What up CHUllectors!?! Shawn B. the One Year Later Investigator, back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
Light week on actual speccing.
Poyo’s Drek (Trust the chicken!) – Let’s see what the agent told us to stay away from last year.
Rat Queens Special: Orc Dave – Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4
Did speccing on this one cross anyone’s mind?
Winners
Spider-Gwen #24 – Anthony, Poyo & Alana Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $20
1st Gwenom. Alana had been bringing this one up for weeks ahead of time so she deserves a shout out.
Quick Flip Winners
Batman The Murder Machine #1
Original Value: $4 Quick Flip Value: $12 Current Value: $8
Most things DNM have done pretty well.
Misses
Marvel Legacy #1 1:50 Alex Ross Color Variant Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $75 Current Value: $15
Great cover. Alex Ross really is incredible.
Unspecced Winners
GI Joe A Real American Hero #244
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $10
Dawn Moreno (Female Snake Eyes) gets her costume. First appearance (at least for Dawn Moreno is actually #226) where she is trying out for the Cobra Lacrosse Team….the what!?!? They spent a lot of issues building this character up and it seems like she is around to stay. There are also talks of her having her own movie. You may have already heard about this here but to recap:
GI Joe A Real American Hero #226 – Dawn Moreno first appearance.
GI Joe A Real American Hero #227 – Dawn Moreno second appearance.
GI Joe A Real American Hero #228 – Dawn Moreno first cover appearance.
GI Joe A Real American Hero #229 – Dawn Moreno has Snake Eyes’ memories downloaded into her at the Cobra Super Brain Washing Center. First appearance of Female Snake Eyes out of costume?
GI Joe A Real American Hero #244 – First appearance of Female Snake Eyes in costume.
Suicide Squad #26
Original Value: $3 Current Value: $8
Again, nearly anything associated with DNM can be a money maker.

That Orc Dave special definitely isn’t a spec winner. But it’s a tremendous standalone story. After reading it, we placed a reorder for 40 additional copies and offered it with a money-back guarantee to every regular who buys titles with compelling relationships in them (Saga etc…). We sold all 40 copies and not a single customer brought it back.
It’s not the greatest standalone story I have ever read. That title still goes to FF 51 and “This Man, This Monster”. But it was exceptional.
Marvel Legacy……how long did that last.
love this weekly review, thanks.
and thanks for the heads up on the going rate of that marvel legacy ross cover! love alex ross’ work and collect his covers when i can but they’re often prohibitively expensive.
thanks to your review i just now picked one up for $10!
