HBO Acquires Stranger Comics Niobe as a Part of Asunda Deal

News leaked out last week after an internal memo got out, but now it is officially announced HBO has made a deal with Stranger Comics to bring the company’s characters to TV.

Niobe, and the shared universe Asunda, first appears in Untamed #1. Niobi got her own series starting with Niobe #1 , the hardest of which is the Hoknes Variant which was limited to 100 copies printed, some of which were damaged, and 11 copies are in the hands of one collector.

Deadline.com had the official exclusive, of course though we have been mentioning these books since 2015 when Mel V. brought these to our attention. We released a variant, along with Hoknes Comics USA, for the second issue of Niobe back in 2016, you can check out that cover here.

From Deadline.com:

HBO has put in development Asunda, a series rooted in the namesake fantasy universe created by Sebastian A. Jones.

Co-written and executive produced by Jones, Asunda is set in the culturally rich but war-torn world of Asunda, where an orphan girl is born of two nations and raised in a small desert town. Hunted by all, she will search for her ancestors and the courage to bind them against an ancient enemy.

Mimi DiTrani also executive produces.

Asunda is inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth epics and Greek mythology and is similar in its settings to Westeros, the world in which the HBO hit series Game of Thrones is placed. It is published by Jones’ independent imprint, Stranger Comics, with Kickstarter campaigns helping along the way.

The epic history of Asunda has been chronicled in various “shared universe” titles published by Stranger Comics, among them Niobe, Dusu, Erathune and Essessa — all named for people or places in Asunda, which is a culturally diverse but war-battered world where magic and swords often determine the course of history.

  1. Comichron has issue 1 at only 3,443. Very pow print run….I see this book blowing up!!! But I guess it’ll all depend on how the show is.

    1. i hope you’re right. was disappointed when the heat quickly fizzled on niobe books back when the series started. but i’m glad i decided to bank on it anyway and hold onto the ones i bought.

  2. I passed on the Hoknes variant but did buy a few sets of untamed #1A & #1 variant. Got them off their website for I think $7 and $15 way back when. Should be a nice payday.

      1. Nice! I put some of my Niobe comics up for sale today at kinda high prices. Just want to see if demand catches up to my asking price as cheaper ones move. With the announcement of the HBO purchase it looks inevitable this property does something sooner than later. This might turn out to be something big with Game of Thrones finishing and Amazon ready to debut their LotR show, This acquisition by HBO might try to rival that. Talk about a slow burn for one!

  3. This all just clicked for me after I saw a video with the creator Sebastian in. I have been seeing him at cons for a couple years now trying to get his stories out there. I guess his hustle paid off.

  4. For anyone who didn’t get this when it was super cheap there is a seller on Ebay that has Untamed #1 cover A and Niobe #1 cover A both in high grade for $59 plus shipping. There are three sets available as of writing this. Don’t think they will last long with all the news starting to hit. Can’t see those two books in a set together getting much cheaper now! Not sure if I can put links up on CHU so I won’t but should be easy to find if interested.

    1. No luck yet. Just did a quick buzz through about 3 longboxes, need to take my time and check. I’m sure I just saw it a couple weeks ago.

      1. you sure did. i was just looking at that item actually and at first didn’t realize it was yours.
$$$ stacks on stacks on stacks on stacks $$$

i also saw that a cgc 9.8 sold just last month for $349. yikes. i’m sure that’s much more than the seller originally spent but talk about shitty timing. cheers to the buyer though on a very opportune purchase.
