Things I Like and Don't Like for the Week of October 31st, 2018

It’s that time again, where I tell you what’s really grinding my gears for the week of October 31st, 2018.
Some weeks it’s mostly likes, other weeks it’s dislikes.
So what’s grinding my gears this week?

Amulet Author and Artist
My biggest like this week was taking my daughter to meet the author and artist Kazu Kibuishi from Bestselling Series Amulet at the Texas Book Festival going on this weekend in Austin, TX.
We attended the panel as well before the signing session titled “How To Create Graphic Novels” which really dived into their thinking process on how they come up with the ideas to create their books.
Also on the panel was Raul the Third (Raul Gonzalez) who has done the illustrations for Lowriders series of books written by Cathy Camper. His artwork is really unique as we found out he does almost all of the books in ball point pen. Here’s an example of his work in Lowriders To The Center of the Earth. The moderator for the panel was Jo Whittemore who currently writes some Supergirl novels based on the CW show.

If you have kids who are into graphic novels or comics, I highly recommend this series for the younger crowd, probably best suited between the ages of 8 and 14. It’s a great graphic novel and I believe there will be a movie about it in the sometime future. Amazon has the complete set of books 1-8 for $66 currently.
Kazu runs https://www.boltcityproductions.com where he also does a Webcomic called Copper as well.
Halloween & Halloween Comic Fest
It’s FCBD for Halloween. I might not always dress up but I sure do love a good costume that people put a lot of effort into doing.
What I really enjoy is watching my little ones dress up and my daughter takes Halloween to new level as she doesn’t like the traditional outfits, she likes dressing up scary or creepy. The best part about that is I’m the one who usually does the makeup which is most rewarding.
But what is Halloween Comicfest? Well, it’s FCBD on the Saturday before Halloween each year. Comic shops give out free comics and usually partake in other activities that are Halloween themed, usually with lots of costumes and cosplay.
5th Wednesdays
Yeah sure, there’s a few books coming out and it’s Halloween but 5th Wednesdays are just blah to me.
Platinum Kryptonite Anyone? Say What?
Spoilers everyone. Stop reading if you don’t like spoilers.

So apparently in Batman Secret Files, Superman gives Batman a rock that he claims gives anyone who touches it the same abilities as himself, Superman. It’s called Platinum Kryptonite.
Please don’t ever touch it Bruce. I like Batman the way he is, a mere mortal man. His greatest power besides being smart is that he’s rich so he can create great tools, vehicles and weapons to assist his crime fighting. That’s what makes Batman, well, Batman. We don’t need another Superman.
I don’t like this new mythos to Superman nor do I like that fact they would make it so easy for someone to become Superman. I feel this rock should be treated like the ring in the Lord of the Rings. It should be destroyed. Get the Justice League Council together, it’s time to go on an adventure.

That’s all I got this week. Not a big week so with smaller weeks comes smaller likes and dislikes.

  1. Sounds like this platinum kryptonite is just an excuse to create more character mashups…this time with superman. New character debuts sell, and mashups are the quickest way to generate a bunch of lame new characters with little thought.

    1. Yeah. I want some creative people to just come up with brand new characters. I’m tired of the mashups now.

    2. krypton blew up, not disintegrated so there should be Trillions of pieces floating around. and with that logic, millions of inhabitants of krypton’s solar system should have superman’s powers, animals too. (did I just make things worse?)

      1. Sweet. I thought I read that platinum kryptonite is available from the phantom zone though. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

  2. Titans awesome, Walking Dead awesome best episodes in a while really excited for TWD after Rick Grimes is gone, Flash awesome, Arrow best episodes in years with prison Ollie, Legends awesome, Black Lightning better than the slow first season, Supergirl so so so far. I love the fall lineup for comic shows best time of the year.

    1. I’ve heard good things about TWD new season. Too bad it’s still a dead spec. I’ve still lost interest though and have zero desire to watch the show. Guess they should have gotten rid of Scott Gimple long ago..

    2. I tend to agree .. I stayed with it because it’s Grime’s last season .. I think Angela Kang, so far, is doing a great job in revitalizing the show ..

  3. My daughter and I love Kazu Kibuishi. We have a signed book by him, but haven’t had the chance to meet him in person yet. Another book I recommend is Beanworld by Larry Marder. Kids and adults come aways from it with different understandings.
