Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)

We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

The 242nd edition of the open forum!

Did you know we have the forum up and running, you can check it out at the official CHU Forum site. Also, if you are on Facebook, check out the new group, Comic Whisperer, by my friend Jeremy here.

As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?

    1. I imagine the spoiler will be posted tonight. I personally enjoyed the book.
I think it will serve to further heat up/increase demand of a book already on radars/in most of our collections. (But nothing new/not previously hot/talked about that will result in “digging”).

    2. It’s just Silver Surfer with some black goo on his hand that makes his blast stronger doesn’t explain the goo at all.

    1. Picked up a mid grade Fantastic Four 49 here. Got $75 in eBay bucks, and that’s after I bartered the seller down $50 from asking!

And i sold my set of 5 Ronin David Aja covers for $150…they’ve been sitting for a couple months but I’m sure the promotion helped make the sale. Needed that to help finance the FF49, so that was awesome!

        1. Been saving up for a while. I can partially thank the fine people here at CHU and their speculation skills for helping me flip a fair number of books to help finance it.

I’m officially in the Silver Age game now…gotta start planning my next grail…

  2. Immortal Hulk has jumped the spec shark and LCS’s around here with issue #2 for $50 (you know who you are) are gonna be stuck with ’em..
Been grabbing up Marvel bronze age horror 1st appearances, after looking for what seemed forever for Vampire Tales #2 1st Satana I found 2 copies at shops in a week, way underpriced.
Rescued a bunch of Oblivion Song #1 and Ghost Rider #28 (1st Lilith & Midnight Sons) from the dollar bins.
Picked up a decent FN copy of Silver Surfer #2 for $30.

  3. My pick ups tonight:
    Road of Bones 1
    Walking Dead 192
    Bone Parish #1
    Miles Morales Spider-Man #5
    Pearl #1 Variant
Oblivion Song #1 Pink Signature Variant

Listed all on eBay to pay for this week’s pick ups.

    1. mycomicshop has the price parked at $8 a copy. By the time they sell out, if they do, the undercutters will be setting in driving the price back down to cover again I expect with a ton of copies out there and another ton of Second Printings expected to kill off the rest of the demand by July 3rd. The book that’s still going up is Walking Dead 191. The stores that ordered Diamonds extras two weeks ago should be getting supplied with 192’s today. 9 out of 10 of mine came in damaged due to UPS bouncing the box all the way here it seems but the overall supply on the market should be going up today and will be huge by the time the Second’s get added July 3rd. I’m actually hoping they don’t have any to replace them with and just credit the damaged ones.

  4. Picking up:
    SIP Five Years 2
    Unnatural 10

    Back issues picked up:
Blood of Dracula 3 & 8 (early Sam Kieth covers)

Some of the books I sold at the local swap in Portland, OR last weekend:
    Showcase 79 (1st Dolphin)
Green Lantern vol 2 #85 reader copy (drug cover)
    Batman 608 (Lee cover)
Gen13 signed by Jim Lee & others
Deadworld 10A (1st Crow in back cover ad)
Amazing Spider-Man 258 (black suit cover)
a short box of $1 books

    Notes about the swap:
The most popular books at this swap were once again inexpensive golden age/pulp books and $1 books. Expensive slabbed books don’t do well at this show, since this is more a show for cheap reading copies. I was asked most frequently for Punisher and GI Joe books. No one was interested in any of the Dark Crystal books I had out. Probably still too early.

      1. Tony, I recently picked up a Deadworld 1 too. You probably know, but the Deadworld 10 has two covers, a tame and an untame version. I haven’t really seen a difference in price and don’t know the ratio. The one I sold recently was the tame cover. I’ve got one of each for the pc, but tend to sell the tame and hold the untame unless it is a lower grade and then I sell.

        1. Oh, and that Batman 608 I sold, I picked up in a 2/$1 box a couple of years ago. Had a color breaking crease from a thumb on the front cover.

        2. I have one of each cover for the entire series. Picked these up years ago. Recently at a thrift store found the tame cover and flipped that copy. Also found copies of Rust there.

          1. Do you know if it was a 1:1 ratio? Do you have a copy of Realm 4 by Arrow Comics? It’s listed as the 1st appearance of Deadworld. No one was interested in my copies of Rust at the swap.

              1. I picked up a Realm 4 today at my lcs. I also picked up a Goblin Studios 1 signed by a bunch of people and numbered 94 of 500. No spec in the Goblin Studios but I enjoy 90’s indie books.

      1. I bought it for $40 and sold it for $80. It was a mid-grade copy. I’d like a higher grade for my pc. I love the lime green cover.

  5. I watched Captain Marvel last night for the first time. I enjoyed it. Not bad. Not great. Brie Larson looks funny when she runs.

  6. My favorite day of the week!

    Pick ups today:
Spiderman Life Story #4 (1:25 variant for $7)
Vader Visions #5 (1:25 variant for $15-love the cover art!)
Silver Surfer #1 (Parel variant for $11)

    Spec pick ups this week:
Oblivion Song #1 (4 pink signature variants all at cover price)-posted them this morning and all are gone between $24-$26 each)-God I love option news for the quick ability to move a pile of books that have been sitting around for months.

Saw a lot of the Carnage secret variants around stores today, so I decided to save my money for a better opportunity. Out of 4 stores I stopped at, everyone had the Symbiote secret variant and 3 had the Venom variants.

    Good hunting everyone!

  7. I actually got some new pickups today for the first time in a while. I got both of the bloody variants and I got Miles Morales #5 and #6, the #6 could use a little pressing.

  8. not getting much this week.interviewed Jason david frank over the phone today.tony should have it up sometime int he near futre.i did buy two talking venom action figures from the 1990s talking line.i also pre ordered a copy of carebears #1 the 1 in 10 variant.it is already going for $20. I also bought a copy of marvel age s#114&119 as well as ronin ragdolls the kick starter edition. o.k. off to watch swamp thing &do reserch for lets call it a fan film love you guys blind adam out

  9. Sometimes, bargains can be found in isolated cities with one comic store filled with large collection untouched by speculators. Recently purchased the following mint comics at cover price.

Batgirl 40 purple rain variant. Marvel super heroes V2/8 (1st squirrel girl). Detective 850, 854 (gothem city sirens). Deadpool secret war 2 (1st Gwenpool). Secret avengers 23 (venom). Superman batman annual 4 (batman beyond). 52 (batwoman). Doctor fate 1. x23 1 (2005). Spawn 179, 182, 185 (low print). Iron man (thor hammer). Catwoman (Hughes covers).

  10. Several of the “secret” variants were available when I picked up my pull today. In fact, the tables were still fairly full, so nothing seemed to be a hot seller this week. The pull:
