Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)

We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

The 170th edition of the open forum!

As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

I’m dropping Southern Bastards. The delays are killing me. I’ll likely just switch to trade moving forward. This was one of those series I wanted to collect singles issues for but its just no longer doing it for me anymore, especially with most issues having two covers.

    • Brennan says:

I dropped it ages ago. It was SOOOOOO BORING!!!!
It could never really decide who the main character is either. Like, I get invested in Earl only to have the focus shift to coach and then some blind dude and then a girl we just met. Like, seriously Jason A-A-Ron, make up your mind.

  2. SMH says:

Plan on getting the below for tomorrow.

    PullList:
    Doomsday Clock
    Nightwing New Order #6
    Teen Titans #16
Wonder Woman #39 (Frison variant only)
    Gasolina #5
    Redneck #9
    Thanos #15
Marvel 2 in 1: Cover A, and Few Dell Ottos

Probably also grab Teen Titans #12 2nd print (wish they would have done new cover with the delay in getting the second print)
Avengers No Surrender Esad Ribic variant
    Avengers #677 Bill Sienkiewicz variant
    Batgirl #19 Middleton variant

  3. Lonzilla says:

No great finds for me in the last couple of weeks. I guess with the economy doing well people aren’t dumping off collections at the LCS’s.
Was organizing my disorganized stash boxes and found Ultimates #1 1:50 Art Adams variant I bought last year and forgot about, so that’s nice.
    Picking up:
    Thanos
    TT 2nd print
    Legion Sienkiewicz variant

  4. Dave says:

Been noticing the other comics in the Gotham resistance storyline have increased in value (2-3 times cover) as well. Expect TT12 2nd print to catch people off guard…good luck finding them on shelves!

    • JayClue says:

All the Metal Tie Ins (Gotham Resistance, Bats out of Hell) have been doing well for a few weeks now.

  5. Stephen says:

I’ve got Redneck at the top of my read pile, and Avengers 676 1:25 on my spec list. 1:25 with Voyager on the cover.

  6. First time in a long time that I am actually picking up a stack of books for the week. Some old favorites are coming back.

    Picking up:
    Monstress 13
    Sex Criminals 21 both covers
    Southern Bastards 21
    Invader Zim 27

    Maybe:
Legion 1 (best new show last year, hands down better than Gifted)

    • schweizerdavid says:

Also spent my Christmas Powell’s bookstore gift card on the first two trades of Gilbert Hernandez’s Love and Rockets Palomar story: Heartbreak Soup & Human Diastrophism.

    • Brennan says:

I don’t know if hands down is fair…. I mean it was good, but hands down better than gifted???
Gifted doesn’t need to have an explainer episode every third episode just so you know what’s actually going on!
Legion was good, but it was too convoluted and surreal to follow easily.

      • Alana says:

I don’t know I’m partial to Happy! As best new show, followed by Runaways. Didn’t even make it all the way through Legion season 1 and I watch any and all comic tv shows been meaning to try and watch it again though.

      • schweizerdavid says:

I couldn’t get past the first episode of either Gifted or Happy. I wanted to like Happy but when I went back to finish episode 1 on demand, it was no longer there. I will have to see if it was added back in.

To me, Legion was amazing if you gave it a chance. My wife who does not read comics liked it too. Aubrey Plaza was spot on.

      • Brennan says:

Runaways was a huge surprise hit for me. Did not expect to like it and it was Soo good!

      • Lonzilla says:

Legion was amazing, watched the whole series twice and kept seeing things I missed the 1st time around. It’s f**d up for sure!
Happy is just plain hilarious! I seriously spit out my beer during tonight’s episode I was laughing so hard. Won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it yet, just saying that when Nick is bent over, don’t have anything in your mouth

    • schweizerdavid says:

Found a reader copy of Brave and the Bold 76 with Plastic Man that I’ve wanted for a while.

  7. Jonathan hoffman says:

Sooo… Frank Castle is the cosmic Ghost Rider?? That’s Punishing…

  8. Brennan says:

Hey everyone! Hope the weeks been good. I’ve been busy and now I need to pull up a stretch of my basement floor because some a-hole disposed of GROUT in the main drain sometime before I lived there. It’s been causing problems (backed up twice this winter so far) lately and so we had to scope and found it, now it’s going to cost me a small fortune! Sad part is, there is nothing I can do about it because I can’t prove the people we bought from last year knew about it. GRRRRR!

On a more positive note, I had some giftcards so I grabbed a Rick and Morty Portal Gun and the RIck and Ship Funko! I have tried to use the portal gun to get out of some household chores with no luck, if anyone is wondering.

Today I will be picking up:

    Action comics #996
    Detective comics #973
    Doomsday clock #3
    Inhumans judgement day #1
    Jughead the hunger #3
    Justice League of America #23
    Manifest destiny #33
    Nightwing new order #6
    Ninja k #3
    Redneck #9
    Sex criminals #21
    Thanos #15
    Amazing Spider-Man #794
    Flash #39
    Hellblazer #18
    Wild storm #11

    Peace out homies!

  9. Kevin verdine says:

Got me 2 copies of TT 12 2nd print. Last 2 at my LCS. It’s how I spend my lunch time on Wednesday. Hope it heats up

  10. Eric R says:

Hit up four stores in my area on lunch and was able to get the following books:
Avengers 676 (Mark Brooks cover A X 3 for cover)
Thanos 15 (3 copies was all that was was between all the store and I was able to get 2 of those)
Southern Bastards 21-hate the wait between books, but still find the story good so I save up 2-3 issues between readings so that I don’t forget what happened 3 months or more ago
Teen Titans 12 (2nd print)-one copy was all that I could find
    Justice League 23 (cover A and B)

    Good hunting everyone!

  11. JayClue says:

Tried to take it easy today, did alright but still spent too much. Lol. My pick ups today were:

    Readers and PC

ASM #794, Norman gains possession of Carnage Symbiote in this, doesnt bond yet…i can see Red Goblin making his 1st before 797.
    Avengers #677

    Thanos #15
    Doomsday Clock #3
    ASM #252, NM (9.4-9.6), $80 CND
    ASM #370

    Avengers #677 Tedesco Connect
    Flash #33B

    • JayClue says:

Oh yeah, i also found a stack of Avengers #676 at one LCS. Nabbed 2, if they sell i will go grab more.

      • JayClue says:

Ill trade 2-3 copies of Avengers 676 to anyone willing to trade a Tedesco #676. Just throwin it out there.

      • agentpoyo says:

I have two auctions currently of 676…. One is at $12 with about 10 minutes left (time of writing this comment) and the other has like 2 days and its at $10 currently.

      • Alana says:

There’s a 676 Variant ending in auction in an hour already at $30 only one listed. The other that popped up today I got for $18

      • JayClue says:

I am watching the $30 one that ends in 1 hr. There was 1 at my LCS today and the guy wanted $30 CND (about $25 US). I passed on it hoping i could find a cheaper one online. No luck. I think i may go see if the one at the LCS is still avaiable tomorrow. I have the the other connecting covers so i kinda need that one to complete my set.

      • JayClue says:

Offer is off the table! Went and picked up the copy at my LCS.

  12. schweizerdavid says:

Just read that Hellblazer is now 30 years old; issue 1 was January ’88. Picked up a raw copy about a year ago pretty cheaply.

  13. Alana says:

Found a Avengers #676 1:25 that’s all was really looking for this week.

  14. tim says:

    ASM #794
    Avengers #677 (1,000,000 BC)

    Doomsday Clock #3 (Batman)
    Teen Titans #12 (2nd)
    Star Trek Discovery #2(photo)

  15. mybodystory says:

    Doomsday Clock #3B
    Detective Comics #973B
    Invader Zim #27 (both covers)
    Marvel Two-In-One Vol 3 #2B

  16. agentpoyo says:

None of my shops got the Otto variant of Marvel Two In One.

    • JayClue says:

Two shops in my area had the Dell Otto 2 in 1. One shop had it marked up 50% and the other had it marked up 100%. I passed on both. That irks me to no end when a shop marks up an open order book on release day.

  17. Ken M. says:

It looks like Thanos #15 is the hot book this week since it didn’t even make it into my pull (not sure how that happens). No Maestros #4, no Southern Bastards, and no Teen Titans #12 2nd prints (but I think I have some coming in the mail). But I did get most of what I wanted, so here’s the list:

  20. JayClue says:

I just saw the covers for ASM 798 and 799 and the Green Goblin appears on the cover of 798 and the Red Goblin, fully bonded, appears on the cover of 799. Make of it what you will.

    • Ken M. says:

Any idea which one will be the first appearance?

      • JayClue says:

No idea. In this weeks issue, #795, Norman gains possession of the Carnage Symbiote and clearly makes his intentions known that he wants to bond with it. My money is on a one page cameo at the end of #796 and his 1st will be #797, as stated in the earlier article here on CHU. But honestly, who knows?

  21. Kevin verdine says:

Anyone seem to notice shipping w usps seems to have gone up? Or was it just me ?

    • JayClue says:

Shipping rates went up, across the board, for USPS effective Jan.22. They also have individual prices for eack parcel under 1 LB. 5-8 oz. packages used to be all same price. Now each incriment has its own value.
