Mighty Thor 700 to have Adam Hughes 1:100 Variant Plus Marvel’s Biggest Week In October

the week of October 18th 2017 will be possibly the biggest week for Marvel comics in a while. Not only are they putting out Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk in one week, but they will have a special issue of Thor, Mighty Thor #700 featuring a 1:100 Thor cover by legendary cover artist Adam Hughes.

Not only that, but the story is entitled, “Death of Mighty Thor Part 1”
So what is in store for the 700th issue?

Seems that Mangog has arrived to bring final judgement. War Thor will battle him. Jane’s cancer takes a turn for the worst. No hammer can see her this time as the clock ticks down. “It’s the beginning of the end that will lead to the most dramatic return in the Marvel Universe!”

Of course, no cover art is shown in Diamond yet.

  1. Brian Springman says:

They’re doing a second 1:100 variant as well. A b/w variant by Dauterman.

Store variants will water down the Hughes variant a little since they can be used as qualifiers.

    • Anthony says:

I wonder if anyone is doing a store variant.

      • agentpoyo says:

        Do I smell a CHU variant? πŸ™‚

      • Anthony says:

        No. No you don’t.

      • agentpoyo says:

Hehe. But you love Marvel.. πŸ™‚

      • Anthony says:

I do. I sell Marvel because others like it. I like anything I can make money off. Grew up a Marvel kid though. Loved Marvel comics and was a legacy collector. Now with $3.99 price tags and shit cover stock I don’t mess with them any more.

      • agentpoyo says:

Yeah, I wish their cover stock was better but one has to think, they’re printing 100 times more than most other publishers and almost every book comes with a digital version as well, so using thinner covers keeps their costs down and keeps our costs down.

Anyone notice that DC is now starting to introduce free digital versions now at the $3.99 price tag? They use to charge $4.99.. but their $2.99 price tag for non digital versions does save one money if they’re not keen on redeeming…

      • (IDK where this will land, but I was trying to respond to Poyo’s last comment; not sure why each person’s response doesn’t have it’s own “reply” button.)
The way DC is handling their digital codes now is that you only get them with the once-per-month $3.99 core titles. The twice-per-month books are still $2.99 and don’t have a digital copy. So there is no choice about whether to go with a physical only copy at $2.99 or a physical + digital copy for $3.99. It is pre-set. Right now I think the only books I personally buy that come with a digital copy are All-Star Batman, Hellblazer, & Red Hood and the Outlaws.

    • Alana says:

Did you know a book with a used digital download can only grade as high as a 9.4.

      • Is this really true? Is it primarily due to the sticker being removed, or the fact that the code has been used? Since the codes expire within 1 year, that would be a moot point in the future. As for the sticker, I have actually always lifted the sticker halfway to view the code, then flattened it back down, so my stickers are still intact, just half peeled-off. And some of them end up stuck back on there.

I’ve noticed some sellers on eBay who regularly sell brand new titles with the stickers already used. So I do have some with the stickers gone in my collection. I assume they are selling the codes separately from the books to make extra money, but with titles that Just Came Out, it is rude that they don’t mention it in their listings.

      • Anthony says:

Well. If they don’t mention it and you don’t care. No it’s all good. But if they don’t mention it and it does bother you then yes, it’s a pretty big deal to not note a defect that changed the grade of the book.

      • agentpoyo says:

That’s crappy if true, first I heard of this as well. Honestly I think it should not be counted in the grading process since the intent is for removal, just like if the comic came poly-bagged. If they knock that many points off a grade cause someone removed something originally on it that’s intended to be removed, then they need to do the same for any comic that came poly-bagged, since one is essentially “altering the comic from it’s original release.”

The actual sticker I think is high enough when not removed, over time, it’s going to leave an imprint on the page it’s pressed up against if pressed or sandwiched long enough in a long box, thus damaging the book more.

I redeem my marvel codes though. I like being able to read digitally, anytime and anyplace and removing the sticker makes the redeem page flatter for long term storage. But then again, none of my Marvel books are likely gonna go off and get graded either. I like my comics raw for the most part.

      • Yeah, I personally have no intention of owning CGC graded books in my PC. And it’s kind of funny looking at people who collect CGC graded books, it’s gone from trying to protect the comic book to trying to protect the Slab. They need to keep the plastic case from getting scuffed up, lol. So backwards to me!

      • agentpoyo says:

I have a few CGC but I go with CBCS if I’m sending off myself.

I can understand those who do collect slabbed books, nothing worse when trying to view the book and it’s all scuffed up on the slab, etc. But I know what you mean.. some it seems are buying the slab, not the book. Buy the book, not the slab. Same concept was always brought up when I collected coins (which I avoided slabs) cause it always seemed some collectors were buying the slabs, not the coins.

      • Alana says:

According to the owner of PGX when asked he said the highest it can grade is 9.4.

      • Alana says:

I think your ok if the sticker is still attached even if you redeemed it and made it look un tampered.

  2. Stanley says:

When Jane became Thor, wasn’t the plan to return original Thor eventually? But jane Thor lasted longer than expected. Probably among the best selling female hero for Marvel. Outselling Spider Gwen, Captain Marvel, Gwenpool, Ms Marvel and Silk.

    • agentpoyo says:

I think we can also contribute Jason Aaron as the writer for that as well. He’s probably a top ten writer in my opinion currently.

Spider-Gwen and Gwenpool or gimmicky cash grabs to me anyways.. they should be outsold by the other major Marvel female characters. I don’t take their characters as serious as the other ones as Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel and Silk I think play bigger and more important roles in the Marvel Universe.

  3. Karl El De May says:

Do you know where I can get a copy of that?

Ive pre-ordered all the available variants on forbidden planet but the don’t have the 1:100….

    • agentpoyo says:

You likely can’t pre-order it until shops know they’re getting them. Usually about a week ahead shops might start listing the ratio variants that are allocated based on the number of books they order, etc.

  4. Alana says:

The lenticular cover is a swap of the Death of Captain Marvel graphic novel. Don’t care for incentive books if the reg cover is lenticular. I rather have the Lenticulars.
