July 2019 – In Review Part I

With these reviews, we find out how right or how wrong we were, what we missed and what you can likely still find at cover price, likely at the local comic shop or at online retailers.

July 2019 was a big month, with SDCC and a lot of book hitting shop shelves, lets start with the top 10 books that sold the biggest unit volumes and a quick summary for them.

  1. House of X #1 – 185,630
  2. Powers of X #1 – 167,840
  3. Amazing Spider-Man #25 – 113,272
  4. Walking Dead #193 – 111,121
  5. Batman Last Knight On Earth #2 – 105,012
  6. Batman Curse of the White Knight #1 – 91,205
  7. Batman Who Laughs #7 – 88,012
  8. Black Cat #2 – 83,298
  9. Immortal Hulk #20 – 83,059
  10. Batman #74 – 78,544

The new Hickman X books are living up to the hype. Selling out despite huge print runs. House of X #1 is a $10 book on a good day with additional printings on the way.

Powers of X #1 you can still find at your local retailers.

Amazing Spider-Man #25 was a celebration of 12 months of the new volume. Nothing happened. It was just a overpriced issue with a few extra pages and some extra variants.

Walking Dead #193 saw the end of a long run by Kirkman out of Image Comics. It was a surprise ending causing this slowly dying comic based on print runs to jump back into the top ten for one last time.

Batman Last Knight on Earth is the new Snyder/Capullo under the Black Label imprint from DC. Everyone loved the Snyder and Capullo run on Batman so retailers are well prepared for this series. The other bonus for me is the book was normal size as I’m not a huge fan of the magazine size moderns.

Curse of the White Knight is the new Sean Murphy Batman book. The last series was a great read so most are anticipating another great series.

Batman Who Laughs #7 was the end of the mini-series that kicked off what we’re going to see in the upcoming Batman Superman #1.

Black Cat #2 was the winner last month due to a huge surge in Wal-Mart orders for the issue. This is surprising for me, I heard its a decent read but I still can’t see that many people jumping onboard a character that’s best classified as a supporting character in the Spider-Man world.

Immortal Hulk #20 is seeing the surge in print runs due to it’s sheer popularity now. Just about all the back issues before issue #16 sell for a premium.

Batman #74 made the list because well, it’s Batman. It’s usually a consistent top ten book despite it’s recent slump in sales. We might see a bump in print runs now with the City of Bane story line and after we saw the death of Alfred in issue #77. King’s run ends in issue #85. Anyone know if this is getting rebooted or will the new writer or team pick up with issue #86? Something to keep an eye on.

July 3rd Books

Green Lantern #9 Dekal Variant was one of those books that sold out, slightly heated up but is now a cover price book.

Still a pretty cool variant if you can find it and if you’re a Dekal fan.

Lady Death Sworn #1 Ms Death Variant (total print run was a measly 1,038 total) was a homage cover to Ms Marvel #1. Sold out, small print run and is a solid $12 to $15 book on a good day. If you can find them for cover, keep it for the personal collection or flip to buy more comics.

No One Left To Fight #1 was a great pickup and flip intially. Reaching a peak around the $20 mark and then becoming a solid $10 to $15 book, it’s now settled down a bit.

Most recent sales have been a few bucks over cover while a few are around the cover price range.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #95 brought us the new gal Turtle. With a print run of just 15,381 these were hard to find.

Quickly heating up and causing her first appearances back in issue #51 to heat up along with her first cover appearance on issue #59 with it.

It’s doubtful you can still find these out in the wild as most sought this book out and now every issue until #100 is on the radar.

July 10th Books

Reaver #1 sold out initially and became a solid $10 on average sale on the secondary market. You can probably still find these locally or online (Midtown still has them limited 1 per customer). There’s still a second print out there as well that hit shops two weeks ago.

Go Go Power Rangers #21 introduced the new purple ranger but sadly, the most recent sales put this one at or even below cover price.

July 10th was a weak new comic book week. Most if not all of the books you can still find at your local shops or online. Some of the ones that did sell out are selling for cover or less on the secondary market.

That concludes part I of July 2019 in review. Stick around for Part II in the coming days that will cover the remaining 3 Wednesdays from July.

  1. I think the Batman Who Laughs series could heat up if the Batman/Superman series is a hit. The variants were all awesome. I picked up multiples of issue 3 variant. That cover was just amazing

  2. Loved the White Knight series. Looking forward to see Curse unfold. I think the creative team is knocking it out of the park. Any possibility Curse heats up?

  3. “King’s run ends in issue #85. Anyone know if this is getting rebooted or will the new writer or team pick up with issue #86?“

If they do I hope they reboot back to legacy numbering…like Tec and Action.

  4. You got the list wrong.

You have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the list to get the numbers that show the placement once you add the A and B covers with different priced covers together. DCeased was #3. You then take the DC combined covers list and work them in where they would have normally appeared compared to the combined same price covers for other issues.

  6. It affects other titles also like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers coming in at #187 and #221 had almost as many copies as the A cover on the market for the Foil. The only real question I have for the list is what caused the 50% increase in orders for TMNT 95 15,381 compared to 94 10,308? At first I thought maybe it was the Second Printing but that doesn’t invoice until the same invoice absolute carnage is on so I would think those numbers weren’t included in the total. I’ll have to wait until next month to see if the second printing shows up on that list to be sure.
