Things I Like and Don’t Like for the Week of February 20th, 2019

It’s that time again, where I tell you what’s really grinding my gears for the week of February 20th, 2019.

Some weeks it’s mostly likes, other weeks it’s dislikes.

So what’s grinding my gears this week?

Once Our Land HC Volume 2

Sorry Alana, I’m still onboard with Once Our Land and I was happy to get my new Volume 2 HC last week.

As you all know (or maybe you’re not aware), Once Our Land was recently optioned.

It had previously heated up due to just sheer popularity but after the option, we saw another round of heat for the first volume. This was originally a kickstarter campaign but Volume 1 was also picked up by Scout Comics with a 2 issue series.

Fast forward to Once Our Land Book Two now, which is also being picked up by Scout as a mini-series. Number one of Book 2 is scheduled to hit shelves at the end of the month on February 27th.

As I backed this kickstarter again (I did the first round which I opted to get the HC with a sketch inside), I went a bit further to also get not only a sketch on the inside but also a 7×10 sketch board included. The pic on the left is in the book while the one one the right is the sketch board.

I know a few people sold their first HC with sketches after the media option was announced but I’m glad I kept mine. I might be trying to rid my small hoard of comics currently but these are staying put.

I’m Pumped for Ascender

Descender was optioned and the series ended. But did it? Ascender is the next installment in the story that quickly became one of my favorite ongoing Image titles by Jeff Lemire and artist Dustin Nguyen.

As I knew Ascender was upon us, seeing the image for issue #2 really got me pumped for this series now (discovered in my news feed from Reddit). I must say, this is just one bad ass cover by Dustin Nguyen.

Ascender #1 hits stands April 24th and is available for pre-order now but I can’t wait for issue #2 and hope the covers continue on this same path of just being pure awesomeness.

Austin Books Sidekick Store Closing

For all of you in the Austin area or familiar with Austin Books and Comics, they’re closing down their Sidekick store, that’s behind their primary store.

I must say, this isn’t really a like or dislike but I’m surprised this store lasted as long as it did with the rising rent costs in Austin. The few times I actually ventured into it I always left with nothing and it was usually empty. I’d find myself alone along with the one person at the counter looking quite bored.

If you’re not aware, this was pretty much the store of all the back issues they likely got stuck with in buying up people’s collections that weren’t really worthy to make it to their front end store. I could only recall most if not all the issues and graphic novels would likely net nothing even if listed on eBay.

Even now with the huge sale going on with comics at 10 cents each and graphic novels at a dollar each, I’ll be surprised if most of this stock makes it’s way to Half Price or even the landfills for that matter. Even at such rock bottom prices, I have zero desire to waste any time making my way down there. I’d probably spend more time trying to find a parking space (ABC has the worst parking) than spend inside the store finding anything closely worthy of picking up.

So long Sidekick store, where unworthy comics went to die. I guess this turned out to be a like, the store was just a depressing pile of comics in long boxes.

That’s all I got this week. What’s grinding your gears this week? Except you Alana, we know you dislike Peter from Once Our Land..   😉

  1. The weird thing is, I always believed ABC owns their entire location. From what I’ve heard, it’s an open secret that the owner of Bankston Comics up in Fort Worth owns this entire retail space which made the excuse of “rising rent costs” somewhat unbelievable. I think that the Sidekick Store just wasn’t bringing in its share of the bills, so Fort Worth guy decided to rent the space out to someone. CBCS is new in town, and I can see them trying to rent out some space in the future.

    1. I had heard the same thing about ABC owning the actual buildings. Makes sense though, I’d rent it out myself if that’s the case as I know that Sidekick store was making no real money.

  2. Haha. Was just moping b/c I JUST learned the Sidekick was closing and did not make the last day. Reading this made me feel better. Still going to see if is open tomorrow. ;p

  3. I like the cover to the new Swamp Thing #1 Walmart 100 page giant (Greg Capullo cover).

Plus they dropped Teen Titans and Justice League, added Flash.

Batman and Superman #8 is also out this week. Waiting to see if any first appearances in any of these, although I’m getting the swamp thing #1 regardless.

    1. Just an FYI…they didn’t drop Teen Titans…they restarted it at #1 again. And they also added Wonder Woman #1.

  4. What I don’t like is how i can’t leave a comment on one iPad (my newer one) when I could before…yet my older iPad I have no problem. Not sure what I did on the newer in.

    1. Saw issue #1 at my LCS a month ago and put it back. Ugh….wonder if it’s still there. Not sure which #1 it was though. They all seem to be doing well.

  5. I should also note on the Once our land sketched hardcover I payed for and never got. I asked Peter Ricq for my sketch on the hard cover to be Fritz dressed as Deadpool. He had no clue who Deadpool is, I believe his exact words in our conversation was “what’s a Deadpool?” So not only did he hold my money for 4 + months before refunding me, he’s also in the comic biz and doesn’t actually read comic books. My 8 year old has a far superior knowledge of comics than this guy.

      1. Or perhaps he’s involved with his own work and his own life. Just because someone isn’t aware of mainstream comics makes him uninformed. I know plenty of people that are not aware of most comic heroes outside of the Batman and Superman type of caliber.

Maybe it was a polite way of saying no to the custom requests for sketches. Who knows.. but, hey Alana, no pun but you once publicly stated here that you have skipped out on paying eBay fees by opening new accounts when the fees got too big. You got your money back eventually from Peter but yet eBay is still waiting for their money owed.

What gives in that aspect? Not trying to open a can of worms but for someone to complain 2 years later about a delay in getting their $30 or $40 back after several months while at the same time owes money for services rendered is probably the best example of double standard ever.

    1. Or….. Or he’s just got good taste in comics and doesn’t read books peddled for 8 year olds 🙂

  6. Speaking of EBay, I don’t like how there hasn’t been a ebay bucks or 10-15% discount limited time offer on all purchases in a Long while….can’t remember seing one this calendar year. My watch list and carts are backing up!!!!

  7. I dislike that there are no wallmarts near me.Fractered ribs and figuring out what to do and not do is upsettingme. No 7-11 or decent captian marvel movie tie ins makes me upset. ruby’s spidergwen costumes are trash .I loved doom patrol and crazy jane was great in the show.need to buy all the d.p. #19s I canf ind .the regin of the supermen animated movie sucked big time .also hoping superman 100 pages #8 dealswith the beating lois got .love you all blind adam out

  8. Good luck finding copies of Hit Monkey #1 (his actual 1st appearance) in the wild. Been looking for extras and they’re not out there

  9. Last time I visited Austin, I found two, count em, two copies of Force Works at the Sidekick Store. Yes, I bought them. I am not a proud man.
