One Year Later: Spec Review for 9/7/16

What up CHUlupa Batmans!?! (5 Cool Points to anyone who gets that reference) Shawn B. back, the One Year Later Investigator, with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.

Silk #12 Cosplay Variant Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $10 Current Value: ?
No recent sales to back up my claim that this is a winner. But it is sold out at on-line retailers and I can’t find a copy for sale for under $25. This was also a quick flip winner going for as much as $40 after release.

Animosity #1 2nd Print – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $15
This may be the hardest to find reprint of the first issue of this successful series.

Near Misses

Doctor Strange #11 Incentive Adam Hughes Variant Cover – Mel & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $50 Current Value: $50
Still quite a bit of activity on this one a year later. Solid Adam Hughes work. Future potential?

Daredevil #11 Variant Alex Maleev Defenders Cover – Mel & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still plenty available
I agree this is still a fitting dark cover for Daredevil.

Harley Quinn #3 Variant Bill Sienkiewicz Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still plenty available
Sienkiewicz covers tend to heat up quickly, drop back down and then slowly simmer for a while after. His style is so unique and brings such a fresh look compared to what we are used to.

Thin #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at on-line retailers
This one was sold out for a small time and could have made a few bucks on a quick flip for a short while after release. (Editors Note – A thank you to Me and CHU are in the book – Anthony)

Unspecced Winners – No Unspecced Winners from this week a year ago.

I sold my copy of that Silk Cosplay cover for $30 when it first came out. I think this book are in the hands are people who will keep it in their PC is probably why you don’t see much activity online.

I flipped the Silk and Scarlet Witch cosplay variants. I’m surprised it’s that hard to find. I didn’t like any of these variants, but to each their own.

  6. Shines says:

Could never find the Silk cosplay. I must say that the SILK logo is terrible.
