😉

      2. If you send me a list of what either you or Tony have for sale in this .99 sale, I will probably take a TON off of you both so you wouldn’t have to do a garage sale type thing…just saying!! No dickering with me either and one place to send it all, as I’m in Terre Haute, IN….

  2. This weeks pick ups…
    Fantastic Four #44, #46 1st Gordon 1st full Blackbolt.
    Robin #126 1st Stephanie Brown
Have a good write up this week I’m submitting early stay tuned

      1. Will get it on tonight. Had baseball last night and again tonight. We have a tournament all week end, and trying to buy a new car to boot. So tired. Also have Shawn B.’s one year later coming up today.

  3. Can anyone clarify when the first appearance of Stephanie Brown occurred. Was it Detective #647 or Robin #126?

    1. Det 647 was first appearance. First appearance as Robin, as stated in Adam’s post was Robin 126. Her first appearance as Spoiler was Det 648

  4. Been a while since I posted but I’ll be grabbing:
Seven To Eternity both Spawn covers
    Redneck
Plastic both Spawn covers (Loved the first issue. This twisted story is right up my alley.)
    Samaritan
Normals Regular cover (LCS didn’t get the variant)
    Shaolin Cowboy Frank Cho Cover
    Destroyer Cover A
    Divinica
    Wonder Woman Jenny Frison Cover
    Batman/The Shadow Regular Cover
LCS didn’t get the Venom Dell’Otto Variant but I’m sure I’ll be able to find one on eBay for cheap soon enough.

  5. I ended up grabbing today:
    Plastic #1 (2nd print)
    Plastic #2 (Cover A)
Plastic #2 (Spawn cover-ordered online as none of my comic shops had any Spawn covers for either Plastic or Seven to Eternity #6)
    Redneck #1 (2nd print)
    Redneck #2
    For the PC this week,
Graphitti Designs The Crow Hardcover Slipcase Signed and Numbered by O’Barr. Comes with CD of O’Barr’s music. Very stoked! I’ve always wanted one of these and now my hardcover collection is rounding out nicely!

  6. What are the prices that people are seeing at their LCS’ for the Dell Otto 1:25 Venom 150? Stores around me are asking about $30-$35 CDN.

  7. I still have to make my way out to the LCS today but Im looking to pick up
Justice League of America #7 (I may end up dropping this from my pull-list depending on this issue)
    Redneck #2
    Seven to Eternity #6
    Samaritan #1
Shaolin Cowboy #2 that Frank Cho cover is something else lol
So a pretty light week so far, it’ll probably change once I actually get into the store and I end up walking out with like 10 comics or something haha.
Anyhow what are some of your guys’ favorite current comic reads right now?

      1. Hm havent read either Beauty or BEK….and wait God Country finishes next month with issue 6….or did you already get a sneak peek at it?

    1. Some of my current favorite reads are (the ones that are ongoing and likely won’t get dropped until they’re done):
      Walking Dead
      Saga
Moon Knight (Until the next volume but even the last volume was great)
      Black Hammer
      Seven To Eternity
      Black Science
      Paper Girls
      X-O Manowar

      1. I need to catch back up on Paper Girls. I stopped buying them after like issue 8 or 9 because I went on vacation and totally forgot about it. Now I cant seem to find them in back issues anywhere local.

    2. There are a lot of really good books out there that I’m following on a consistent basis:
      Killed or Be Killed
Walking Dead (can’t believe I’ve been reading this since #1)
      Hillbilly
Star Wars (especially main title and Darth Vader)
      God Country

      1. I envy you two. Being able to read since #1. Hope you guys still have your #1s as well. I’ve been wanting to jump in but i don’t know where to start. As i follow based off the show. I don’t want to buy volumes or any thing like that either. Trying to cut back on my spending on comics, which already is difficult enough haha

        1. Yes. Have not sold any of my single copies of Walking Dead. I have sold duplicates of other issues, but have a full walking dead run.

      2. I have every issue of Walking Dead still in my collection from #1-current. I remember I saw an article in Wizard Magazine about this new series. Having been a rabid George Romero fan since I was 12, I had to go and get this! At the time, other than DeadworId from Caliber Press, there weren’t any books like this. I was able to buy #3-#7 off the shelf from a local comic store and paid the outrageous sum of $25 for 1 & 2 1st printing at the next comic con. It is really a testament to Kirkman and his vision and the way he keeps me coming back each month. Always at the top of my reading list. I can’t believe that I’ve spent this much time with Rick and his group!

        1. I was a Deadworld reader as well as a Night of the Living Dead reader too. I loved zombies so this was a natural fit for me.

        2. I bought 2-4 from Robert Kirkman’s table at Baltimore Comic Con for $5 each. My LCS got Issue 1 in and no one bought it but me. They stopped ordering it.

    3. I’ve really enjoyed Hillbilly and Animosity. I just read issue 1 & 2 of Eleanor and the Egret and quite enjoyed them too. Peepland was also a good mini that had an awesome twist at the end.

    1. I have my eye on the Vampi. The signed Secret Empire sold out so quick I didn’t get one. They have issue 2 available signed but I figured what is the point of only getting issue 2 without issue 1

      1. Yeah, all i was able to order was #2 but I don’t have a signed Spencer book so I had to grab it.

  14. A nice quiet week. My pick ups were:
    Venom #150, reg and 1:25 Dell’Otto
    All Star Batman #10C
    JLA #7
    Action Comics Harley cover B
    Redneck #2
    Death be Damned #4
    Plastic #2
Seven To Eternity #6 all covers and 3x the spawn B&W
    DC Rebirth 1st print $5

  15. My pick-ups form this week’s crop of books…
    Action B
Batgirl B (may be done after this issue)
Blue Beetle B (just for the cover!)
    Deathstroke B
    Detective A
Suicide Squad A (tough choice between covers)
    All New Guardians variant
Ben Reilly The Scarlet Spider variant
    Cap America
    Jean Grey variant
Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur variant (not in pristine shape, but cover price – only one I could find out of 4 shops; the reg. cover was in short supply too so I gave up my copy to another customer)
Totally Awesome Hulk (a sell-out at my reg. LCS)
    Black Hammer B
    Plastic A
    Redneck 1 (2nd print)
Redneck 2 (can’t wait to read!)
Seven to Eternity (Spawn color and Black & White) x 2 – all that I could find
Normals variant (again, only one available out of 4 shops, but pristine!)
    From prior weeks’…
    Royals 3 (McGuiness variant)
    Spider-Gwen 18 (Venomized variant)
WW 77 Meets Bionic Woman 4 (Cat Staggs virgin variant)
Luke Cage 1:15 (I think) variant
I could not score an Elektra variant or a Dell Otto Venom variant…uugghh! Also, the Black Panther and Secret Warriors 1:25 variants I was offered were damaged, so I passed. It really stinks when the limited variants are banged up.

  16. Hell of a week for finds! Got my 1st ever copy of Y The Last Man #1 today at a thrift store for $1. Looks high 9.2 to a low 9.4, getting it pressed, slabbed and waiting for the TV show.
    ASM 601, 606, 607, 611 – $3.25 ea
    Captain Marvel 14, 17 1st prints – $3.25
    X-Men Sword Of The Braddocks – $4.25
    X-Factor 5, 24 $1 ea
and for the PC because I love love LOVE me some pre-code horrors:
    Tales From The Crypt #43
    Tomb Of Terror #4
    Weird Fantasy #6
    Weird Fantasy #18
The PCH bug can get very expensive, even the low to low-mid grade books are seeing some crazy bidding action.
People are finally realizing that there’s not a ton of those books readily available and when collectors buy them, they usually keep them for good.
