By Shawn B. the One Year Later Investigator
What up CHUbaccas!?! Shawn B. back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today. Very tough week for the guys!
Mel was on a beach somewhere this week last year and did not make any picks……..how dare he!!! Good news is we get a first appearance here from DrunkWooky. And by the way I will be on a beach somewhere next week. I will still try and get one of these out but no promises.
Winners
Amazing Spider-Man #15 – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $6
Alex Ross cover. First Iron Spider II. Slow burn.
Near Misses
Walking Dead #156 – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Still available at Midtown.
Value on this has jumped around but is low right now. Still could be considered a key issue and one to hold on to. I mean it’s TWD. Give it another year.
Amazing Spider-Man #15 David Lopez Death of X Variant – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4-6
Sold out at retailers. First appearance of Iron Spider II so there are still legs under this one for now. X-23 is popular so it is surprising this didn’t catch on more.
Solarman #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Not much for recent sales. Sold out at retailers. EBay has this going for $2-15.
This one has been optioned and there is no telling what the future holds. I’d say hang onto this for a while to see what happens. That being said it was selling consistently for $9-10 back in the beginning of this year. Tough one to figure our where to place on the list since it was a great quick flip.
Misses
Poe Dameron #4 David Aja Variant – DrunkWooky Pick
Original Value: $15 Current Value: No recent sales. For sale on eBay from $10-20
It is a cool cover but my goodness how many Star Wars variants can be out there?
Punisher #3 Becky Cloonan Variant – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $25 Current Value: Still available at Midtown at a high price and selling for $5-10 on eBay.
If you got this originally at a lower price like most, you could have made a little off a quick flip.
Han Solo #2 Tula Lotay Variant – DrunkWooky Pick
Original Value: $25 Current Value: Still available at most on line stores. eBay has copies for sale under $10.
Hot artist but not enough to be one of the few Star Wars variants to remain hot.
Kim & Kim #1 – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Still available at Midtown. Copies on eBay going for below cover.
Personally I jumped off the Black Mask band wagon a while back. Might be a while before we see another WCNGH or Space Riders!

Always love reading these posts Shawn—keep up the good work! FYI You are showing the 2nd print copy of ASM #15—but I’m sure everyone knows which book you mean. It surprises me that this cover fell off so fast and so much….as well as the variant.
Some of the other books are surprising in their low prices too—that Han Solo has the look that it could turn into an iconic cover….
Thanks Vann. You’re right it should be the cover with the red lettering I think. I was really surprised at all the low prices for this week as well.
Wow, I made out worse in my first appearance than the Kangaroo!
Hold hat ASM I’m pretty sure Iron Jane is getting her own series soon!!
The Ross cover would of done better in the past if it wasn’t competing with the JSC store variant.
Very true I think. I have little concern about future value….if I didn’t have so many now, I would be picking more up.
I picked up a ton of the ASM 15 iron Janes too. I made some decent profit around the time the book came out and am now sitting on the 7-8 copies I have left. Ditto for TWD 156.
CHUbaccas good one ?
One lesson is the difficulty of picking hot comics. Out of the top 5% or more of new comics, majority don’t increase in price until years later.
I sold my solarman copies for $15 each when they where hot. The Poe Dameron cover is sick. I bought it for my little one.
When everyone jumps off the bandwagon, it only makes future hits even bigger,,,thanks Shawn B. for getting out of the way…I think you might want to abandon Scout too.
Can I rescind my pick of Kim&Kim? That book was awful…. Just forget it ever happened please.
I forgive you. I gave it a shot. It felt like the plot was not only being spoon fed to me, but force fed. Just terrible.
If people want more diverse characters in comics, they need to write them better.
I can’t believe it’s already been a year since that Alex Ross Mary Jane cover! Time flies! I don’t read Iron Man anymore… is Mary Jane still appearing in that book or has she vanished from Marvel’s entire slate again? (except, of course, for the slew of Variant Covers last month…)
The only one I spec’ed on was TWD #156.
