Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 157th edition of the open forum!

As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

    1. Anthony was/is sick without a voice, that’s the reason he didn’t post a new spec review video this week.

    1. It’s working. Poyo published it before the 8 o’clock eastern (12 PM London Time) deadline. It was pulled and scheduled for the right time.

  1. I feel bad for everyone without power in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. We had a 12hr power outage island wide last night it was so hot with no fans or AC and made this morning a real pain to get the kid to school. Can only imagine the nightmare of going weeks and months without power.

    1. A few years ago we had a big ice storm that left me without power for 2. 1/2 days in the middle of a Canadian winter. I’ll tell you, the prospect of freezing to death (that’s not going to happen), or having the pipes freeze up and break, or the toilet bowl freezing over is not much fun either. It surely makes you realize just how dependant we are on these modern conveniencess. A big solar Flare is a truly horrifying thought.

      1. Oh man did that SUCK! It was three days for me!
I would sleep by the fireplace, watch dvd’s until my laptop would die then in the morning drive over to my parents place to shower and charge my laptop.
Got the power back at around 9pm Christmas eve. Now that was a Christmas miracle!

  2. I believe tomorrow represents the first anniversary of my return to comic book collecting. The pull list is a lot longer a year later.

  3. Nothing for me this week. I did however got my Dark Ark #1 Templesmith variant in the mail this past weekend. Looks really clean. Specially the virgin cover.

  4. Still a large week for me and I’m working really hard at trimming the fat. I am slowly dropping the titles that I find I am lacing at the bottom of the pile to read last, after I’ve caught up on my growing pile.
    This week I am getting:
    Action Comics #990 – Lenticular
    Batman: The Merciless
    Bloodshot: Salvation #2
    Detective Comics #967
    Image+ #3
    Nightwing: The New Order #3
    Outcast #31
    Thanos #12
    The Amazing Spider-Man #790
    The Despicable Deadpool #288
    The Flash #33
    The Hellblazer #15

  5. Picking up this week:
    Saga 48
    Rick & Morty 31
    Note:
I talked a little bit last week about a book for which I was put on a wait list at a store with an online presence. I was told by the store that the person who put the book on layaway was late on payments but if I wanted to front the 15% retail restocking fee, that I could speed up the process. I thought it was a bit shady. That book was an underground comic, Funnybook 1.
Later that day, I went to my lcs and struck up a conversation with an older, fellow bin digger. I asked him what he collected and told him that I was currently looking for a copy of Funnybook 1, the first appearance of Larry Welz’s Cherry Poptart, and Real Pulp Comics 1, the first appearance of Zippy the Pinhead with an early pre-Maus story by Art Spiegelman. He told me that he thought he had them in a box in his closet since he bought a lot of underground comics in the early ’70’s from head shops at cover price. He was also at the stage in collecting where he was not adverse to selling some books.
He called me later and set up a time to meet up the next day. I ended up buying both books and a copy of Real Pulp Comics 2 was thrown in the deal. He told me a story about how he had slowly been sending books like the first 36 issues of Spider-man to Heritage Auctions to sell but that he had no idea what undergrounds were going for. I saw on his list that he had Zap 0 and Zap 1 among others.
Moral of the story is to take the time to talk to your fellow collectors, particularly those older than you. They tend to have stories to tell and maybe some books to sell or trade. I took my name off the wait-list at the online store.

    1. BTW, the Real Pulp Comics 1 is a criminally undervalued book. GoCollect has only one recorded slabbed sale of an 8.5 for $19.99. Raw copies can be found for under $10.
      – 1971 underground comic
      – first appearance of Zippy the Pinhead by Bill Griffith
      – pre-Maus story by Art Spiegelman
      – cover that checks off all of the boxes
      interesting pose
      damsel in distress
      devil/demon
      spaceship
      tentacled monster
      bare-chested swashbuckler
      headlights
      – edited by Roger Brand (assistant to Gil Kane & Wally Wood)
If someone would post a picture of the cover, it would be appreciated.

    2. That’s an awesome story. It sounds like you ‘willed’ the book to come into your life. I have found, in the 3 years I’ve been back collecting, if you keep your eyes and ears open that any book you are looking for will come to you. No need to pay outrageous feebay prices.

      1. Yes. I ended up with a one-owner copy of the book 75% cheaper than the one at which I was originally looking.

  6. My shops books were delayed today.. due to a broken down UPS truck. Sigh.
So I found a recalled copy of Kid Lobotomy Gold Variant sitting on the back issue shelves behind a few other #1 regular covers. Score, it’s already listed too, since the prices are dropping fast on this one it seems.
Also found a Invincible Iron Man 593 Kirby T-Shirt variant as well sitting on back issue shelf.
Picked up some Star Wars Adventure’s RI covers as well. One rang up as $0.00 and the employee was like.. oh well.
So not a bad day despite not picking up the few books I did intend on picking up. Hopefully the sale of the Kid Lobotomy and Iron Man variants will cover the cost of all 4 of the books I bought this morning and the 3-4 I probably pick up later today after their books are put out on the shelves.

    1. I love that $0 ring up.
When my shop switched systems, sometimes a book wouldn’t scan and the staff would be like “just take it”.
      Ah, I miss those days.

  7. Slow but good week for me. My pick ups were:
    Flash #33 A&B
    Merciless #1 x2
    Weapon X #11
    ASM #790, regular cover
    Detective Comics #967
    Thanos #12
    Action Comics #990 Lenticular
    Spawn #279 McFarlane TWD Variant
    JLA #14, #15, #17
I also bought a 1st print Watchmen #1 from 1986. Real clean copy. The front looks like a 9.6, and there is 1-2 small tics on the all black back cover. One of my LCS’ bought a collection about 6 months ago. In that collection I came across a complete set of Watchmen. He wanted $50 for issue #1 alone, asking price, which I thought was a bit high at the time. So, went in today, found the set still in the back issue bins, and haggled a bit and walked out with the book for about $28 US. I’m happy. He is also going to hold the rest of the series and I’m going to pick up 1 issue every Wednesday for the next 11 weeks, in order to complete the set. Very much looking forward to owning this set. Also grabbed a clean copy of Marvel Team-Up feat. Spidey and FF #100, 1st Karma, supposed to show up in New Mutants sequel, for $6 NM.

  8. Slower week for me….
    Metal 1 shot
    Flash Metal tie in A/B

    Back issues….

Lois and Clark 1 and 8
    Sandman 69
Started a comic box for my 4 year old son. Going to pick up monthly issues of Batman, Spider-man and Wonder Woman for him to read once he’s older and can keep from ripping them. Started those this week.

      1. Yes, you are correct, thank you! I think he will appreciate it more in the long run than my wallet, but I look forward to the day I give him his box.

  9. I’m predicting Jughead The Hunger to be a winner this week. A Covers still available on e-bay at/below cover, but I can’t find it in online shops anymore. This will probably be good for a quick flip a’la Afterlife.

Feel better Anthony. It’s not the same when we don’t have the comics spec video that I watch every week.
    Good hunting everyone.

  12. This turned out to be a heavy week for me as I recently really pared down my subs. All of my Marvel books came in the same week.
    Bloodshot Salvation #2 Pre-Order Edition
    Eternity #1 Pre-Order Edition.
Eternity #1 I had to get this as the regular cover is awesome, flat black, with great art. So bummed that the Pre-Order Edition cover is relatively lame.

    All-New Wolverine #26
The Punisher #17 – Hope this series starts getting better soon.
