Poyo’s Spec and Drek for April 17th, 2019

Indie Pick

My indie pick this week goes to Blessed Machine #2. Thanks to a generous reader of CHU who sent me issue #1 since none of my shops got this, well, if they did it wasn’t available by the time I got to the shop.

Great independent book and looking forward to issue #2. You can still find issue #1 from TFAW after it initially sold out but is now back in stock.

Small Publisher Picks

First up is Rise #2 from Scout Comics. I haven’t had a chance to read issue #1 yet so I’m going out on a limb with this pick but I love a good sci-fi read and this stories solicitation is right up my alley.

I’m hoping the first issue is a great read that leads me to wanting to read this one which is already selling out at online retailers.

The other pick goes to Little Bird #2 (of 5). I think we mentioned this might be a nice pickup even if you aren’t reading it or didn’t like it. The writer has dabbled with directing, producing and writing short films so this one could go that route more than likely.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

So yeah, it’s a pick but also a drek.

It’s the fabulous Rob Liefeld Major X #2 regular cover which is probably some of the worse cover art this year. This one for me beats out his work for DC.

Awful I tell you, just awful. Unless this book is selling due to the hype of new characters and major timeline disruptions, this is the book to avoid hanging on the wall I say. So here you go, I’m gonna make it 100% in size so you get to see it in all it’s glory to judge for yourself.

That’s all for this week. Tell me what you’re spec’ing on, picking up, reading, not liking (even if it’s my picks or me), etc.

  1. Wolverine’s claws are so long that when he retracts them they’ll be sticking out of his elbow. And maybe it’s just me but is major x doing his best “I am Cornholio” impersonation?

    1. Oh snap… Your right about the claws… I didnt even notice before…. I guess I was just focused on all the other really bad art on the cover.

  2. “Wolvi, Ive got a spot I cant reach. Mind using those Edward Scissorclaws to scratch it?”

AP, you make me blush with ” generous”.

  3. I just checked out the upcoming covers for Major X. Issue #4 has ten characters on it and you can almost see one foot. I swear Liefeld is sitting on a beach somewhere just submitting art and stories he wrote and drew in the 90’s. Aren’t we past the days where all events and characters have to have an X in their names? Why did the publishers even accept this? The interiors and covers are just plain dated. If you are going to give us bad art from the 90’s at least give us the $1.25 issue price with it.
